CWGO CAREER WOMEN’S GOLF ORGANIZATION On August 9, CWGO hosted our Member-Junior tournament to support our golfing community at ANCC. The junior golfers in our 9 team scramble event were truly inspiring – not only do they have admirable golf skills but each was a joy to spend the evening with. The winning team of Tina Gwilliam, David Stanford and Britt-Marie Nordquist posted a score of 30 for 9 holes with no handicap applied. Second place was not far behind with a 32, posted by Cindy Hillburn, Michael Stanford and Trevor Pickard. Third place went to Linda Colon, Gabriel Chun, Will Twomey and Katelynn Wa- clawski. A fantastic time was had by all. September golfing opportunities include the CWGO Championship Final and Aspiring Champion’s Tournament on September 23, Saturday play at Arlington on the 9th and 16th and Saturday play at Fairfax on the 30th. Our Interclub team continues to trump our competition. On August 20 we beat Trump National, with our A teams tying and the B Teams won 18.5 to 17.5.

Swimming at ANCC

In mid-1930, with golf and tennis fully in play at the Army Navy and Marine Corps Country Club, the Board of Governors took action to make good on a six year old pledge to build a swimming pool for the members. However, funding for the project was another issue. The estimated cost for a modest pool facility was $8,000, an amount the Planning Committee did not find realistic. After considerable deliberation, the Board approved an initiative allowing members to subscribe to the Pool Project; $10 for resident members and $3 for non-residents. By September 1930, the subscriptions had garnered sufficient funds to start construction, planning on a 1931 season opening. The pool opened on schedule and that first season was a total success, giving $1,000 back to the Club. The next few years saw increasing levels of use and financial success to the point that in 1934 funding for the Swimming Committee was incorporated into the Club’s formal budget. A new pool adjacent to the original was opened in June 1934 and the two pools provided enjoyable service through the war years and into the early 1950s. For more information on the history of Swimming at ANCC and the ANCC Foundation’s efforts to publicize and memorialize this and all facets of the Club’s history, please click here .
