THE STORIES WE TELL ...

We know stories are impactful because of our history. From the time of the caveman, when stories were passed down through cave paintings, all the way to today’s modern movies, a good story captivates its audience. Stories have the ability to create a sense of belonging and forge connections to the people around us. Each of us has our own story to tell, but the real trick is how we tell it. When you desire to know someone better, telling your story helps that process. The art of telling someone your story in a compelling way gives them a chance to sympathize, empathize, and connect. Storytelling is an important part of what we do at Russell & Lazarus. It is actually a skill that many successful people possess. Storytelling is an important part of our practice in personal injury because it evokes emotions and human connections. This is crucial when it is up to us to try to persuade 12 jurors, who are essentially strangers, that our client is credible, legitimate, and worthy of compensation. Without that connection, the case simply becomes a jumble of numbers, and numbers alone will cause us to fall short of getting our clients fairly compensated. Storytelling is such an important part of our practice that we have week-long seminars and conventions devoted specifically to the art of telling our clients' stories. One of the more prominent trial lawyer colleges that does this well is headed by famed trial attorney Gerry Spence at Thunderhead Ranch, in Wyoming. Our own Fenja Klaus recently graduated from this college, where attendees spend most of their time focused on the art of storytelling, including non-verbal communication, which has come in handy during a mask wearing pandemic. Spence, who is a master storyteller, is a legend in the trial attorney community. His college will only take on attorneys who represent common people (criminal defense or personal injury victims) and you must have at least 12 jury trials under your belt to be considered. At age 91, he is still a force to be reckoned with and a great resource to listen to and learn from. It was a great opportunity for Fenja to spend three weeks of her time there learning his methods for good storytelling and the many other communication skill sets that accompany it.

What Fenja learned also solidified the fact that our lives/stories are much more than numbers and >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4
