Boasting a line-up which could rival Glastonbury, Nigel Humphries’ new Mixtape collection takes us back to an era of homemade cassettes. Featuring a compilation of our favourite musical heroes, the series brings together a selection of iconic singers and bands from a range of eras and genres. Like any good mixtape, it’s eclectic but it’s one you’ll want to repeat over and over again. Following the success of his superhero series, Nigel has untied his cape and dived paintbrush-first into the history of rock and pop icons. By researching details like outfits and stage props, Nigel has recreated iconic moments in time whilst capturing their spirit and personas.

Bringing the world’s most famous musicians to life from his purpose-built studio in the back garden, Nigel has solidified his love for music. He shares this space with a drum kit, even resting his easel on his snare drum. For Nigel, music brings a sense of nostalgia and he wanted to tap into this by depicting icons that all ages can instantly recognise and relate to. He says: “I listened to a lot of the music whilst painting, and yes, that includes the Spice Girls! I’ve enjoyed going down a different route and exploring new ideas. It’s been a challenge to bring the characters out, as they are both real people and well-known personas. All of my work is based on fun, I want people to feel happy when they look at it.”

Nigel’s quirky studio features a cabinet full of Funko Pop figures (all neatly labelled by character!) and a Marvel comic strip lampshade. A self-taught artist, his bookshelves are lined with books about the Old Masters, whose techniques he has spent hours studying in order to develop his own style. Passionate about revolutionising the way we view still-life painting, Nigel admires artists like Norman Rockwell and Arthur Rackham. For each piece, Nigel sets up a miniature theatre stage with crumpled paper for the backdrop and the star of the show lit up in the centre. The initial layout is outlined on

the canvas in willow charcoal before oil paint is applied onto a fine-grain linen canvas panel, allowing him to capture small details.
