An Update from Our Family to Yours

For the first 10 years of clerking and my law practice, I represented insurance companies and large corporations. When I started to represent people in 1996, Michelle and I had two kids, a 1-year-old, Emma, and a newborn, Clare. Our kids have grown up alongside my law practice. When we opened Shannon Law Group 15 years ago, we started the firm as a family-centered business. My law practice seemed more personal. I really got to know our clients and their families. When I first started sending a monthly newsletter over five years ago, I shared family updates with our clients, just as they shared their lives with me. Here’s the update on the family.

we were attending his Benet Academy High School soccer matches and swim meets. We are so proud of all his work at Marquette, and we look forward to his next adventures. Nora graduated from St. Francis High School. She will attend Marquette in the fall. Michelle and I are going to miss watching Nora’s tennis matches. Nora’s grace and demeaner on the court made us so proud. She was the family’s first tennis player. We look forward to her college adventure as she follows the siblings north to Milwaukee. Emma lives in Naperville with her husband Tom and teaches English at St. Viator High School. Clare resides in De Pere, Wisconsin. This will be her fifth year working for Kohl’s Corporation. Kate is in her third year of medical school at Saint Louis

The highlights for May are the graduations. Our son, Will, graduated from Marquette this year. It seems like yesterday

University. We were lucky to celebrate Mother’s Day with her. Our youngest, Johnny, will finish up at our parish school, St. Joan of Arc, next year. Just like most of you, after God, our main emphasis is on family. We understand when we represent you, we represent your family as well. We are honored to have the privilege to represent you and your family.

Gratefully yours,

– Joe Shannon

5 TOP SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVERS AND MOTORCYCLE RIDERS

5 Tips for Riders 1. Be visible. Wear bright- colored clothing and protective gear. 2. Always gear up for every

Millions of Americans enjoy riding their motorcycles on our roads and highways. It’s another way to get around and explore our diverse nation. But most of the time, motorcyclists aren’t sharing the road with fellow bikers — they’re sharing it with passenger cars, pickup trucks, and commercial vehicles. When involved in accidents, bikers are often left with serious and sometimes fatal injuries. Since May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, here are five tips from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation for drivers as well as motorcycle riders to stay safe and prevent accidents. 5 Tips for Drivers 1. Take your time and watch for motorcycles. Be sure to check your blind spots before changing lanes and listen for motorcycles near you. 2. Assume motorcyclists are closer than they look. Use extra precaution at night or during a storm. 3. Keep a safe distance between you and a motorcyclist. 4. Don’t assume a motorcyclist is changing lanes if you see them moving. 5. Don’t follow a motorcycle too closely.

ride. Some states (like Illinois) don’t require you to wear a helmet while riding your bike, but it’s highly recommended. Well-fitting helmets save lives.

3. When in doubt, drive

defensively. Err on the side of caution and assume that most

drivers don’t see you. Be prepared to brake or change lanes if needed. Of course, there’s only so much you can do, but it’s best to anticipate other drivers’ movements when possible. 4. Inspect your bike before every ride. Make sure everything’s in working order before hitting the road. 5. Pay attention to your surroundings.

WHAT SIRVA TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE?

• Steroid shots: A steroid injection may be prescribed in order to help reduce the amount of inflammation in the shoulder as well as preserve the joint functions and structures. • Pain medication: While some people will use over-the-counter medications such as Advil or Tylenol to alleviate their pain, others may need a pain prescription medication. • Surgery: In extremely rare cases, surgery may be recommended to help fix any ligaments or tendons damaged by inflammation.

Each year, many people in the United States will get vaccinated. A small percentage will experience severe shoulder pain that doesn’t go away. These folks will have trouble lifting their arm and doing everyday tasks. These symptoms are typical signs of SIRVA, or a shoulder injury related to vaccine administration. SIRVA is a rare condition that happens when a vaccine is administered improperly in the shoulder. Medical providers are taught to administer a vaccine in a certain location in the shoulder muscle. The vaccine’s needle also must be inserted with a specific depth. Should the administrator give the vaccine either too high or deep into the shoulder, they can cause damage to the tendons, ligaments, and/or bursa (a fluid-filled sac underneath the shoulder cap). When this happens, the shoulder becomes inflamed and painful.

SIRVA isn’t necessarily a single diagnosis. However, it’s an umbrella term to help describe that a shoulder injury was caused by a vaccine. SIRVA-related diagnoses include frozen shoulder syndrome, shoulder tendinitis, rotator cuff injury, shoulder impingement syndrome, and shoulder bursitis. A doctor may order several tests to determine which condition the patient has. These tests can include a physical exam, an MRI, or an ultrasound. Depending on the severity of the shoulder injury, there’s an array of treatment options often recommended, including: • Physical therapy: Physical therapy is usually the first step in treating SIRVA. It helps rehabilitate the loss of range of motion that typically occurs with the condition.
