SYMPTOMS OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a disruption in the normal function of the brain as a result of head trauma. A blow, bump, or jolt to the head, or a penetrating head injury, often causes TBI-related injuries. Car accidents, falls, and severe sports injuries account for most traumatic brain injuries. However, any instance that involves a head injury has the potential to cause a traumatic brain injury. TBI symptoms vary depending on the severity of the injury. There are TBI signs you’ll notice immediately, while other long- term symptoms can go unnoticed for months. If your loved one recently sustained a TBI, watch out for these symptoms. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms Also known as concussions, mild traumatic brain injuries may affect your brain temporarily. These symptoms may appear immediately or a week after a traumatic event like a car accident. According to the Mayo Clinic, they can cause the following symptoms in children and adults: • Nausea • Fatigue • Dizziness or loss of balance • Blurred vision, ringing in the ears, a bad taste in the mouth, or changes in smell • Sensitivity to light or sound • Loss of consciousness for a few seconds to a few minutes • Memory or concentration problems
• Mood changes • Feeling depressed or anxious • Sleep difficulties
Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms Serious traumatic brain injuries often cause long-term
complications or death. This brain trauma may result in bleeding, bruising, torn tissues, or other physical damage to the brain. When the brain undergoes severe damage, the effects are often life-altering. Sometimes, the victim becomes a different person. TBI patients may experience debilitating physical and emotional symptoms, including:
• Memory loss • Chronic anxiety and/or depression • Persistent headaches • Seizures • Fatigue • Balance or coordination problems If your loved one is showing any of the above symptoms after a head injury, seek medical treatment immediately. Visit our website at ShannonLawGroup.com to learn more about TBIs and your rights.

BICYCLING IN THE CITY CAN BE HAZARDOUS
Here’s What You Need to Know
Riding your bike is a great way to exercise and see the sights in Chicago and its suburbs, but it can be dangerous. You have to share the streets and sidewalks with cars, trucks, and pedestrians. Every time a bicyclist starts pedaling, they’re at risk of being hit by a vehicle, regardless of what measures they take to prevent an accident. In 2018 alone, more than 2,500 bicyclists were injured in Illinois crashes. These bike crashes are more likely to occur in urban areas. Bicyclists are often hit by drivers who don’t see them until it’s too late. What’s more, bicyclists suffer more permanent and life-altering injuries on average when they’re in an accident. In fact, nearly 14% of Illinois bicycle accidents in 2018 resulted in permanent injuries — compared to just 3.5% of the total crashes that year.
Bicycle accident lawsuits are complicated, and they shouldn’t be handled without a lawyer if you suffered a serious injury. When you hire a law firm like Shannon Law Group, you’re delegating the stress of handling your case to us. That way, you can focus on getting better. We’re personal injury attorneys. We handle cases like yours every day. Our lawyers know how to talk to insurance adjusters and defense attorneys. We’re skilled at investigating these types of cases, assessing damages, and negotiating with the other side.
If you’d like to learn more about your rights after a bicycle accident, I’m giving away free copies of my book, “Transportation Law, Rights, & Injuries.” This book details everything you need to know about pursuing a serious injury lawsuit in Illinois. Text “TRANSPORTATION” to 312-847-2428 to request your free copy.
If you’re involved in a bike crash, here’s what you should do.
1. Seek medical treatment. Your health and safety are your most important concern.

2. Contact an experienced bicycle accident lawyer ASAP.

ANSWERING YOUR WORKERS’ COMPENSATION FAQS
Q: What is workers’ compensation, and how does it work in Illinois? Workers’ compensation is a type of insurance that your employer is legally required to pay under Illinois law. Coverage starts on your first day of work, whether you’re full-time or part-time. You are also covered if you were hired in Illinois and were injured working in another state. Workers’ compensation is a “no-fault” system. You can receive many benefits, including full payment of your medical bills. It does not matter whether you or your employer caused your injury. In exchange for a guarantee of these basic benefits, you cannot sue your employer for compensation for your injuries. Instead, you can file a workers’ compensation claim. There is an exception to the rule: Federal workers and city of Chicago employees, including police officers and firefighters, are not eligible for workers’ compensation benefits under the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act.
Q: What types of injuries are covered under the Illinois workers’ compensation act? Many work-related injuries and illnesses are covered under the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act. The law assumes that your injury “arose out of and in course of the employment and is causally limited to the work activity.” The burden of proof shifts to your employer to prove that your work injury or illness was not caused by work activity or exposure. Examples of work injuries include broken bones, herniated discs, heart attacks, or losing a finger. Certain occupations can also put employees at risk for developing illnesses, such as cancer or black lung disease. Additionally, preexisting conditions are covered if they have been aggravated by work activity. Railroad workers and maritime workers must file a claim under the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA) and the Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act, respectively.
If you or someone you love has been hurt on the job, we recommend that you contact an experienced workers’ compensation lawyer as soon as possible to protect your rights. Call us at 312-578-9501 any time to speak with one of our attorneys.
Q: Can my boss fire me for filing a workers’ compensation claim?
No. You are protected under the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Act from your employer retaliating against you for filing a workers’ compensation claim.
