CHEERS, RALEIGH!
CELEBRATING THE GROWING CRAFT BREWERY SCENE IN OUR CITY
If you have lived in Raleigh long enough, then you know there are three things about our city that are undeniably true. For starters, the Tar Heels reign supreme. There’s no other team we would rather root for throughout March Madness — or any sporting event for that matter. Secondly, you’re going to run into someone who didn’t grow up here, no matter where you go. Raleigh is a booming city, and with new people flocking here every day, there’s always a chance you’re going to meet someone who has adopted North Carolina as home. Finally, the craft beer scene in Raleigh is one of the best in the world, and that’s not just my opinion! Raleigh was named the sixth best beer destination in the world, followed by Berlin, Atlanta, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Austin. If you have ever had a chance to check out one of our many breweries, you know this ranking is no fluke. I’m not a heavy drinker by any means, but I do enjoy having a beer or two with friends at a local brewery or taphouse. Of course, Raleigh Brewing Company tops my list as a favorite
spot. In fact, my wife and I are planning our son’s first birthday party at this spot! A first birthday party is more for the adults anyway. Lonerider Brewing Company is another great spot, and I enjoy stopping into Bond Brothers Beer Company or Fortnight Brewing Company, too. I always want to support other small businesses in our community. It’s neat when you have a small business that starts with a brew or two and then grows into a full operation in our community. They become local mainstays, and anything we can do to support that is worth our time and money. Plus, these taphouses become a hub for meeting and engaging with new people. As I mentioned, many people are moving to Raleigh from across the country, and it’s easy to meet someone new at a local brewery, and being able to share a glass or two of locally made beer makes it even better. If you’re a fan of craft beer and supporting local small businesses, you have to check out Brewgaloo 2020. Held at the end of April each
year, Brewgaloo welcomes more than 110 craft breweries from across North Carolina! The festival is the largest craft beer festival in the state — and the second largest festival of its kind in the country — and we’re lucky enough to have it right in our backyard. Last year, 40,000 people made it out to the event. I’ve been to Brewgaloo in the past, and it’s a pretty great experience. If you have a chance, I recommend buying tickets now and checking it out. (You could also volunteer if you want to get involved!) I’m proud to live in Raleigh, and the local color that makes this city great continues to flourish. If you’re looking for a second act in your retirement, I don’t think you can go wrong with working in a local brewery. It’s a chance to get to know some of the locals, get you involved in your community, and, as a bonus, you have a front-row seat to the sixth-greatest brewery scene in the world. How’s that for a retirement plan?
Cheers,
–Wes White

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY IN YOUR GOLDEN YEARS 3 TIPS FOR CHANGING CAREERS LATER IN LIFE
SEEK GUIDANCE
It’s 6 a.m. on Monday morning, and your alarm clock blares in your face. You groan and, with the thought of another week looming over you, pull yourself out of bed. But the early wake-up call is the least of your worries. Another week has begun, and you’re still stuck in a job that you no longer love or maybe never did. Does this sound familiar? If so, you may believe changing careers isn’t worth the hassle, especially if you’re close to retirement, but here’s the secret: It’s not too late! There’s nothing stopping you from finding a career you love later in life. Here are three tips to get you started.
it’s like. Job searching can be exhausting, and some job requirements can look overwhelming. But getting stuck in your ways and focusing on the things you cannot do will only hinder your ability to find a job you actually love. Instead, take a deep breath and be open to what comes. You may discover a hidden talent or passion! Money matters, but it shouldn’t be your first priority on the job hunt. Instead, consider what’s going to make you the happiest. What’s your dream job? What have you always enjoyed doing? If money wasn’t an option, what would you be doing right now instead of counting down the hours to 5 p.m.? Be realistic in your goals and find something you love. FORGET THE MONEY
Remember, you’re not alone in this fight! Plenty of people switch careers midway through their lives to focus on something they really enjoy. Seek guidance from those who have had a similar experience and look to professional job hunters or consultants for help. Furthermore, after years in the same job or industry, you’re bound to have made a few connections. Reach out for professional support. Regardless of what path you choose, remember that a career you enjoy is always possible. We can’t promise that you’ll love getting up at 6 a.m., but at least you won’t dread what comes next.
BE FLEXIBLE
If it’s been a while since you’ve hunted for a job, then you may have forgotten what
THINKING AHEAD SAVING FOR COLLEGE AND THE FUTURE
Retirement is the start of your golden years. It’s all about enjoying some much-deserved relaxation and soaking up every moment you can. But it’s also a great time to consider your family’s future. Many parents and grandparents want to provide their children and grandchildren with more opportunities, and one of the many ways to do that is to save for their future. In this age of rising tuition
grandchildren’s futures — regardless of whether it’s for college or not — can be the best choice. Our team can help you establish parameters for spending and access to the trust to protect your money for its intended use. You can also place someone in charge of the trust, who will then be able to make determinations based on your family’s needs. College is a great option for many young adults, but there are those who choose to enter the career field after high school. This is still a viable option, and the creation of a trust helps protect and serve your family without the limitations of a 529 plan. However, 529 plans also offer tax-free incentives that may be the best option for your family. The bottom line is that saving for your children and grandchildren’s futures can be very simple, and you don’t have to save a small fortune to make it beneficial. There are options that will be the best fit for your family — and our team can help you find it. Give our team a call to get started.
costs, a plan for higher-education savings can be one of the best gifts you give your family.
A simple way to save for your family’s future is through a Section 529 Educational Savings Plan. The biggest benefit of a 529 plan is that it grows tax-free, and your grandchildren can use the money without getting taxed if the contributions go toward higher education costs. If the money is used for other costs, it does incur a small tax. This makes 529 plans ideal for smaller contributions and savings.

NORTH CAROLINA’S BASEBALL HISTORY ROOT, ROOT, ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM
Grab your peanuts and Cracker Jacks! Baseball is back. There’s no better way to spend a spring or summer day than catching a game at the local ballpark, and while you’re there, impress your friends and fellow fans with these fun facts about North Carolina’s contribution to baseball.
PASSING TIME IN THE JAIL YARD
Baseball’s origins in North Carolina can be linked all the way back to the Civil War. When Union troops were captured and held at Salisbury Prison, they played the game to pass the time. After the war, the game spread throughout the state, and nearly every town in North Carolina had its own team. College and high school teams dominated, but by the early 20th century, North Carolina became a hub for professional minor league teams. In fact, at one point, only Texas had more minor league teams comprised of players vying for a spot on a major roster. More than 300 major leaguers can call North Carolina their home state, and six of those players have been inducted into the Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Hall of Fame. These include Luke Appling, Rick Ferrell, Jim “Catfish” Hunter, Buck Leonard — who got his start playing in the Negro Leagues — Enos Slaughter, and Hoyt Wilhelm. In addition to these superstars, North Carolina legend Durham Bulls’ fame hit the silver screen with the 1988 movie “Bull Durham.” The movie and North Carolina’s prestige as a minor league state pushed it into the upper echelons of baseball training. Of course, no list of North Carolina sports facts is complete without mentioning our Tar Heels. Last year, our boys were just one win away from back-to-back College World Series appearances, and this year, the team is using that loss as motivation. The Tar Heels have a long storied history of producing championship-winning teams. The college’s first appearance in college baseball’s biggest game came in 1960. The team also became the first and only ACC baseball team in history to boast an undefeated record in conference play in 1964. How’s that for some Tar Heel pride?
