What’s Going on With TikTok? An Attorney’s Perspective on the TikTok Ban
Spying hardware isn’t as flashy as you’d see in an espionage movie. In reality, it’s a computer chip that is barely larger than a grain of rice. The threat to cybersecurity is so subliminal and difficult to detect that the growing strife between the U.S. and China only really got nationwide attention in 2018, when Amazon found microchips (designed by a Chinese company Supermicro) in their computers that weren’t part of the original design. U.S. officials had been warning for years that hardware made by Chinese technology giants Huawei Corp. and ZTE Corp. could potentially carry Chinese government hardware or malware — this incident confirmed their suspicions. As tensions rose, the stakes did, too. While the details have been banned from the public, Huawei’s chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada. Now, in 2020, President Trump has put a ban on TikTok. Some people have been utterly confused by this, especially since they may not have been aware of the details of the ongoing security war between the U.S. and China. So, what’s really going on here? First, it’s important for us to talk a little bit about what kind of information our social media can track. If I were to talk about Facebook or Twitter, this cover would be several court hearings long, so let’s just focus on TikTok. If you’re not familiar, TikTok is a platform where you can watch 15-second clips of musicians, comedians, motivational speakers, or any other influencer or entertainer you can think of.
