A FAMILY HELPING FAMILIES
WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK
The Story of Schiller & Hamilton Law Firm
W hen I decided to hang up my own shingle and begin a personal injury law firm in the mid-2000s, I knew I wanted to create a law practice that was focused on helping families find relief. The firm I had helped start was disbanding because my goals were shifting away from the goals other attorneys at the firm had, and I needed to get back to what had propelled me into law. However, prior to the firm breaking up, Joel Hamilton, an errand runner at the firm, and I had developed a strong relationship. I decided to take this kid from Ohio under my wing at this South Carolina practice, and soon, we spent time together outside of work. My kids were even calling him Uncle Joel, and my wife adored him.
Having Joel as my partner gives me the peace of mind to know that I’m partnering with someone who is like m little brother and is shaping the practice I started with the very same goals and motivations that propelled me to personal injury law. Schiller & Hamilton Law Firm has been rooted in family values since the beginning, and its family has continued to prosper. As Joel, myself, and our families have grown, our bond has strengthened. I’m proud of what we have built since we connected nearly 20 years ago, and today, we have added caring lawyers and legal experts who want to make a tangible difference in the lives of their clients.
April 2019
After I left the old firm, Joel — who was only 19 at the time — called and asked if I needed a runner. The best I could offer him was a part-time job, but Joel soon became the jack-of- all-trades at the newly founded Schiller Law Firm. He would answer phones, run errands, type out letters, and do whatever else he could at this new firm. While continuing his studies throughout law school,
“HAVING JOEL AS MY PARTNER GIVES ME THE PEACE OF MIND TO KNOW THAT I’M PARTNERING WITH SOMEONE WHO IS LIKE MY LITTLE BROTHER AND IS SHAPING THE PRACTICE I STARTED WITH THE VERY SAME GOALS AND MOTIVATIONS THAT PROPELLED ME TO PERSONAL INJURY LAW.”

Joel would drive down to South Carolina to clerk for me during his breaks, and he continued to take on more responsibilities. Eventually, my practice grew and added offices, and Joel was growing up too. Upon graduating from law school, Joel was offered a job at his father’s company, but he wanted to stay in South Carolina serving his clients and helping to grow the firm. Since then, this practice has continued to expand, and our partnership has grown alongside it. Joel’s entire adulthood has been spent in partnership with this firm and me, and our passions, preferences, and goals have been in sync, unlike other firms, where egos and directional issues often seem to destroy worthwhile practices.
Joel and I have worked tirelessly together to set the perfect tone for our practice, one of diligence; understanding; and, most of all, a family helping other families during some of the worst times in their life. There’s a reason our slogan is “Don’t go it alone. At Schiller & Hamilton, we’ve got your back!” It will cost you nothing to come talk to us, but it could cost you everything if you don’t. Let our family help yours.

THE SULTAN OF SWAT! THE KING OF CRASH! THE COLOSSUS OF CLOUT! THE GREAT BAM
The Legend of Babe Ruth
On April 27, 1947, the New York Yankees hosted the first Babe Ruth Day to honor the ailing baseball star, who had terminal throat cancer. As he rose to give a speech for the 58,339 fans in the stadium, Ruth’s condition caused him to have a coughing fit. With the thunderous cheers from the stands encouraging him to continue, he lovingly spoke to the thousands of people who had followed his career from his early years as a free- spirited Baltimore school kid to the world-renowned baseball legend he became. Even legends have to start somewhere, and Ruth began his baseball career in the minor league Baltimore Orioles, where his teammates gave him the nickname “Babe.” He was soon acquired by the Boston Red Sox,
and he helped them win the World Series in 1916 and 1918. The following year, he was traded to the Yankees.
His popularity in the Big Apple allowed the Yankees to move from a shared ballpark to one of their own in the Bronx, which was aptly known as “The House That Ruth Built.” Even through the 1919 World Series gambling debacle, which cast doubt over the sport’s future, the fans’ attention was still centered on the Sultan of Swat and what he would do next. The New York Times reported that as “home runs began to scale off his bat in droves, crowds jammed ballparks in every city in which he appeared.” All those home runs resulted in his record-breaking year in 1927, when he hit 60 over-the-fence home runs in a single season.
Spring Into Safety
MOTORCYCLE SAFETY TIPS AS YOU HIT THE ROAD
There’s no shortage of cleaning during spring, and your motorcycle deserves the same treatment. While South Carolinians can enjoy motorcycle-appropriate weather nearly all year, spring is the perfect time to make sure you’re taking all the riding precautions you can. Try some of these safety tips to prepare for your best and safest warm riding season. TIME FOR A TUNE-UP Start with the basics, and take your ride in for servicing by a professional. Mechanics will check the tire pressure, oil levels, fuel lines, lights, batteries, and other functional components. Taking your bike in for an inspection can ensure you catch any possible mechanical issues early. Additionally, use shorter rides to check your breaks and clutch tension. Making these updates and catching problems before you’re on the road for long rides will keep you safer and riding longer. Refresh your knowledge on the basics of motorcycle safety and function by visiting the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s website at MSF-USA.org. PROTECT YOUR NOGGIN You and your passengers need to wear helmets — the statistics back us up. According to the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, wearing a helmet decreases your risk of head injury by 69 percent and your chance of death by 42 percent. In fact, in 2016, about 80 percent of those who died in motorcycle accidents in South Carolina were not wearing a helmet. The state requires those over 21 years old to wear a helmet, so consider if your cranium coverage is enough this spring. Your helmet should feel snug, but the longer you wear a helmet, the looser it gets. You can measure a helmet’s effectiveness with two fingers. Try to slip them between your eyebrow and the helmet, and if your fingers slide in easily, you need a smaller helmet. Despite all the safety measures you take, accidents still happen. If you have ever sustained a hernia, you know just how painful the condition can be. Typically, hernias occur when a patient’s intestine pokes through a thin part of their abdominal wall, causing pain, swelling, and infections, but a hernia can also occur when any organ pops out of its lining. Commonly, surgeons have used hernia mesh to patch the protrusion and prevent further damage. This mesh can be implanted either temporarily and break down when it’s no longer needed, or it can be placed in the body permanently. Unfortunately, according to the FDA, a large number of the 1 million hernia repair surgeries each year result in more pain, grief, and expenses for patients. In fact, hernia mesh has failed for 30 percent of patients who have undergone the surgery. Those who have received the permanent mesh may experience the synthetic or natural fibers of the mesh coming loose, while the temporary mesh has dissolved too quickly for other patients. This results in longer hospital stays, additional costly procedures, and more suffering for patients and their loved ones. Furthermore, because of their conditions, some patients are unable to work, leaving their families, lives, and bank accounts in a lurch. Some companies have recalled their mesh products after numerous complaints to the FDA, and there is hope for the patients who have faced complications after hernia mesh surgeries. Multimillion-dollar settlements have been doled out to deserving patients and their families as more companies are facing the consequences of their negligence. If you or a loved one has undergone hernia mesh surgery since and have suffered from any of the following side effects, you may be entitled to compensation. • Chronic pain at the surgical site or in your limbs • Infection • Bowel obstruction • Adhesions • Mesh failure or shifting • Inflammation or fluid build-up under the skin • Additional hernias or surgeries • Fistulae or tunnels that connect otherwise separated parts of the body Lawsuits are already underway, so don’t miss your opportunity to get the compensation you deserve. INO!
While his home run record was eventually broken in 1961, the continued celebration of Babe Ruth Day keeps his love for the game and unmatched
ability alive. To quote the classic baseball film “The Sandlot,” “Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.” In the Great Bambino’s case, the legend of his baseball career has survived for over a century and will continue to do so for decades to come.

Books to Engage the Whole Family
Books to Engage the Whole Family WORLDS WITHIN PAGES
Learning to read opens up a world of possibilities. When your child walks through the back of the wardrobe into Narnia with Lucy Pevensie or rides with Harry Potter on the train to Hogwarts, they connect to something beyond their own experiences. In the U.S., April 23 is World Book Day, and the date commemorates the deaths of legendary authors Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Garcilaso de la Vega, as well as the birth of author Vladimir Nabokov. World Book Day is the perfect time to sit down with your family and let yourself be transported to new worlds. So, here are three great stories to help you take young readers on brand-new adventures.

For the Middle Schooler: ‘The Night Diary’
12-year-old Nisha navigates her world after the partition of India creates the new country of Pakistan and her family is forced to leave their home. Her mother may be gone, but Nisha finds solace in writing nightly letters to her in her diary as she discovers what the future holds. Based on author Veera Hiranandani’s memories of her own family, this moving tale lets readers experience life through someone else’s eyes. While some might not think of comics as proper reading, Penelope Bagieu’s graphic novel forces reconsideration. Her clever, colorful artwork and engaging narrative take the reader through the biographies of 30 women, from Bette Davis and Mae Jemison to lesser-known but equally intriguing ladies like Giorgina Reid. All in all, this book provides a great way to get kids excited about history in an entertaining form. For Teens: ‘Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World’
For the Elementary Reader: ‘Song of the Wild: A First Book of Animals’
“Song of the Wild” makes a great read-aloud book for beginner readers because they can get lost in the beautiful artwork while you read the text. Written in prose and rhyming poems, this book showcases sprawling landscapes — savannahs, jungles, and oceans — and features the wildlife living there. It’s worth a read simply to appreciate the colorful depictions of each animal. This book
