The Capital Development team within Estates and Facilities are responsible for the masterplanning and development of all campuses forming the QMUL estate. The team manage a large capital programme from inception to completion, delivering projects on budget, on programme and to a high standard of quality. The improvement in facilities supports academic research and enhances the student experience.

The role of Senior Project Manager

The Capital Projects team are currently delivering a substantial Capital building programme including;

Multi-million pound refurbishments to the School of Engineering and School of Mathematics Buildings at the Mile End Campus, the Abernethy Building at the Whitechapel Campus, as well as various ongoing legacy intervention schemes, rolling residential refurbishments and Long Term Maintenance projects. We have recently completed construction of the Neuron Pod Installation (see photo below) located at the Blizard Institute, Whitechapel Campus. Design is underway for a new building for the School of Business Management at the Mile End Campus and we are also engaged in proposals for a major refurbishment of the John Vance Science Centre at the Charterhouse Square Campus.

We are seeking a Senior Project Manager to join the Capital Development team and play a leading role in the delivery of a range of major projects that emanate from the capital development programme.

You will initially work as the lead on a major student accommodation scheme that will see the development of several hundred new bedspaces on the Mile End campus.

It is also anticipated that you will deliver other student accommodation redevelopment projects and a range of projects to improve commercial facilities and physical improvements to facilities to improve student and staff experience.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of leading large scale refurbishment and new build projects in a lead project manager role.

We are seeking an individual with experience of managing projects with comparable characteristics to the ones found at QMUL, with prior experience of leading the delivery of student accommodation development projects being very important.

We are expecting candidates to have a proven track record and professional background in the development and construction industry in a project management role.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to lead one of the largest student accommodation projects in the London market in a client side project management role.

Job Context

Capital Projects are responsible for the Master Planning and Development of all campuses forming the Queen Mary University of London estate. The team manage a large capital programme from inception to completion, delivering projects on budget, on programme and to a high standard of quality. The improvement in facilities supports academic research and enhances the student experience.

Job Purpose

Accountable to and working closely with the Head of Capital Development and Projects, the Senior Project Manager is responsible for the successful implementation for a portfolio of diverse projects including major construction, engineering and related projects at the University. This includes Development (both new build and refurbishment) Maintenance and Infrastructure. The post holder will act as the QMUL client and deliver first class projects, forming the necessary links between all involved parties. The post holder will ensure effective and efficient programme management from project inception to completion, meeting or exceeding briefs, budget control and delivery of quality products.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

1. To deliver projects to the highest quality and standards, managing the project delivery process from inception through to occupancy.

2. To implement effective programme and project management processes.

3. To lead, motivate and manage project teams, including occupiers and external advisors, in delivering first class projects.

4. To liaise with senior management, project board members and the project teams to ensure that their respective needs are fully identified and input into the briefing and design process to ensure that buildings are appraised for lifecycle management to minimise the ongoing costs and liabilities.

5. To ensure that regular customer surveys are undertaken as a performance improvement tool.

6. Liaison with other sections within Estates and Facilities and elsewhere in the University in order to ensure seamless, first class customer service.

7. To manage Health and Safety issues to ensure compliance with statutory requirements and best practice, working closely with the Capital Projects Health and Safety Manager.

8. To procure the necessary statutory and University approvals and consents.

9. To provide timely and accurate reporting on progress, quality and budget/cash flow, providing monthly summary reports, together with the development and ongoing management of project risk registers.

10. To carry out fully inclusive post project evaluations ensuring future procurement processes are informed by shared past contract experiences.

11. To thoroughly understand, and stay abreast of, project management methodologies.
