As we re-engage with our Journey to Excellence initiatives, I would like to thank the managers and staff of the departments that I have rounded with recently. I am gaining insightful information about you and how your department functions in collaboration with other areas of the hospital. I am dedicated to this initiative and look forward to continuous rounding. PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT JUNE 2021 Dr. David Clause Orthopaedic Surgeon

Where are you originally from? I am originally from Carencro, Louisiana. Why did you choose OGHS? When I made the decision to move home from Biloxi, MS, I heard about a position opening up at Opelousas Orthopaedic Clinic. After meeting with the staff there, I knew it was where I wanted to be. What is your favorite thing about working at OGHS? I appreciate the small town atmosphere at OGHS. Everyone is friendly and personable. These qualities make working here enjoyable. What do you enjoy most about being a physician? I feel like being a physician is a unique and privileged position. It is an honor to be able provide patients with the services needed to improve their quality of life. Knowing I have helped someone in that way is truly a rewarding experience. What would you like everyone to know about you? Upon graduation from high school, my dream was to move west to work on a ranch. I really wanted to be a cowboy. What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy anything outdoors. Hunting, fishing, and golfing are some of my downtime favorites. I also enjoy cooking and spending quality time with Hope and her children.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT JUNE 2021 Tricia Bergeron What Tricia likes about working at OGHS: Tricia enjoys working at OGHS because of her work family. She loves her co-workers, who have become life-long friends to her. What Tricia would like everyone to know about her? Tricia is happily married and has three daughters. When she is not at work, she enjoys camping with family and watching her girls participate in rodeos. She is most THANKFUL for her supportive family and for the knowledge and ability to come to work every day to a job that she loves.

Tricia Bergeron is being ACKNOWLEDGED as the spotlight employee for June 2021. We would like to INTRODUCE Tricia, who has been a member of our OGHS family for the DURATION of 12 years. She is a Senior Medical Tech/Section Supervisor in the laboratory. Tricia’s EXPLANATION of her various duties: Tricia keeps track of the inventory in the blood bank. She is responsible for making sure there is a sufficient supply at all times, especially when blood is needed for surgeries or trauma cases. Tricia also performs quality control on laboratory equipment to make sure that all equipment is functioning properly.

Congratulations to Vickie Couvillion, RN, Women Services Director, on her retirement. Vickie served at OGHS for the past 42 years. She will be greatly missed. We would like to congratulate Vickie and send best wishes to her.

Congratulations to Casey Taylor, External Audit Coordinator in Accounting. She recently earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Administration from Southern New Hampshire University. Casey is responsible for all governmental audits for the hospital and appeals all denied insurance claims. She has worked at OGHS for the past 3 years.

NATIONAL LABORATORY WEEK

The Laboratory Depar tment recent ly celebrated National Laboratory Week with a cake for the department. Thank you for all that you do for OGHS!

RESPIRATORY THERAPIST OF THE YEAR!

Congratulations to Anna Gillen, Respiratory Therapist. She has been awarded the 2020 Respiratory Therapist of the Year by the Louisiana Society for Respiratory Care Chapter 5. She was nominated by her peers and recently received the award. Anna has worked as a Respiratory Therapist at OGHS for the past 28 years.

Congratulations to Clarissa Jackson, RN! Clarissa works on 4N and has been employed by OGHS for the past 9 years. She was recently honored by the Louisiana State Nurses Association District IV at the 21st Annual Acadiana Celebrates Nursing Awards reception. Clarissa was one of 25 honorees being recognized. KENNETH COCHRAN, PRESIDENT & CEO OF OPELOUSAS GENERAL HEALTH SYSTEM, IS AMONG NEWLY ELECTED LA STATE NURSES ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS

On Thursday, April 22, 2021, the Louisiana State Nurses Association conducted its first Virtual Membership Assembly. Over 130 nurses and nursing students from across Louisiana participated; 107 served as delegates from 9 district nursing associations. Louisiana nurses identified and discussed focus areas that impact nursing and patient care. Nurses leveraged a virtual platform to have dialogues on issues such as workplace violence, scope of practice, peri-operative safety, and access to care. As the largest number of healthcare providers in Louisiana, nurses are committed to making a difference in their profession, in the health of Louisiana’s citizens and addressing the disparities highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Newly elected to the Board of Directors: Kenneth Cochran, DSc, RN, MBA, FACHE was elected as Director of Professional Development and Leadership. Dr. Cochran is a senior level healthcare executive with more than 20 years of healthcare experience including diversified experience in clinical department management. He has extensive professional involvement in local, state and national level organizations and has been recognized for exceptional skills in financial and operations management , regulatory compliance, clinical outcomes, and physician recruitment. He has been branded as an “Up and Comer” by many colleagues. Originally from the state of Alabama, Dr. Cochran is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and Board Certified in Healthcare Management. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Troy State University in Troy, Alabama and received a Master of Business Administration degree from California State University in Bakersfield, California. Dr. Cochran received a Doctor of Science in Health Systems Leadership from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He also served as an orthopedic specialist and combat flight medic in the United States Army Reserves for 8 years. Dr. Cochran is currently serving as President & Chief Executive Officer of Opelousas General Health System. CIS AT OPELOUSAS GENERAL HEALTH SYSTEM IS ONE OF THE FIRST IN THE STATE TO USE ABRE MEDTRONIC VENOUS STENT

Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) is one of the first in Louisiana to use theAbre™ Venous Self-Expanding Stent System by Medtronic to treat patients with deep venous obstruction in the legs. The first procedure was performed by on April 27 by Dr. Kalyan Veerina, interventional cardiologist at CIS, at Opelousas General Health. Deep venous obstruction occurs when the veins in the deep venous system become obstructed, blocked or compressed causing restricted blood flow to the heart. This stent is intended for permanent implant and utilizes an open-cell design and offers a balance of strength, flexibility and fatigue resistance. “We are excited to be one of the first to offer this exciting new therapy to help patients restore their movement, blood flow, and quality of life,” said Dr. Veerina. “We can now treat patients with even the most challenging deep venous lesions.” Globally, it is estimated that approximately 24 million

people are affected by deep venous obstruction, yet less than one percent of the population is treated. Symptoms of this disease can include leg swelling, skin ulcers, leg ulcers and pain. If left untreated, severe complications can occur, such as blood clots that migrate to the lungs (pulmonary embolism), a clot in the leg called a deep vein thrombosis (DVT), or the formation of fibrotic tissue or scarring caused by a chronic DVT (post thrombotic syndrome). Diversity Equity Inclusion

June is PRIDE Month. This month celebrates the past, present and future of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) individuals. To acknowledge the many acts of heroism and sheroism throughout the LGBTQ community, here are some interesting and useful facts: June was chosen as PRIDE month because of the Stonewall Riots which took place on June 28, 1969. The Stonewall Inn was a gay club in Greenwich Village in NYCwhich was often raided by policemen. In addition to frequent raids, those who were in the bar were often harassed and assaulted because of their sexuality. On that day in 1969, members of the LGBTQ community took a stand and fought back for six days. That was the start of the gay and transgender rights movement and how the country would take notice of the rights and passions of our LGBTQ community. Why the rainbow? The rainbow—with its beautiful, vibrant colors—symbolizes diversity in its truest sense. It was commissioned in 1978 by icon and politician, Harvey Milk. He asked Gilbert Baker, a veteran of the Vietnam War and drag performer, to think about how to celebrate and honor the LGBTQ community and Baker created the iconic rainbow flag. Baker’s desire was to associate LGBTQ individuals with something other than the pink triangle, which was used by the Nazis during the Holocaust to identify homosexuals within the concentration camps. Baker created a flag that originally had 8 colors and each color represented something within the intersection of life and the human spirit. Today, the colors are seen as the symbol of the LGBTQ community and around the globe. These colors are a celebration toward identity and inclusiveness within the LGBTQ community and to all of humanity. There are many celebrations commemorating PRIDE Month. There are rallies, marches, workshops, educational seminars and parades with beautiful shapes, sizes, and colors. This month we celebrate our family, friends and community members who identify themselves within the colors of the rainbow. Here’s to you—here’s to he, him, she, her, they, their and them! The only thing they have to look forward to is hope. And you have to give them hope. Hope for a better world, hope for a better tomorrow, hope for a better place to come to if the pressures at home are too great. Hope that all will be all right. -Harvey Milk
