COMPANY HISTORY:
1961 For the next 50 years Pulsometer maintained its reputation for products of exceptionally high quality and reliability. Then, in 1961, Pulsometer Engineering joined the Booker McConnell Group along with another pump company, Sigmund Pumps of Gateshead. This combination created one of the largest pump companies in Europe, which became known as Sigmund Pulsometer Pumps, or SPP for short. 1986 After a number of changes in subsequent years, SPP Pumps acquired Henry Sykes plc in 1986. This acquisition further expanded the product range with the addition of vacuum assisted self-priming pumps. It was around this time that SPP Pumps moved it’s manufacturing site from Reading to a more modern facility in Coleford, in the West of England, where it is today. A signicant investment was made in machine tools and buildings to create a state of the art manufacturing facility. The facility doubled in size and was opened in November 1987 by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal. 1988 With never a dull moment in SPP Pumps‘ history, 1988 saw a takeover with the Braithewaite Group. This was followed with SPP Pumps being acquired by the TBG group in 1989 and the subsequent incorporation into Sterling Fluid Systems. 2002 PRESENT In 2002, SPP Pumps separated from the Sterling Fluid Systems Group and in 2003 were taken over by their current parent company, Kirloskar Brothers Limited (KBL). With the investment and knowledge passed down by KBL, twinned with the experience and expertise of all members of the workforce, SPP Pumps continue to go from strength to strength. SPP Pumps is now a truly global company with main R&D, manufacturing and test facilities centrally located in the UK and local sites in the United States, India, France, South Africa, Singapore, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. FUTURE With a heritage to be proud of and extensive application experience and engineering skills, SPP Pumps will continue to maintain its reputation for quality and value ensuring that all market and customer needs are met.
1875 SPP was founded in 1875 when a British Engineer bought the patent rights of the Pulsometer Pump from an American, Thomas Hall. From this deal came the birth of the Company as it is known today. 1878 The story continues when, in 1878, a new company was formed “The Pulsometer Engineering Company Ltd”. The pump range was continually expanded and it was as a pump manufacturer that the Company became best known. With this increase in product range and trade all over the world, a larger factory was found and set up in Battersea, London. 1901 In 1901, the Company moved from London to new premises at a site in Reading, UK. By now Pulsometer was a name well established and respected across the world as a leading manufacturer of pump equipment.

MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING CAPABILITIES
SPP Pumps distinguishes its product split between pre-engineered standard products and fully customised equipment engineered and packaged to order. The extensive manufacturing and testing capabilities reect this wide and diverse product range. To ensure ecient use of production resources, an MRPII manufacturing planning system is utilised. Assembly areas are segregated into the main product groups: standard pumps, industrial re pumps, contractors pumps and engineered products. The machine shop is planned in cell layout with individual cells specialising in types, or ranges of components. CNC machines are linked by a DNC system allowing programming to be carried out on the machine or oine. A water wash spray booth is available for a variety of paint nishes to be applied. Additionally, special chemical coatings can be applied to pump internal surfaces for corrosion/ erosion protection, or for enhanced performance. Products then go through a nal inspection and examination: nameplates, notices, guards and manuals will be added, before a nal quality check prior to the equipment being despatched. Technicians and assembly sta can move between areas to maintain exibility. Lean manufacturing principles also ensure that SPP Pumps are always focused on continuous improvement to support their ‘Right First Time’ philosophy. Customers are always welcome to visit the facility, either during manufacturing or when equipment is on test. TEST FACILITY Testing, including witness testing, of all SPP Pumps’ range of pumps is performed at SPP Pumps’ own extensive in-house test facility. The main test area has a 1.4 million litre test tank with a depth of 6 metres. It can test at pressures up to 50 bar, ows up to 2000 l/s and powers up to 800kW at 6.6kV, 400kW at 415V and 400kW at 60Hz. Generators can be used for higher powers or voltages.
