IF I COULD INTERVIEW ANYONE IN THE WORLD

IT WOULD BE THE QUEEN OF TALK SHOW HOSTS

If you had a chance to interview or just have a conversation with anyone in the world — who would it be? Maybe some of you have thought about this question before. Oct. 23 is TV Talk Show Host Day, and since talk show hosts make it their career to talk to interesting people every day, I thought this month would be a good time to answer that question myself. If I had the chance to chat with anyone in the world, I would probably talk to the queen of talk show hosts herself, Oprah Winfrey. I’ve been a fan of Oprah’s shows, books, and podcasts since her show first started in the 1980s. I was in high school at the time, and Oprah’s show was more of a tabloid talk show. It was a lot of celebrity gossip about issues that weren’t incredibly important in the grand scheme of things. However, as anyone who has followed Oprah’s

career would know, she began discussing more important issues on her shows and bringing on increasingly influential and important guests to have profound conversations about the state of the world. She began encouraging her audience to be their best selves and to be better people, and the content of her show reflected that encouragement. Like I said before, I was in high school when “The Oprah Winfrey Show” first came on the air. Like any high school student, I had a lot of growing and maturing to do, and it felt like I was growing right alongside Oprah as a talk show host. For that reason, and for so many others, she’s had a tremendous impact on my life. If I had a chance to interview her, I would want to know what motivated her to get where she is today. She’s had such a unique career trajectory, which can only mean she’s had some pretty unique and interesting motivations throughout her life. I would also want to know if she realized she was becoming successful in real time. It must be an incredibly surreal experience to watch yourself become more and more successful to the point where you’re a multimillionaire and a household name. Very few people can speak to what that’s like, and for that reason, I would love to ask Oprah about it.

“It must be an incredibly surreal experience to watch yourself become more and more successful to the point where you’re a multimillionaire and a household name.”

To this day, I still keep up with a lot of Oprah’s projects, like Super Soul Sunday, and her “SuperSoul” podcast. I also deeply admire her philanthropic work building schools for girls in South Africa, the work she’s done through Oprah’s Angel Network, and so much more. As someone who has tried to do as much as I can through our office to help schools in Clayton County and our community, I can definitely appreciate all that Oprah’s philanthropic efforts have accomplished. Even if I’m never able to talk to Oprah in person, I’m glad for all the work she’s done for countless people throughout her career. To call her an inspiration would be an understatement, and I have no doubt that just having one conversation would have a huge impact.

The immediate aftermath of an auto accident can be absolute chaos. While it’s completely understandable to be shaken up in that situation, the last thing you want for yourself in that situation is to be unable to act. If you’re able to take all the correct necessary steps after a car accident, you’ll save yourself from a lot of headaches down the road. Here are a few key steps to follow. Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. Do this before you do anything else. If any injuries are immediately apparent, whether they’re serious or relatively minor, call 911. Even if you think you’ll be fine without going to the hospital, calling 911 will ensure that you have an official report to give to your insurance company. Get your vehicle somewhere safe. If you’re able to move your vehicle, pull completely off the road while you wait for help. You don’t want to impede traffic or cause further accidents by staying in the middle of the road. You can also use road flares to demarcate the boundaries of the accident if you have them. Exchange information with the other drivers. Get the other drivers’ contact information and insurance information, but beyond that, don’t exchange too many words. You don’t want to discuss the accident with them and accidentally say something that incriminates you. Don’t admit fault and don’t openly blame the other driver. Gather evidence. This is the step that’s easiest to forget. Use your smartphone to document everything at the accident site, including info on the other vehicles, their positions following the crash, eyewitness testimonies, and the exact location of the crash. Having this information can make a case a lot easier down the road. 5 STEPS YOU NEED TO TAKE IMMEDIATELY AFTER AN AUTO ACCIDENT

As the weather cools and the days get shorter, we can’t rely as much on the sun for our daily dose of vitamin D. The primary function of vitamin D is regulating the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are necessary for strengthening our bones and teeth, which becomes increasingly important as we age and our bones naturally become more brittle. While these benefits of vitamin D are well documented, did you know that getting your daily dose of vitamin D can also contribute to healthier muscles? A few years ago, researchers published a study that seemed to show that vitamin D could potentially help people gain muscle mass. While the research team said their results weren’t conclusive, their findings were certainly interesting. Vitamin D enters the body in an inactive form. It doesn’t become active until it comes in contact with the right enzymes in either the liver or the kidneys. To learn more about what factors affect this vitamin’s rate of absorption and activation in the body, researchers observed the levels of inactive vitamin D in 116 women ages 20–74. What they found was that women with higher muscle mass had lower levels of inactive vitamin D, while women with lower muscle mass had higher levels of inactive vitamin D. The conclusion researchers drew was that active vitamin D might help optimize muscle strength. While that conclusion is not ironclad, vitamin D’s other well-known benefits still make it worth getting your daily dose. It can aid weight loss, enhance mood, support cardiovascular health, boost the immune system, and strengthen bones, among many other benefits. So, its potential muscle-boosting properties are just another reason to get more vitamin D. To get more of this important vitamin in your diet, try adding salmon, mushrooms, and even canned tuna to your menu. Also, as winter approaches, it might be time to start taking a vitamin D supplement. Whether you’re 20 or 74 years old, it’s never too late to find ways to strengthen your muscles. AND HOW TO PROVE FAULT THE NECESSARY PARTS OF A SLIP-AND-FALL CASE

We’ve all probably slipped and fallen at some point in our lives. At best, slips and falls leave us a little flustered and embarrassed. At worst, they might leave us injured, resulting in a hospital stay, a fight with an insurance provider, and a lawsuit. While that might sound overblown, an entire area of personal injury law is dedicated to slips and falls and how to navigate the legal waters that surround them. The Necessary Components In order to have the grounds to pursue a slip-and-fall case, you need to prove there was a dangerous condition you couldn’t have foreseen under normal circumstances (say, a slippery tile floor with no wet floor sign) and a party responsible for causing that dangerous condition (i.e., a store owner who neglected to indicate that the floors were wet). If you can prove that you have these two components, you could have grounds for a slip-and-fall case. While that might seem easy enough, it’s only the beginning. How to Prove Fault Each slip-and-fall case is unique, so there isn’t a precise way to determine when someone is legally responsible for your injuries. However, you must prove 1) that the property owner created the

dangerous condition, 2) that the owner knew it existed

and didn’t do anything to fix it, or 3) that the dangerous condition had existed for so

long that the owner should have fixed it

before someone got hurt. Any of these circumstances would mean that the property owner

both knew about and should have prevented the dangerous condition, which means you should have grounds to file a personal injury claim against them. If you believe that someone is at fault for an injury you received because of a slip-and-fall, and you want help pursuing fair compensation for your injuries, call Obiorah Fields today for a free consultation at (404) 994-6218.

Weird and Wacky Halloween Laws

SPOOKY CITY REGULATIONS

HALLOWEEN LAWS ACROSS THE U.S.

Halloween can be a mischievous holiday. The most innocent of us reserve it for backyard parties and trick-or-treating, but some like to get a little rowdier than others. That’s exactly why various city councils across the U.S. have passed some seemingly unusual laws to regulate spooky festivities. Rehoboth Beach, Delaware: No Sunday Trick-or-Treating If Halloween falls on a Sunday, children in Rehoboth Beach are required to trick-or-treat the night before. The explanation in the city code is simple, but ambiguous: to prevent children and their guardians from going door to door on Sunday evenings. Rehoboth Beach law also forbids children from roaming the streets on Halloween “with the intent to cause trouble,” but what exactly that means is ambiguous as well. Hollywood, California: No Silly String The Los Angeles City Council has banned Silly String and all other brands of aerosol string from use on Halloween in the Hollywood area. From midnight on Oct. 31 until noon on Nov. 1, no one is allowed to spray, sell, or distribute Silly String in public locations. Use of Silly String got so popular in the city on Halloween that the

mess left behind became a strain on sanitation workers, and the city sympathized with them.

Belleville, Illinois: No 8th Graders Trick-or-treating is most often viewed as an activity reserved for younger generations, but how do you determine what age is “too old” for this type of generally good-natured fun? Well, the city of Belleville settled the ambiguity by passing a law restricting teenagers who are past the eighth grade — generally older than 13 — from going door to door on Halloween. Walnut, California: No Masks Without Permits In a simpler time, there was no paperwork required to celebrate Halloween to the fullest. But in the city of Walnut, no one can wear a mask or other disguise on public streets without a permit from the sheriff. The law doesn’t specify any exceptions, so residents are left to assume that everyone from age 5 to 100 must abide. Whatever your Halloween celebrations might look like this year, it’s important to have fun, but remember to abide by any rules or laws your city might have in place in an effort to keep its citizens safe.
