MOTION Monthly TIME TO SAY GOODBYE FABRICE STEPS INTO A NEW ROLE TO HELP MORE PATIENTS For more than 23 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping people get back to their lives again. I’ve guided grandparents through exercises that enable them to play with their grandchildren again, helped athletes through their recovery to become stronger players, and provided pain management techniques to individuals who thought they had no hope of a pain-free lifestyle. It’s been an honor to live out this dream in the way that I have, and that’s what makes the next part so bittersweet. I’m excited to announce that I have taken on a new role — one that will allow me to take my passion for helping others heal and combine it with the organizational leadership skills I’ve acquired while operating OPTM of Saratoga. You may remember that OPTM of Saratoga recently merged with Golden Bear Rehabilitation and Wellness. We’re now part of a large network of physical therapy clinics across California, bringing together our customized, personal rehabilitation services with the resources of a large clinical setting. Since we merged with Golden Bear, we have seen the tremendous ways in which this partnership has benefited our team and our patients. We have seen more opportunities come our way, and for me, that has come in the form of a new role within OPTM of Saratoga and Golden Bear. I am now the regional director of operations for the South Bay Area Region for Golden Bear. This includes overseeing the operations of 10 clinics across the south Bay Area, from Newark all the way down to Salinas. This role includes fewer opportunities for patient care — which is that “bitter” component of this bittersweet news — but I will still have opportunities to help people. I’m growing into a greater leadership role, which will allow me to empower clinical directors and their teams to provide the best patient care possible. In a tangential way, I still get to have an impact on patients. I will just get to use my wisdom and expertise to help the next generation of physical therapists and directors do the same. While the scope of my work is evolving into a more leadership- focused role, my commitment to OPTM of Saratoga and our community isn’t changing. I’m continuing my service by

volunteering on various community boards, and I’m confident that the culture my leadership team and I have built at OPTM of Saratoga will continue. In fact, I’m proud to say one of those members of that leadership team will step into my role at the clinic. Dr. Ben Turner is now the clinical director of OPTM of Saratoga. Ben has helped run OPTM of Saratoga for a few years now, and I have no doubt that his passion and experience will be of great benefit to our clinical team and patients. (You can learn more about Ben on Page 2.) With that, it’s time I say farewell to my newsletter writing duties. Ben will be stepping into this role next month, and while I can’t wait to see how I can continue to help people find healing and relief through my new role, I’m going to miss this job. I’m going to miss the daily interactions and connecting with readers through our newsletter. It’s been fun. I have no doubt that this is the right step and that Ben and the OPTM of Saratoga team will continue the legacy we have all built together. Thank you for your support, and it’s been an honor to serve you.

They Know What They’re Doing!

THE PASSION THAT DRIVES DR. BEN TURNER Dedicated to Patients

SUCCESS STORIES

“I recently went through PT for my shoulder after injuring it playing tennis and cricket. Nicole at OPTM was amazing! She was able to zero in on my problem right away, recommended the right set of exercises, and always followed up diligently. I am now almost fully recovered and back to playing tennis again. I would strongly recommend Nicole, as she is one of the best I have seen, and believe me, I have seen a few PTs for my shoulder in the past.”

As Dr. Fabrice Rockich steps into a new role, we would like to introduce the physical therapist who will be writing cover articles for the OPTM of Saratoga newsletter. If you haven’t already, meet Dr. Ben Turner! When Dr. Ben Turner was considering a career, sports journalism felt like the right fit. But as Ben began working

“I came in with knee pain. They listened to my issues, tested different motions to identify specifically where my pain was, and developed a strategy to match. They were professional and progressed me along as I built back my strength to stabilize my knees. Occasionally, I would come in with a setback from my activities during the week, and they would listen and adjust their treatment. Typical treatment was some hands-on work followed by various strengthening exercises. I was given exercises to do at home. They made sure I understood how to do them properly before leaving. All in all, I finished up able to do my hiking again pain-free. I recommend their services.”

for his high school newspaper and took on an editing role, he realized one crucial issue: He hated it. So, he had to find a new path. With a passion for athletics and an interest in the mechanics of the human body, Ben graduated from Western University with a doctoral degree in physical therapy. It was through his coursework and shadow opportunities that Ben discovered it was physical therapy — not sports journalism — that piqued his interest the most. “I really liked that the PTs were spending time with patients,” Ben says. “They were putting their skills to practical use and helping people achieve their goals. I saw myself doing that in the future.” And he was right. Ben has been with OPTM of Saratoga for more than 10 years, and he currently serves as its clinic director. Ben has had a leadership role with OPTM of Saratoga for a few years now, but as Dr. Fabrice Rockich steps into his new role regionally with Golden Bear Physical Therapy, Ben is taking on more responsibilities at the clinic — another role he enjoys. “The core of what I do is helping patients,” Ben says. “I like the fact that through the clinical director role, I feel like I can help more people.” Ben also assists as a clinic instructor for student physical therapists and new PTs, once again molding the future of care through his knowledge. When he isn’t leading our team, Ben is likely spending time with his family or renovating his new home. He and his wife have a 19-month-old son and live near both sets of grandparents in San Jose. The family bought a house in 2021, and most of Ben’s free time — when he isn’t reading or playing guitar, golf, or beach volleyball — is spent fixing their new home.

–Peter B.

“I went to OPTM for my knee after an ACL replacement. I had a really good experience, and they helped rehab my knee so I was back in action. My physical therapist was friendly, knowledgeable, and helped my knee heal and get stronger. When my therapist was out, I worked with another person who was just as helpful. The place was always clean and well-maintained. I loved the equipment they had. I would’ve kept going for just general health if it was possible.”

–Tara A.

“I was back again this year with a nagging hip injury. Still super happy with the PT and the printed ‘homework’ as well as the well- organized office. I especially like how they take care of dealing with insurance so I don’t have to. OPTM is the only place I will go.”

–Gary D.

“After getting a hip replacement, I went to OPTM where I saw Todd for a couple months of physical therapy. He was awesome. He helped me get back to normal. I was extremely happy with the care I received from Todd.”

–Gail M.

“I’ve gone for several months now to OPTM and have received wonderful care from Ben and Tyler. Both are excellent in their field, and I’m on my way to recovery. I’m so thankful Dr. Harairi recommend both of them at OPTM.”

We’re excited for the Turner family’s latest adventures and to have a devoted practitioner leading our clinic!

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR YOUR JOINTS

How to Fix Bad Habits

What you do — or don’t do — every day can impact how your joints feel and function, both now and long term. While creating your New Year’s resolutions for 2022, be sure to make some goals for healthier joints!

BAD HABITS THAT DIMINISH JOINTS — AND HOW TO FIX THEM

Thumb Texting Experts state that your thumbs are responsible for 60% of the function in your hands. Using your thumbs to text puts 12 times the pressure on them and also sets them in an awkward position, which can stress your joints. Using your thumbs to text is impossible to avoid, but you can use the voice-to-text feature more to message others. This will help minimize the pressure you put on your thumbs. Cracking Knuckles The sound your knuckles make when you crack them happens when your ligaments snap against your bones or when fluid bubbles burst around your joints. Cracking your knuckles can cause hand swelling or even a weaker grip. Research has not shown if knuckle cracking could lead to arthritis, but cracking them repetitively over years can lead to trauma to the joints and cartilage. An alternative is to squeeze a stress ball to strengthen your muscles and grip. The ball has a weight resistance so it can be used for exercise. Unsupportive Shoes Shoes that don’t support your feet and ankles, or shoes that place your feet in an awkward position, can cause foot pain and joint problems. Poor

footwear can include high heels, flip-flops, and slippers. Substitute these for a supportive pair of walking shoes or sneakers. This will reduce back and foot pain. But too much of a good thing can cause pain. Too much cushion or arch support can put your feet in an uncomfortable position. Find a happy medium! Carrying Heavy Bags Loading too much into your backpack or purse can strain the muscles in your neck, shoulders, and back. Weigh your bag when it is full; it should be no more than 5% of your body weight. If your bag is too heavy, lighten your load! Avoid carrying around unnecessary objects and only carry what you need. Have any questions about joint pain and how to reduce it? Allow OPTM of Saratoga to help you. Call us at 408- 973-7700 to book an appointment. Your joints will love you for it!

CRISPY FISH WITH BROWN BUTTER SAUCE

Inspired by BonAppetit.com

Want to enjoy the decadence of the holiday season without adding too much to your waistline? Swap red meat for fish and serve this delicious, easy dish.

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 4 5-oz Chilean sea bass or salmon fillets, skin-on • Salt and pepper, to taste • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into pieces • 1/2 cup blanched hazelnuts, chopped • 2 tsp lemon juice • Lemon wedges, for garnish

1. In an unheated skillet, add oil. Season fish with salt and pepper, then add to skillet (skin-down). 2. Heat the skillet to medium and cook for 4 minutes. With a spatula, press each fillet down, rotating between fillets every few seconds. When the skin begins to crisp, stop pressing and cook 8–10 minutes, then flip and cook for another minute. Remove the fish. 3. Wipe the skillet clean and return to medium heat. Add the butter and hazelnuts. Heat, swirling continuously, until butter foams and browns. Remove from heat. 4. Stir in lemon juice and season to taste. Pour over fish, garnish, and serve with salad.

Why Basketball Is a Christmas Day Tradition Page 4

Why Basketball Is a Christ

Nothing says Christmas quite like basketball — at least, that’s been the case since 1947. In addition to stockings, eggnog, and general yuletide cheer, each Christmas Day brings about an annual lineup of basketball games featuring the National Basketball Association’s best of the best, and it’s become a time-honored tradition.

However, for loyal fans and viewers, the tradition has sparked a few great moments, including the following greatest games, statistics, and achievements — plus a potential record to watch for this year. • Kings of Christmas Day: Since their initial 1947 debut, the New York Knicks have gone on to play the most holiday games of any other NBA team. They have 22 wins and 31 losses, giving them the most losses on Christmas Day. (Until recently, they had the most wins, too, but the Los Angeles Lakers now hold that title.) • Point Pros: This year could be a historic one for the NBA. LeBron James is slated to surpass the late Kobe Bryant for the most points scored on Christmas Day. James just needs 13 points to outpace Bryant when the Lakers host the Brooklyn Nets this year. However, the title for most points scored on a single Christmas Day game goes to Bernard King of the Knicks, who scored 60 points in a 1984 loss to the then-New Jersey Nets.

But where in the North Pole did this idea come from?

While it’s hard to pinpoint an exact reason, the NBA has hosted Christmas Day games since 1947, when the New York Knicks beat the Providence Steamrollers 89–75. For decades, teams across the league would play their regional rivals on Dec. 25, ensuring the basketball season moved forward and players didn’t have to travel too far from their families. That looks different today. In contrast to the National Football League’s Thanksgiving Day games, where the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys always play, Christmas Day is now reserved for the NBA’s top teams. In many ways, this is a marketing ploy designed to heighten NBA viewership on a day when few other sports host games, and by using their best teams, the NBA can ensure viewers are treated to great games.

You can catch all five Christmas Day games on ESPN and ABC this Christmas Day!
