What do the Masters Tournament and Cirque du Soleil have in common? You might not see any connection, but as a physical therapist, I find both golf and dance fascinating to watch for the same reason: They push the human body to its limits. Every time I watch the Cirque du Soleil dancers climb onto a human pyramid, soar through the air, dangle from hoops, and twist themselves into contortionist pretzels, I can’t help but think, “Human bodies shouldn’t be able to do that!” It’s amazing to watch. I get the same feeling when I watch sports. I love analyzing the human body, its range of motion, its impeccable timing, and how each person moves. I’ve only played golf once or twice in my life, but I still enjoy watching tournaments because of seeing the bodies in motion. I also watch for my patients! Many of them are golfers, and through them, I’ve learned a lot about golf’s impact on the human body. Golf swings are infamous for causing back pain. But the actual source of the pain might not be what you think. Many golfers assume that if they’re experiencing back pain that means they need to train for a stronger core and a stronger back. But in fact, the hips play a big role in causing back pain, too. If your hips are tight and don’t rotate well when you swing, you’ll twist your back even more to compensate for them. Over time, this leads directly to back pain. So, what can you do? The best way to ease the load on your back is to learn how to place your feet. How to do this depends on the source of your pain. That could be a lack of mobility in your hips or tightness in your chest or shoulders. The physical therapists on my team can help you figure that out with a Golfer’s Mobility

Screening. We can also determine whether the problem is because of soft tissue or a bony block caused by your anatomy. Every body has different limits, and you won’t know yours until you’re examined by a professional.

If your hips turn out to be the issue, there might be a simple fix. Next time you golf, point your feet outward when you take your stance. That may help ease the stress on your back, but I’d still recommend strengthening and mobility training, too. Working on your balance, hip mobility, hip strength, and posture can help your upper back and chest move more easily. The golfers I’ve helped report that after working with me, they can balance better and hit the ball straighter and farther, too! If you’re training for golf season right now, I’d love to help. This month, I’m offering $27 consultations for Golfer's Mobility Screenings at the clinic. These appointments usually cost more than $150. We’ll check the mobility of your hips and the rest of your body, conduct strength tests, and determine whether you’re ready for success on the green. – Dr. Jennifer Penrose

As people grow older, they’re more likely to find themselves at home with less company. If your family members live far away or you have physical limitations that make it difficult to leave the house, you may be at an increased risk of experiencing loneliness. This is why adopting an animal can be so helpful. Pets offer comfort and love, and many encourage physical activity. Integrating a pet into your life as you grow older can be just what you need to lift your spirit and keep you healthy. The Benefits of Pet Ownership A lack of purpose can take a significant toll, but the sense of duty pet owners have around caring for their animals helps them avoid this. The daily tasks of feeding, playing with, and walking your animal can help provide structure and bring meaning to your life. They also give you something to look forward to each day. What’s better than waking up or coming home to a wagging tail or loud meow? This is how pets help improve their owners’ mental and physical health. Studies also show that those who care for pets have less stress and lower blood pressure and cholesterol than their petless counterparts. You’re also more likely to maintain a daily exercise routine. FELINE FRIENDS OR CANINE COMRADES HOW PETS IMPROVE OUR HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Humans have an innate need to be social, and without someone to talk to regularly, our mental well-being can start to deteriorate. Pets may not be the best conversation partners, but they may increase your social activity. Walking a dog to a local park every day, for example, can provide an opportunity for you to interact with other people. If you live alone, this simple activity can increase your social circle and improve your mental health. Find the Right Pet Before taking advantage of the many benefits pets offer, it’s crucial to consider which pet is right for you. Doing research can help answer important questions about which animals might be a good fit for you and your lifestyle and which aren’t. Finding a perfect match may take some time, but once that connection is made, there is nothing that will bring more joy into both of your lives. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a list of questions that will help guide you to the perfect pet. Take a look at CDC.gov/healthypets .

DON’T SLEEP ON THESE TRACKING DEVICES WANT A BETTER NIGHT’S REST?

Sleep is essential for good health. It recharges your body and helps you start your day refreshed and alert. With so many wearable devices and sleep tracking apps on the market now, you may be wondering if you should be tracking your sleep. If any of the following apply to you, you may benefit from using a sleep tracker. • You have difficulty sleeping soundly. You wake up repeatedly throughout the night, either due to environmental noises (a snoring partner) or a sleep disorder (sleep apnea). • You feel exhausted during the day.
