A CHRISTMAS PARTY CELEBRATION OCCASION

Our Annual Christmas Party

Going into December, Premier Rehab PT is celebrating our 15th anniversary. All of us are so excited to reach this milestone and are eager to push forward into the new year. Not only does this mean that we’re continuing to grow as a business, but also that we’re able to help our community even more.

Through our growth, we remain the same company we always have been. As this is our 15th year, our staff is so grateful to have so much support from you, our patients, over the years, and we thank you for being with us on this wonderful journey.

Every year, we put together a large Christmas party for everyone in the office to attend. It’s always a success, and everyone has a great time. Last year, we had a dinner reservation at a nice restaurant, back in their private room, which the staff thoroughly enjoyed. This year, we’re combining our 15th anniversary celebration with our annual office holiday party, where everyone from each of our six clinics is invited to come. Due to how much we’ve grown and our different locations, there are many staff members at Premier Rehab PT who haven’t had the chance to meet yet. The Christmas party is a perfect opportunity for everyone to introduce themselves and mingle. Including friends and spouses, there will be around 80 people attending. Instead of having the party in a restaurant, this year it will take place in a hall, similar to a wedding reception venue, so that we can accommodate everyone. At the Christmas party, we’ll also have a gift game like Secret Santa. At the beginning of the month, each team member filled out a piece of paper with a little something about themselves. The Secret Santa who draws their name will have an idea about what to get for them and gets to know them better. Everyone

is required to bring three gifts — one is homemade, one is a regift, and the last is a $10 gift. Bringing three gifts instead of one allows the person to be creative and makes the Secret Santa gifting much more interesting for everyone participating. “This year, we’re combining our 15th anniversary celebration with our annual office holiday party, where everyone from each of our six clinics is invited to come.” “ Along with the Secret Santa game, there will be music, drinks, and food. We’ll also have a slide show and will give out awards throughout the evening, which we do each year. We have a few awards that are based on characteristics of different staff members, such as the Best Laugh or Most Bubbly. We also recognize the staff members who have been with us for five, 10, and 15 years by giving them a crystal award.

We hope that each of you has a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

KEEPING HEALTHY IN THE NEW YEAR HOWTO STICK TO YOUR GOALS

Everyone is eager to start fresh with New Year’s resolutions. Whether it’s to begin exercising, lose weight, or drop a bad habit, most people will find that within a few weeks into the new year, their commitment wanes. How do you maintain passion for your goals? DECIDE ON YOUR GOALS Coming up with a plan that you can follow is crucial to accomplishing your goals. An easy way to do this is by sticking with the SMART method: Make your objectives specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time- based. It’s easier to accomplish resolutions if they are set within the realistic boundaries SMART provides. PICK YOUR FAVORITE You may have a long list of resolutions you would like to achieve in the next year. However, trying to tackle more than one goal at a time can be overwhelming. Many people burn out before accomplishing even one. To counter this, choose to focus on one objective at a time. Once you’ve achieved it, you can move on to the next one. FIND SUPPORT When you set a goal for yourself, whether you’re deciding to exercise more or quit smoking, it’s important

to build a support system around you. This could be family, friends, a support group, or an exercise class. Having people around you supporting your decision can encourage you to accomplish more and strengthen your resolve. Knowing there are individuals that you can speak to about both your successes and struggles will also help manage your stress in a healthy way. DON’T BE HARD ON YOURSELF You’re allowed to have a bad day. If you end up not going to the gym for a day or even a week because your schedule becomes too busy, don’t beat yourself up about it. Taking an occasional break from your workout is recommended, because it allows your body time to rest and heal. Recovering from the slip-up and getting back on track is essential, too. Mistakes happen. Ensure that you come back from them, and you’ll be stronger and more resilient than ever. Following your New Year’s resolutions might seem impossible, but with the right mindset and help, anything is achievable. Set and chase your dreams in 2019!

SURVIVING THE SEASON OF SWEETS How to Indulge Your Sweet Tooth With Less Sugar

overindulge. Dried fruit is high in sugar and calories, but the fiber and vitamins make fruit much healthier than just about any other sugary treat.

Cookies, cakes, and pies, oh my! The holiday season is brimming with sweet treats of all kinds. Sometimes it can feel like candy and sugary desserts are around every corner, and yet you still want to indulge. However, when you consider that over 50 percent of Americans are insulin-resistant, prediabetic, or diabetic, that piece of pumpkin pie with whipped cream starts to look more dangerous than appetizing. During the holidays, how can you satisfy your sweet tooth without worrying about consuming excessive sugar and calories? Skip the candy and go for the fruits and nuts. Keeping a bowl of fruit and nuts nearby can help keep sugar cravings at bay. Dried fruits, such as cranberries, pineapple, or apricots, are both sweet and nutritious. Just be sure to check the packaging for added sugars. You can even make your own dried fruit with a food dehydrator. This way, you are completely in control of the ingredients. No matter what you do, just be mindful not to

Another way to cut down on your sugar intake is to use dark chocolate in all your chocolate-based treats. Dark chocolate has about half as much sugar as milk chocolate, twice as much healthy fat, less cholesterol, 4–5 times more iron, twice as much potassium, fewer carbs, and more flavonoids and theobromine. The antioxidant properties of the theobromine and flavonoids make dark chocolate as good for your heart as it is for your soul. If you have a recipe that calls for chocolate, reach for the dark stuff, whether it’s dark chocolate chips, cocoa powder, or baking chocolate. While it may seem as though everyone and their grandma is overindulging in sugar this season, know that you have the choice to opt for healthier sweets. And come New Year’s, you won’t have to spend the first few months of 2019 working off that extra cookie weight.

THE HISTORY OF THE MAGI

Wise Men or Sorcerers?

The story of the three wise men visiting Jesus is a focal point in the Judeo-Christian telling of the birth of the Christ. Their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh demonstrate reverence for the child through symbolism: Gold symbolized kingship; frankincense was commonly burned in temples and represented the spiritual stature that Jesus would hold; and myrrh was used in preparing bodies for burial, foreshadowing his eventual crucifixion. While the Magi’s role in the birth of Jesus is well- known, not much is understood about the men themselves and their connection to the baby in the manger. Historically known as Magi, the three “wise men” are known for their study of the stars. The Magi were some of the earliest astrologers. Until the 17th century, astrology and astronomy weren’t separate fields of study. Astrology included both the study of how the stars and

planets affect human life and the position and motion of the cosmic bodies. In the Persian Empire, Magi were known as astrologer- priests, delineating the fate of men they saw written in the stars. But while they are known for interpreting the significance of planetary movements for human life, many historians suggest there could have been more to their jobs than astrology. “Magi” comes from the Greek word “magos,” which means magic. Early interpretations of magos included alchemy and sorcery along with astronomy. Speculations swirl among many biblical scholars about the true nature of the Magi, as some tellings portray them as illusionists or fortune-tellers. In a cultural context, the Magi were revered across the Middle East. Along with their knowledge, they had stature and wealth that

allowed them to bestow gifts upon those they deemed important. The act of giving presents to a child wasn’t a regular practice for the Magi, and thus the event was significant for the time. While only three Magi are portrayed in the familiar nativity story, the real event would have included many servants. As a matter of fact, the Bible never mentions the number of Magi who visited Jesus, leaving interpretations open as to how many Magi traveled to Bethlehem. In the early seventh century, the Magi were pushed to the outer rims of Africa and India due to the rising popularity of Islam. Since someone could only be considered Magi by birth, it is widely accepted that the line of succession eventually ended, and the Magi faded into history.
