PROGRESSIVE LENSES | General Info

Presbyopia Accommodation loss is part of the natural aging process. Starting at birth our lenses lose elasticity and therefor its ability to focus on all distances. Nearest point to focus moves further away. It becomes noticeable at around 40. To correct presbyopia reading glasses are one option. A much more comfortable solution are progressive lenses for sharp vision and focus at all distances.

Progressive Lens Design Comparisons

Individual design

Advantages of Individual compared to Conventional Designs

Conventional designs use set, standard values in addition to the RX .

Since each person has different individual visual habits the results are seldom satisfying.

Conventional designs : Pre-designed blanks are used for production. Optimization of viewing zones is extremely limited.

RX value – Position of wear

Power of a lens is the dioptre value measured with a lensometer .

Position of wear is the dioptre value measured in a specific reference point of a lens in specific usage position. Light rays do not pass through the same reference points comparing lensometer with distance and especially near vision, resulting in different values between measured power and the power experienced by the wearer (“eye & lens system”) are the result.

Progressive lenses calculated based on measured values in distance or near reference points equal the power of the order but not the refractive power. The latest design progressive lenses using position of wear for calculation equal the refractive power but not the order. The stronger the RX, the bigger the difference might be. Spherical lenses could have induced cylinders values as well. Reason being is correction of aberrations. For individualized progressive lenses individual parameters such as BVD, pantoscopic tilt, etc., are considered when calculating lenses. These could have a significant influence on the measured power - especially on the addition .

Fitting Recommendations

• Fitting is generally based on distance decentration. • Put the fitting cross in the center of the pupil while the customer keeps a natural head and body position, looking straight ahead in the zero line of vision. • Eye movement must be considered when centering if prism is prescribed.
