The month of March is national Women’s History Month. In this month’s newsletter, we celebrate the contributions that women have made in history in the medical field. There are hundreds of women that we are not able to feature, but we offer the following women that have contributed to many advancements for men, women, and children. Diversity Equity Inclusion

In October 1916, the nurse and women’s rights activist, , opened the first American birth control clinic in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Since state “Comstock Laws (laws protecting public morality)” banned contraceptives and the dissemination of information about them, Sanger’s clinic was determined to be illegal. On October 26, the city vice squad raided the clinic, arrested its staff, and seized the stock of contraception. Sanger tried to reopen the clinic twice more, but police forced her landlord to evict her, and it was soon closed for good. In 1921, Sanger formed the American Birth Control League, the organization that eventually became Planned Parenthood. Margaret Sanger

also known as Bessie Blount Griffin, was an American nurse, physical therapist, inventor, and handwriting expert. In the 1940s, she worked with World War II veterans in New York City’s Bronx Hospital (now part of Bronx Care Health System), where she taught veterans with amputations to read and write with their teeth and feet. Blount furthered this invention by creating the tube that delivered food to a person’s mouth whenever he or she bit down on it. She patented part of the design in 1948, then gifted the rights to the invention over to the French government in 1951 since the U.S. government hadn’t shown much interest in the device. Her invention paved the way for modern feeding tubes, which can be inserted into a person’s nose or stomach if the user can’t ingest food orally. After patenting the feeding tube, Blount continued to invent and went on to become a forensic handwriting analyst. Bessie Virginia Blount,

While working in Palo Alto in 1991, AsianAmerican scientist was part of the team that patented the first method of isolating blood-forming stem cells in 1991. Tsukamoto holds a total of 12 U.S. patents for her stem cell research, which has helped with the development of cancer treatments. Ann Tsukamoto

Slow and Steady Wins the Waist Eating more slowly and mindfully is emerging as a possible tool to help control weight and support good health. If you are looking to lose weight or simply improve or protect your cardiometabolic health, emerging nutrition research suggests a simple new tool that may help: slow down! Fast eating has been associated with excess weight gain and might also have a negative effect on metabolism, raising risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Let’s take a closer look. • Weight: In studies conducted there seems to be a close connection in eating speed and BMI. Fast eating may lead to weight gain because it delays feelings of fullness and satisfaction, increasing risk of overeating. It takes time for the signal that we’re full to reach our brain. When we eat quickly, we may shovel in more than we need before realizing we’ve had enough. Over time, this leads to higher intake of calories and therefore weight gain. • Hunger: Eating quickly may actually impact hunger and satiety hormones. In one trial of 21 young, healthy individuals with a normal BMI were randomly assigned to consume a 600-calorie meal in either six minutes or 24 minutes. While participants reported enjoying the six-minute meal more, eating slowly led to a greater feeling of fullness and blood tests found lower levels of the “hunger hormone”. Also, important to note is that the slow eater consumed 25% less calories when offered a snack three hours after the meal. • Slowing down: A key strategy for eating more slowly is to eat mindfully. This means sitting down in a designated area, setting aside any distractions, and focusing on the experience of eating. Truly enjoy your food and pay attention to your body’s hunger/fullness signals. Common tips for mindful eating include coming to the table hungry (but not ravenous); chewing your food thoroughly; and letting go of the idea that you must clean your plate. Randomized controlled trials have found eating strategies resulted in significant weight loss compared with no intervention.

Whatever strategies work for you, finding ways to slow down may help you eat less, make better choices, and even improve your health.
