HOWTOTRAVEL DURING COVID-19 AND STILL HAVE A GREAT TIME

Hi Friends,

My wife and I recently drove up to Mackinaw City, Mich., and took the ferry over to Mackinac Island for a weekend getaway. Everyone was following the mask- wearing, cleaning, and distancing protocols, and it did not damper our enthusiasmor enjoyment of seeing new sights and discovering the natural andman- made wonders of the island.

If you decide to visit Mackinac Island, make sure to see the Arch Rock, go on a carriage ride, rent a bicycle and ride on the only highway in America

BOUNCE BACK FAST AND EFFECTIVELY WITH GRIT

where cars are not allowed, see the Grand Hotel and its world-record setting 660 foot porch, and buy some of Mackinac’s famous fudge.

In fact, no cars are allowed on the island, so if you call a taxi, expect a horse-drawn wagon to show up to take you to your destination.

As a business owner, you’ve had to face challenges that may have felt insurmountable at times, such as opening your business and dealing with the many ups and downs of the ever-changing economy. How do you bounce back after major setbacks or a particularly bad year for your company? How do you keep your business growing and build resilience when facing challenges? What’s the quality that keeps business owners moving forward, even when the going gets tough? Angela Duckworth calls it “grit.”You may have heard of her innovative research or her book, “Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance.”Duckworth zeroed in on this characteristic while teaching high school math. She noticed that some of her highest-achieving students weren’t the ones with the highest IQs, and some of her “smartest” students weren’t doing all that well in class. She went on to pursue this phenomenon at Penn State University. There, she studied several demographics: cadets at West Point, young teachers, and sales representatives. After numerous psychological studies, Duckworth discovered that grit was the common denominator in people who find success.

Even though we are all a bit Covid-weary at this point, many of you will likely be traveling or getting together with family and friends during Labor Day weekend. Please continue your vigilance in protecting yourselves and your communities by wearing your masks, washing your hands frequently, avoiding crowds, and taking extra care at gas stations and public spaces. Enjoy your three-day weekend and keep it fun by keeping it safe!

Duckworth defines grit as “passion and perseverance for very long-term goals.” Gritty people don’t start a project and abandon it a month later. They devote themselves to an

overarching goal that drives everything they do. According to Duckworth, someone who builds grit goes through life like a marathon, not a sprint. Based on her findings, she came up with a grit equation: talent x effort = skill, and skill x effort = achievement.

What makes Duckworth’s equation so important is the fact that it shows how much more important effort is than inherent talent. People who have grit are successful not because they naturally excel at something, but because they put in the effort needed to achieve it. A gritty person sees challenges as opportunities, not barriers. It’s this type of growth mindset that can help businesses use grit to their success. How do you begin to develop grit in yourself or in your team? First , home in on what it is about your business or work that you are passionate about. Maybe your passion is giving every customer the best possible experience with your company, or maybe you love finding customers who need your service to fulfill a need. Whatever it is, find it and zero in on it. Second , practice that passion consistently. Have conversations with customers, find out what matters to them, take part in training, and have your team participate in customer success training. Do the work to fuel this passion. Then , develop

the belief that your passion has a purpose. Concentrate on the fact that you want to give every person the best possible interaction with your business to contribute to a happier, more positive world. This belief should be integral to every move you make and every interaction your employees have with your customers. When it’s a core principle, this work is unifying. While it’s not an overnight transformation, these guidelines can at least give us hope, which is the fourth step: Hold on to the hope that you can succeed. Grit means being so strongly motivated by your need to achieve something that you continue to pursue it even when obstacles arise, and 2020 has had its fair share of obstacles. You may be exhausted, but now is the time to power your motivation. Along the way, look at failures as milestones on the journey to success. Don’t give up when something becomes challenging — getting “gritty” means failing and learning from it.

In 2018, Dutch native Emile Ratelband was 69 years old. The thing was that the motivational speaker and founder of the Ratelband Research Institute didn’t want to be 69. So, he went to a Dutch court and petitioned for the right to change his legal age. His intention was to change the year of birth on his birth certificate — bumping it up by 20 years. As a result, all records would show him as 49. What Is Age but a Number? A Dutch Man’s Quest to Change His Legal Age

says I’m 69, I don’t get an answer. When I’m 49, with the face I have, I will be in a luxurious position.”

Interestingly enough, Ratelband’s request wasn’t dismissed outright by the court. The judge found merit in the argument and said that people desire to change things about themselves all the time, adding that maybe age was one of those things we should consider —“maybe” being the operative word. The court ultimately decided that “Ratelband is at liberty to feel 20 years younger than his real age and to act accordingly.” But the judge added that changing his legal documents would have “undesirable legal and societal implications.”The court added “[T]here are a variety of rights and duties related to age, such as the right to vote and the duty to attend school. If Mr. Ratelband’s request was allowed, those age requirements would become meaningless.” Today, Ratelband is 71 and continues his battle to change his age. While he may have lost in his initial quest to legally change his age, according to NPR, he intends to appeal the decision.

Why did Ratelband want to change his age?

He told the court he didn’t feel like a man who was going on 70. He said he felt good—he felt like a man 20 years younger. He even said his doctors agreed and that they’d told himhe had the body of someone younger. But there was another major reason Ratelband wanted to change his age. He said doing so would increase his overall happiness and would be helpful on dating apps. He would no longer have to deal with the ageism that came with being 69. Ratelband even went as far as to say he would be willing to delay his pension benefits another 20 years if need be. In an interview with Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, Ratelband said, “When I’m 69, I am limited. If I’m 49, then I can buy a new house, drive a different car. I can take up more work. When I’m on Tinder and it

The Nutrients You Need During Physical Therapy FOODS FOR A FASTER RECOVERY

Attending your physical therapy appointments and doing your at-home exercises as instructed by your PT are crucial parts of your recovery process. However, they’re not the only important steps you should take. What you eat can affect how quickly and well you heal just as much as your dedication to your exercises. By incorporating a few of these foods into your diet, you can heal faster and come back stronger than ever before.

acids do wonders to control inflammation. Plus, our bodies can’t make omega-3 fatty acids naturally, so we have to get them from what we consume. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish, olive oil, avocados, pecans, walnuts, and almonds.

ANTIOXIDANT-RICH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

PROTEIN-RICH MEATS, NUTS, AND DAIRY PRODUCTS

Along with omega-3 fatty acids, the antioxidants from fruits and vegetables can also go a long way in reducing inflammation. Broccoli contains vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folic acid and several different minerals. ( Pro Tip: Cook your broccoli to maximize these nutrients!) Citrus fruits and peppers have high levels of vitamin C, and peppers have high levels of beta-carotene as well. Additionally, turmeric and garlic work wonders during the healing process.

When it comes to the proliferation and remodeling stages of healing, healthy sources of protein are the way to go. Lean meats like poultry and fish are easy sources of protein, but if you don’t eat meat, you can also get protein from beans, eggs, nuts, and dairy products. Protein-rich foods will help heal muscles and bones and prevent muscle atrophy. It’s incredible what the body can do with just a few intentionally consumed superfoods!

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS

There are three phases to the healing process: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. While you might think that inflammation is a bad thing, it’s actually a normal and necessary part of healing. That said, you should still try to reduce inflammation, as it can be harmful in excess. Foods containing omega-3 fatty

BEAM ME UP, LUCY

How Lucille Ball Saved ‘Star Trek’ in the 1960s

Did You know that Lucille Ball — the iconic comedian best known for her 1950s show“I Love Lucy”— is the reason “Star Trek” exists today? Ball was a Hollywood force in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and she produced hit after hit with her production company. In fact, Desilu, co-founded by Ball and her then-husband, Desi Arnaz, was responsible for hits like “The Andy Griffith Show” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”The two were partners in the company until their divorce in 1960, and in 1962, Ball took over Arnaz’s share. In that moment, Ball became one of the most powerful women in Hollywood, and Desilu, one of the biggest independent production companies at the time, had a lot of pull in the industry. In 1963, one of Desilu’s biggest hits was coming to an end. “The Untouchables”was a crime drama starring Robert Stack. Ball needed a replacement, and two potential shows hit Ball’s desk: “Star Trek” and “Mission: Impossible.” In 1965, Ball took the pitches to her longtime network collaborator, CBS. They said no to “Star Trek” (but yes to “Mission: Impossible”), but Ball wasn’t about to give up on this new science fiction show, so she took it to NBC. The network was skeptical at first but ordered a pilot.

The pilot starred Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike and Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. There was no James T. Kirk to be found — not yet, anyway. The pilot, titled “The Cage,”was a disappointment. NBC executives weren’t about to put it on air, but they decided to order a second pilot after Ball agreed to help finance it.

The second pilot starredWilliam Shatner as Captain Kirk, and he was joined again by Leonard Nimoy as Spock. NBC executives liked what they saw. The new pilot, titled“Where No Man Has Gone Before,”was put on NBC’s fall schedule, though it wasn’t the first episode aired on NBC. That honor went to the episode titled“The Man Trap,”which aired on Sept. 8, 1966. While Gene Roddenberry’s original “Star Trek” only lasted three seasons, it went on to become a major TV and film franchise. One of its recent iterations, “Star Trek: Discovery,” is about to enter its third season on the streaming service CBS All Access — all because Lucille Ball saw potential in a little show back in 1965.
