as restore range of motion and strength. Completing a course of physical therapy will allow you to recover fully and prevent future episodes of pain. As we get older, we all develop some form of arthritis or degenerative disc disease in our spine. This normal aging process can sometimes lead to increased neck pain and stiffness. If advanced enough, degenerative disc disease can cause arm pain and numbness, a condition known as cervical radiculopathy. Physical therapy can reduce pain associated with arthritis and degenerative disc disease by improving postural alignment, restoring pain free range of motion, and providing education on ways to reduce stress on the neck and upper back. Appropriate therapy can even eliminate arm pain associated with cervical radiculopathy. Headaches are another condition that people may not associate with neck pain. Cervicogenic headache is pain in the head which is referred from your neck joints. Cervicogenic headaches are very common and often start in the back of the head and radiate to the front, but they can also be isolated to the temples or forehead. Cervicogenic headaches often improve quickly with manual therapy, corrective exercise and posture education. Even people with chronic headaches can get relief within a few physical therapy sessions. These are just some of the frequent causes of neck pain. It is important that you never assume that your neck pain is being caused by one or another of these issues, and that you instead always work with a licensed and experienced physical therapist to determine the precise cause of your pain and discomfort. If you or a loved one suffers from neck pain, you still have options. Call TODAY to schedule an evaluation with Shoreline Physical Therapy

It is incredible to realize how common neck pain is — especially among American adults! More than two-thirds of U.S. adults will develop neck pain at least once in their life, and the reasons for the neck pain are as varied as the population of the nation itself. Injury, strain, poor posturing and even stress can cause significant pain in the neck and upper back. If not treated, an episode of neck pain can lead to chronic pain, it is even possible for headaches to develop as a result of regular neck pain. There are a lot of different ways that you can relieve neck pain, but the best treatment for your personal needs depends entirely on the type of injury that you’ve experienced. Here is a quick breakdown of some common causes of neck pain: The most common cause of mechanical neck pain is cervical derangement syndrome. In this case, pain often begins slowly without incident. You may find your neck to feel tight and that gradually progresses to neck pain and loss of mobility with looking up or turning your head. Derangement syndrome can also occur rapidly by sleeping in the wrong position or turning your head awkwardly (kink in the neck). Pain from derangement can radiate into your head, upper back and down the arm. The good news is that, with appropriate mechanical assessment and application of self treatment, a physical therapist can help rapidly reduce the pain from derangement. Other times, neck pain can occur after an injury, such as a car accident, a slip and fall accident, or an athletic injury. In case of a traumatic injury, x-rays are important to rule out a spinal fracture or dislocation. If x-rays are negative the cause of pain is usually a soft tissue strain. Physical therapy should start immediately to reduce pain and inflammation as well

There is one more factor that often is not spoken about, but it’s a frequent cause of neck pain and discomfort: sleeping issues. Sometimes, sleeping in a certain position or sleeping on a mattress or pillow that is too soft or too hard will lead to neck pain. Oftentimes, this pain will appear to be chronic, as the sleeping issue is likely something that you experience day after day, causing the pain to return regularly. It may be helpful to rule out sleeping concerns as a reason behind your neck pain by assessing your sleeping conditions and making any changes that you think may be necessary. Adjust how many pillows you sleep on, the position you sleep in or even your mattress!
