2021 HAS BEEN A YEAR FOR THE RECORD BOOKS.

I hope that you had a good holiday season. Christmas is my family’s favorite time of the year. Since the big kids have moved away, when they come home it is a chance for us to all get together and just catch up. You may know exactly what that feels like. We get really goofy when we are all in the same room. It is so fun. We love playing card games and just spending time together. And this year, no one was in quarantine.

Quick Kid Update Soph is back in LA full time and has an awesome roommate… from Collierville believe it or not. Crazy how life works out sometimes. She is working likemost folks in the entertainment business do: one job at a time; lots of auditions. Stone is loving Alabama. He is officially a Sig Ep and has made some amazing friends. We are working on time management with him.

How t o FR i e n l i d ef f r om Your Sciatica

Understanding how to treat sciatica Sciatica is diagnosed through a physical therapy evaluation that includes a thorough history and physical examination. Sometimes a CT scan or MRI may be used to confirm the physical therapist’s conclusions. Once you are diagnosed with sciatica, a physical therapist will work with you to manage and relieve the condition. This includes: • Reducing sciatica pain • Improving motion • Increasing strength • Improving flexibility • Educating you on how to sit, stand, bend, and twist • Returning to normal activities Targeted stretching and strengthening exercises are vital to treating

Have you been suffering from lower back pain that radiates into your buttocks and down your leg? Youmay be experiencing sciatica. At Pittman Physical Therapy, our physical therapists are experts at treating sciatica and helping you find relief! Sciatica, also referred to as “lumbar radiculopathy,” is a pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates from the lower back. The sciatic nerve extends from the lumbar spine through the area of the buttocks and down the legs into the toes, making it the largest nerve in the human body. When this nerve becomes irritated, pain or paresthesias ensue. Typically the symptoms are felt in the lumbar area, down the leg behind the thigh and into the lower leg and foot. The pain can make it difficult to sleep, sit, bend or walk. The most common cause of sciatica is lumbar disc herniation, but it can be caused by an injury or severe disc degeneration, as well. Contact Pittman Physical Therapy today to set up an appointment with one of our experts. We’ll provide you with the relief you need to live life comfortably once again!

sciatica pain. Our physical therapists will teach you an exercise program you can do at home to manage your pain. Many exercises can help strengthen the muscles of the spinal column. Most of these exercises focus on improving your core. The core comprises muscles in the lower back, abdominals (stomach), gluteus (buttock), and hip muscles. Strong coremuscles can provide pain relief because they support the spine, keeping it in alignment and facilitatingmovements that extend or twist the spine with less chance of injury or damage. Targeted stretches for sciatica are designed to target restrictions in the joints and muscles that contribute to your pain. The initial assessment will help your therapist establish what’s known as a “directional preference,” meaning what helps the patient feel and move better. Your home program will focus on improving your pain and restoring your motion so you can resume the activities you enjoy! How a physical therapist can help you If you’re experiencing sciatica, contact one of our physical therapists immediately. Your physical therapist will perform a thorough physical examination and provide you with solutions that work based on their findings. Your therapist will identify the best way to resolve your sciatica pain using directional preference and strengthening exercises. They will examine how you respond to specific movements and positions. These particular movements and positions become the starting point for treatment. Next, your therapist will focus on areas where you struggle with weakness or develop compensations due to sciatica pain. These exercises will be targeting your core strength. In addition, your

therapist will guide you through the postures that help alleviate your pain and minimize the risks of it returning. As you progress and improve, your physical therapist will expand on your exercises and stretches by making themmore intensive over time. This will help increase your overall strength and range of motion. We will spend one-on-one time with you on each visit, using hands-on techniques that get the joints, muscles, and nerves moving again. We will also design a comprehensive exercise and education program to get you back to comfortably doing what you want to do. PATIENT SPOTLIGHT "Pittman Physical Therapy has been there since the beginning of my injury adventures. Recently, I attended a basketball camp with my team at Briarcrest and dislocated my knee. Previously, Pittman had helped me recover from a foot surgery, so of course I went straight to them to help me with my knee recovery. I tried not to have surgery, but if I wanted to play Basketball my sophomore season, Dr. Biggers and my PT said I would have to have surgery. I was told that I would have a 6 month recovery, but with the help of my physical therapists and the hard work I put in, I fully recovered in 4 1/2 months. I worked with Mallory, Jeff, Tessa, Maranda, and a few other people in the practice. I will forever be thankful for the hard work they put into helping me play the sport I love most." hasn’t been what we expected, though. It is now a New Year’s clinic. It was supposed to be a Thanksgiving clinic. Delays, no workers, deadlines not being hit. You name it, it happened. BUT… it is all coming together now and it is PRETTY. We have learned a ton through this experience. I cannot wait for you to see it. The new clinic is on Poplar at 9087 suite 103. Speaking of shutting down, I just saw on social media that some kid predicted that 2021 would be the year that the world would be healthy and all diseases would be cured. HAHAHA. Well… he was a little wrong. I am so looking forward to 2022. It will be somuch better than 2021. The power of positive thinking is real! It will start out really good anyway. You may already know that we are opening location #2 in Germantown. If you didn’t, you do now. We are super excited. The construction process

Brinkley is taller than Sophie and dancing like a queen. We have had to work on her knee a bit though. Her kneecap popped out a couple of times. It was weird with no previous injury. I think it has a lot to do with a few factors: growing fast, being female (not that boys don’t have kneecap problems, but the anatomy of a female predisposes them to have more knee issues), and weakness in stability muscles. I can’t help her with the first two, but on the last one, I got

When David came to us, he had just had neck surgery, and the pain from that was horrible. It was in his shoulders, all the way down to his hands. With our tasks, he was able to regain most of his motion, all the while reducing his neck pain! “It was great. Anna and Stephanie were great. They did a great job getting me to be pain-free. They pushed me to get back to where I needed to be.” David wants anyone who is on the fence about Physical Therapy to know “Come here and get the help you need!” David's recovery is amazing, and we are so happy to have served him!
