Walk This Way: A Journey with Kanekoa Texeira and Bobby Moore by Justin Franklin
If you just so happen to find yourself out for an earlymorning stroll through the walking trails at Ridge Ferry Park in Rome, Georgia and pass two grown men decked out in Braves gear, you did not just encounter two Rome Braves super fans. Or maybe you did, but there is a better chance you just passed Rome Braves field manager Kanekoa Texeira and long-time coach Bobby Moore. For the last few months, Texeira and Moore have been showing up to the office and hitting the trails first thing in the morning. Beginning just outside the clubhouse doors at AdventHealth Stadium, the trail takes the two all the way through Ridge Fer- ry Park and alongside the Oostanaula
River and looping back around to the east parking lot of the stadium.
The origin of these walks begins a few months back and is sparked by a World Champion mindset. While at Spring Training this year in North Port, Florida, Texeira joined a walk- ing club with Atlanta Braves manag- er Brian Snitker. Texeira describes it as “A couple of gentlemen who have been in the game for a long time, that have a little group who meet up and go walking from about five to six in the morning.” It is said that walk- ing is the best exercise a person can do. Health professionals all over the world recommend walking to people

of all ages due to the physical benefits walking provides. For Texeira however, the benefits go far beyond the realm of physical health. Life in the minor leagues is tough. There are a lot of long road trips, lots of early mornings, and even more late nights. From late March to late October, players and coaches alike go through one of the most grueling schedules in all of sports. Going months without seeing their actual family, coaches and teammates become like family. So naturally, you look after your family. That’s why when Texeira got to Rome prior to the 2022 season, he extended a not so optional coach Bobby Moore. “I told Bobby ‘I love you too much, I need you to live forever. So get your butt up and walk.’”. So, Moore fully committed to the plan, and got his own walking stick fully equipped with a functioning compass. “It hurt at first.” Moore said. “I wasn’t used to it. I used to come into the of- fice and just do paperwork or sit on the computer, but now I’ve got this stick and it actually helps. It’s good. It helps my stamina when I’m throwing batting practice and hitting ground balls – you know, doing my job.” Moore adds that most importantly, “I’m pleasing the manager. I want to be his best friend.” Texeira notes the importance of falling into a routine, especially amid a 132- game season. “It’s hard to fall into a routine, though. In spring training, ev- erything starts at the same time every day. You kind of fall into that routine, but then when the season starts it changes a little bit. Day games, road games, all of that.” However, as vary- ing as the minor league schedule
is, Moore and Texeira have vowed to stay true to their morning walks and the time of reflection it allows. Texeira says “This time right here, every day, 9:30. It isn’t going to change.” Moore agrees that a routine is important and finds that a morning walk is the per- fect time to reflect on the game from the night before. “It makes it easy. We get up early anyway and we’re here at nine in the morning, so we just walk and talk. Good things and bad things that happen in the game, who we’re facing, how we need to prepare, the players, all of it.” Much like the players, coaches take the game extremely personal. Coaches and managers want to put their play- ers in a position to succeed, and some- times after a rough game, a morning walk can sometimes be just what the doctor ordered. “We vent sometimes.” Moore says. “We should’ve done this, why didn’t we do this, stuff like that. We take it personal sometimes be- cause we care about the players. It makes it fun.” There have been several interesting moments during Texeira and Moore’s walks, along with different guests from week to week. Several of the Rome Braves players themselves have joined in on Texeira and Moore’s walks. Infielder Beau Philip has been one of the reoccurring guests on the morn- ing strolls. Bobby and Tex also acci- dentally found themselves at the tail end of an early morning 5K run that was taking place in the park just a few weeks back. So, while everyone is get- ting their exercise, Texeira and Moore are building relationships within their team and community.
5
Despite not having long and decorated playing careers themselves, both Tex- eira and Moore believe that they are right where they are supposed to be: Rome, Georgia. Throughout their time together on and off the field, Texeira and Moore have created bonds that will last much longer than their time in the game. Both believe that their daily walks and conversations will not only better their coaching ability but also better them as a person. Texeira believes that the relationships you build off the field translate to the suc- cess you see on the field. “Team bond- ing is a big thing in baseball now, you know? If you’ve got one bad horse that doesn’t want to mingle, you’ll separate the whole team chemistry.” With the popularity of Tex and Bobby’s walking club and the on-field success from the team, it is safe to say that the 2022
Rome Braves squad have solid rela- tionships from top to bottom, and it starts with daily walks with the man- ager.

What is your favorite place to eat in Rome, GA? Tex: I can tell you that Bobby’s favorite place is Wendy’s. Dave’s double, fries, and a coke. Bobby: With cheese. Tex: For me, I crush Jerusalem Grill. That place for some reason just gets my tastebuds going, man. Shout out to Jerusalem Grill. What is your favorite place to eat out- side of Rome? Bobby: Oh you’re gonna take me back to Cincinnati. Where I’m from, where all my family is from. Gotta go with Sky Line Chili. A lot of people don’t know about it or don’t like it, but that’s what I grew up on. Tex: For me, it’d be this place called Side Street Inn in Hawaii. Unreal Ha- waiian food. My wife knows as soon as I get home, it’s Side Street Inn time. Not gonna lie I crush it. If you could have dinner with anybody, who would it be? Bobby: It’s gotta be my family. But if I’m by myself I’d say Texi. And I’m not just saying that because he’s here. I mean it, we bond well together. Tex: For me, I’d say Bob Marley. I loved that dude since I was a kid. We share a birthday. I love reggae music, coming from Hawaii that’s kind of our choice of music. I just loved the way that dude was. Just trying to make the world a better place. I wish I could have had lunch with him. Bobby: See I didn’t know you meant famous people like that. See if you had said famous like that I would’ve went with my boy, Pete Rose. Charlie Hustle. I watched him a lot growing up as a kid and just loved the way he played the game.
Tex: I thought you were gonna say Charlie Wilson. Bobby: “Nah, I’d have to start singing if I did that. What is your favorite genre of music, Bobby? Bobby: Oh that’s a great question. Tex: Bobby is a walking Juke Box. Bobby: That’s a stumper for me, but I’d have to go with – and I know this may sound crazy- but Michael Jackson. Off The Wall and all that stuff. Great en- tertainer. I loved watching him dance and sing and do his thing. So, Michael Jackson. What is your favorite movie? Bobby: Shooter. I like Shooter, with Wahlberg. Action. Goof movie. Tex: I got too many movies. Can I say pass? I’m gonna say pass. What is your spirit animal? Bobby: Dang. I got two dogs, so I’ll go with dog. Tex: I’m gonna go with a white tiger, man. Those things are rare. Bobby: So are my dogs. What is your go-to gas station snack? Tex: Mine is beef jerky. Bobby: I’m a beef jerky guy, but what are those things called? The long stick things. With meat in them. Tex: Taquitos? Bobby: That’s it. What he said. I like those things. Is a hot dog a sandwich? Tex: I say no. A hot dog is a hot dog, a sandwich is a sandwich. Bobby: Yeah a hot dog is not a sand- wich to me. In Cincinnati we call hot dogs Coneys, and a Coney is not a sandwich.
