A Hometown Doctor With a Passion for Helping Others MEET DR. GARRISON! Hi, everyone! Normally, I like to fill this cover letter space with fun facts and interesting pieces of history, but this month, I want to introduce you to a very special member of our audiology team. Dr. Neil Garrison joined our sister clinic, East Tennessee Audiology, this past July, and his story exemplifies the passion we have for helping our patients. Check it out below! I’ve always known I wanted a career where I could help people, and for the longest time, I thought I’d become a special education teacher. But as the child of a middle school principal, I saw how hard my mom worked every day and how difficult it still was to support a family on a teacher’s salary. I decided to explore other options to see how I could help others while also ensuring I could care for my family. That’s how I found audiology, a career I loved and could still support my future with. I could help people navigate a world that felt overwhelming — a world where they couldn’t hear. What I didn’t anticipate was just how much I would love this field. I find that building relationships with our patients is one of the best aspects of what we do. We hear about their lives, learn about their families, and understand their goals. We experience life right alongside them; our goal is to just make sure they can hear all of it. Commonly, when someone is hearing-impaired, they have lived that way for so long that they don’t know a world that’s different. They don’t know what notes they may be missing in their favorite music or the subtle sounds of nature around them. As they acclimate to an increasingly silent world, they begin to withdraw — often without even realizing it. Our goal is to not only help them hear again but also to retrain their brains to pick up on their soft or previously difficult-to-hear noises. We want to bring them back to life again! There’s an adjustment period that comes with treating hearing loss, and as we get to know our patients, we get to join them on that journey. I still get just as much joy out of watching that process unfold with my patients as I did when I saw it happen with my first patient. It’s the best part of the job. —Brett Parish

• 1 WWW. SMOKYMTNHEARING.COM I’m honored to live a life with many hobbies and a fulfilling job, and you’re part of that! Thank you for welcoming me to the team, and I cannot wait to help you and your loved ones. —Dr. Neil Garrison As a lifelong Tennessean, I was proud to join an audiology team right here in my home state. I’m a graduate of Rhea County High School in Evensville, Tennessee, and I’m a huge Tennessee football fan. (Go, Vols!) When it’s warm, I love getting outside and enjoying the lake. In the winters, I try to go skiing or snowboarding. I also enjoy the time I spend with my niece and my nephew! I’ve been with East Tennessee Audiology for just over seven months now, and I am honored to join this network of committed and knowledgeable practices. I clicked with Brett immediately, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know the rest of the team, too. As I continue in the work I do here at the clinic, I can’t wait to watch our influence grow. I want to get out into the community and spread awareness about treatment for hearing loss. If you’re our patient, you may understand just how important treating hearing loss can be, but there are many others who don’t. It’s important to our team that we reach those patients living in a silent world.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE ‘DERMATOLOGIST APPROVED’?

If you have aging or sensitive skin, you probably live by the term “dermatologist approved” when you’re searching for the best skin products. However, have you ever stopped to wonder what that term actually means and what it takes to even become “dermatologist approved”? How strict are the regulations on the many products you use on a daily basis? The truth is that there are currently no legal restrictions on what can be “dermatologist approved” except that it should be approved by a dermatologist. It doesn’t even matter if they test the product once or a hundred times — the product can get the label slapped on as long as it was approved. Because of this lack of regulation, the testing dermatologist may not consider the health implications of ingredients in any given product. However, certain ingredients can have serious long-term effects on your health and skin, such as parabens (may cause endocrine/hormone disruption), retinol (linked to tumor growth and DNA damage), and hydroquinone (potentially cancerous and toxic for your organs). And if you think any products labeled as “hypoallergenic” are any safer, you’d be wrong. The Food and Drug Administration’s website clearly states: “There are no Federal standards or definitions that govern the use of the term ‘hypoallergenic.’” However, that’s not to say all brands that work with dermatologists are malicious liars. Some brands do hold themselves accountable to their claims of professional approval. For example, many CeraVe products are developed with dermatologists and are approved by associations like the National Eczema Association. Ultimately, talk to a dermatologist you trust. They should have a good sense of what your skin needs, what’s best for your long-term health, and what products actually work. Skin care marketing thrives off the fantasy of “fixing” your skin problems instantly, and, sadly, there’s a lot of room to stretch the truth. Make sure to do your research before deciding to buy!

The show follows Bourdain as he travels and discovers little-known places in order to celebrate diverse cultures by exploring their food and dining rituals. ‘Gordon Ramsey: Uncharted’ Want something a little more recent? action became automatic was 66 days! Don’t be too hard on yourself if you miss a day, but know that sticking to a new habit is serious work, so starting small might help you out. Another important aspect of forming new daily habits is rewarding yourself. Bad habits, like smoking, have an inherent reward. However, healthy habits can have rewards too! Try consuming a bit of dark chocolate after a workout or treating yourself to a fresh beverage or relaxing to a podcast after tackling an important task. Find ways to reward yourself, and you’ll be more likely to stick to your new habit. Certain daily resolutions don’t have to be related to exercise or diet to majorly improve your life. For example, having a gratitude journal might boost your long-term happiness by 10% and improve your blood pressure. Don’t hesitate to improve your quality of life! Just start small, and you’ll be amazed by how far you’ll go.

Luckily, sticking with these habits might be as easy as making daily resolutions to complement your yearly goals. B.J. Fogg, a Stanford University professor and author of “Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything,” notes that tiny habits can make a new habit easy to implement into your daily ritual. For example, taking a short daily walk could lead to an exercise habit, or keeping an apple in your bag every day could encourage healthier snacking. It’s important that you stick with it because habits take a long time to create. One study published by the European Journal of Social Psychology asked people about a simple habit they wanted to form, like drinking water at lunch or taking a walk before dinner. They found that the average amount of time it took before the
