Find Time
for Family This Summer
With the summer here, many of our young patients will be headed to camp or starting their first summer jobs. I did both of those things in my youth, starting with sleep-away camp in North Carolina when I was about 10 years old. I still remember sleeping in the cabins with all the other kids. The first week of the first summer, I was pretty scared, but after that, I had a blast. I loved all the outdoor activities, and who can forget the anticipation of waiting for care packages? The month or so I spent at camp was always one I enjoyed, and one I remember well to this day. When I got a little older, I stopped going to summer camp and entered the workforce instead. I still remember my first “real job,” working at a yogurt store called Hooked on
Yogurt. Although I worked at that job during the school year as well, I still remember hot summer afternoons serving up frozen yogurt and learning some valuable lessons along the way. I already knew how to show up on time and work hard, but the responsibility of opening or closing the shop was a good one to have. Plus, I’m still a real whiz at self-serve yogurt and ice cream stations. It’s a skill set my kids appreciate. Lots of kids had summer jobs like mine, but I was an industrious youth long before I started my own dental practice. Summers were the time for my entrepreneurial spirit to shine. Not too many 16-year-olds have a business partner, but I had a good buddy who used to help me run a yard service cutting lawns. We also sold
Krispy Kreme donuts in the early morning. We’d call up the main bakery the night before and order 100 or 200 dozen donuts. Then we’d get up at 4:30, drive out to the bakery, and pile all those donuts into a car. We’d hit the busiest intersections in town during the morning commute, walking between cars at red lights and selling donuts. We’d tack on a buck or two to each box, and by 10:30 we’d be out of donuts and a couple hundred bucks richer — not bad for a couple kids! I’ve taken that drive and passion and turned it into a real way of life here at my own business. I hope this newsletter finds you well, and I hope you have a great end to your summer. – Dr. Howard Shullman

Keep Your Child’s Mind Active With This Fun Summer Experiment! Grow Crystals With Your Kids
A mentally sedentary summer can cause your child’s learning to stagnate and backslide, erasing the equivalent of as much as two months of in-school learning. But you can have fun with your kid this summer and help them learn at the same time. Try this project from sciencebob.com, which demonstrates how geodes are formed and gives a primer on the science of crystals. The results are stunning! All you need are some clean eggshells, water, several different soluble materials (salt, sugar, baking soda, borax, cream of tartar), coffee cups, spoons, food coloring, and egg cartons.
First, crack the eggs as close to the narrow end as possible. Then, clean the eggshells in hot water, which allows you to pull the skin out of the inside. Place the shells in an egg carton lined with wax paper to hold them upright. Boil the water and pour half a cup into each coffee mug, followed by ¼ cup of one of the soluble materials, stirring until it dissolves. Keep adding the solid slowly until the water is supersaturated — this simply means that the water has absorbed all it can and any additional solid won’t dissolve. Then, add food coloring to the solutions. See what creative color combinations your child can come up with.
Carefully pour the solution into an eggshell, filling it as full as you can without the solution overflowing or the egg tipping over. As the water evaporates (be patient!) crystals will begin to form inside the eggshells. But how? As the water is heated, it expands, allowing more space for the dissolved solution. When it cools and evaporates, that space goes away, and the solids are forced to become solid again. See, science is fun and educational! Check out further science experiments on sciencebob. com, sciencekids.co.nz, or redtri.com/classic- science-experiments!

The Honest 'Tooth'
Real Facts About Braces
it challenging to brush properly and result in additional cavities or even gum disease. Myth: Braces Will Set Off Metal Detectors or Get Me Struck by Lightning Fact: Braces are made from titanium and other lightweight metals that metal detectors don’t react to. Likewise, having a mouthful of braces doesn't mean you have to go inside when a thunderstorm rolls in. People with braces aren’t more likely to get struck by lightning. According to National Geographic, those odds in any given year stay the same at 1 to 700,000. Even further, braces aren’t going to rust or interfere with radio waves.

There’s a lot of misinformation surrounding braces that make them out to be a real pain, even outside of the mouth. Let’s rescue the reputation of braces by debunking some of these longstanding myths. Myth: Only Kids and Teens Need Braces Fact: Anyone can benefit from braces, regardless of age. The World’s Happiest Vacations

Visit the Happiest Places in the World — It’s Contagious DESTINATION: HAPPY PEOPLE
The Happiest States in the U.S. If we were to tell you that Hawaii is the happiest state in the country, you probably wouldn’t be surprised. And sure enough, Hawaii ranked first in overall happiness for the sixth consecutive year. The sunny beaches, rich culture, and perfect weather give tourists a taste of paradise that the natives enjoy all year long. Next in line is a state that has little in common with the Aloha State. Alaska came in second place for the third consecutive year. With eight national parks, including Denali, Glacier Bay, and Gates of the Arctic, Alaska’s 663,000 square miles are filled to the brim with the wonders of nature.
The Happiest Country in the World Denmark has long been the standard-bearer in this category, but this year it relinquished the title to its Scandinavian sister. Norway is home to some of the most breathtaking vistas on Earth, like the world-famous Geirangerfjord and Nærøfjord. For the city wanderer, you’ll find choice seaside restaurants and walkable streets in towns like Bergen, the country’s second-largest city, which sports rainbow architecture and a 15th-century waterfront. Knowing the heart of a destination begins and ends with its people. Tack on beautiful scenery and daydream-worthy activities, and you just found yourself the perfect vacation.
Visit a hustling, bustling tourist trap and what do you get? Crowds of competitive travelers and a local populace that is sick to death of them. Visit a place with happy people, and you get good service, friendly faces, and you’ll learn firsthand what Harvard researchers affirmed in a 2012 study: Happiness is contagious. Luckily for the average traveler, the places that topped a nationwide Gallup poll and the United Nations’ annual World Happiness Report have plenty to offer in addition to cheerful locals.
