SPORTS FUNCTIONAL TRAINING

The primary benefit of functional training is to allow the athlete to move in all three planes of motion effectively and without injury. Traditional methods of training use free weights and machines to build muscle by isolating certain muscle groups. This limits the athlete to specific patterns and does not allow the athlete to be dynamic. Functional training utilizes multiple muscles at once, which in turn allows the athlete to move in multiple planes. These exercises not only improve the overall strength of the athlete, but they help to build a strong core which improves the balance, agility, speed and general physical fitness of that athlete

Research has proven that athletes who train functionally on multiple planes experienced a 58% increase in strength, while improving their balance by 196%*. There was also a decrease of 30% in overall pain and incidents of injury*.

Do you experience pain with normal everyday tasks like taking milk out of the fridge, lifting something overhead, bending, or simply walking a distance? Having pain with movement, especially if it goes on for more than a few days, may be indicative of tendonitis. The tendons are what connect your muscles to the bones. Under normal circumstances, your tendons can handle a lot of work and force, but when theyareover-worked, theybecome inflamed, causingyoupain.Tendonitiscan occurpracticallyanywhere in thebody, but ismostcommon in thehips, knees, wrists, elbows, andshoulders.Thereason for this isquitesimple:poorposture over a period of time. If you are at a computer or sitting for a good part of the day, your shoulders tend to slouch forward and your back muscles weaken. How’s Your Posture? Poor posture weakens your back muscles, affecting your ability to do normal everydaytasks.Theweakenedmusclesandpoorpostureplaceabnormalstrain on the shoulders, elbows, knees, and hip tendons. Therefore, depending on

where the greatest strain is placed, you will most likely experience tendonitis. Tendonitis can be short-lived, but can also become chronic in nature and last for a long time. Chronic tendonitis actually disintegrates the quality of your tendons over time and can lead to tearing. Most people experience tendonitis on a gradual basis. At first it may be soreness, but if the irritation continues, it canbecomeexcruciatingpain, affectingyourabilitytodomanysimpleactivities. Tendonitis can also come from injuries that strain the tendons. This can be from a direct blow like a fall or an overstretching injury in a sports activity. 3 Most Importnant Things About Your Running Shoes

Problems with running increase as we age and are a leading cause of falls and disability in older adults. At least 20% of adults over 65 have problems with running. This further increases to 50% in adults 85 years old and older. Problems with running are not always a direct consequence of getting older. Rather, they are the effects of other conditions that become more common and severe with age. One thing that can be done to help with problems running is to invest in a proper pair of running shoes. Here are the 3 most important things about your running shoes: 1. Break in Period If you’re trying on shoes that feel heavy, stiff, clunky or not just right they likely are the wrong shoes for you. The right pair will feel comfortable as soon as you put them on: light weight, cushioned, and balanced. 2 . Level If you feel your arches “tipping in” or “pushed out”, then the support is wrong for you. Too much support will restrict your foot and give the feeling you’re tipped out. Too little support may feel like your foot is caving in and give the tipped in feeling. The proper pair will feel balanced and level. 3. Size Running shoes should have ample toe room, but secure from the ball of the foot to the heel. Your feet will splay out over time and it’s not uncommon to go up in size. Running shoes won’t break in, so they need to feel like they fit the second you put them on.

CONOR PERREAULT // SENIOR Track & Cross Country

"I first started coming to Rebound Fitness halfway through my junior year of highschool. I was recovering from a stress fracture in my hip that had derailed my last cross country season. I was trying to figure out a way to get my running career back on track. I spent the first several weeks working just to get my basic strength and mobility back into my hip but quickly realized how many other weaknesses I had. When I went to Rebound Fitness, Greg evaluated my running mechanics, and was able to quickly spot the source of the injuries and pains I had endured over the past few years. I soon started to come to Rebound Fitness, for physical therapy as well as sport specific training. With all the workouts the staff at Rebound gave me, I was able to get stronger and healthier than I ever had been. By the time my senior year cross country season started, I was in the best shape of my life despite having missed nearly four months of running. As the season continued, I noticed I was able to train harder without fatiguing, and at the end of the season, I finished 5th at the IHSA State meet– a huge improvement from 80th place the year before. I was excited by this success and continued to train at Rebound over the winter to get ready for my track season. As we continued to work on my strength and form, I was more ready than ever to race. I won the 3200m indoor state final, and then continued to drop time into the outdoor season– all within a year of the injury that kept me out of running for months. Just like everyone else I have seen come to Rebound, my training has improved dramatically in a short amount of time. I am sure that I would not have had such a successful senior year or be an incoming runner for the University of Wisconsin without the help of the entire staff at Rebound Fitness" - Conor Perreault
