AWELL-EARNED BREAK Looking Forward to Our Summer Travels

For my husband and I, the Fourth of July is almost always a day spent on the water. During the summer, we take every opportunity we can to get out on the boat. One of our favorite pastimes is floating

around water, boating, and various activities. Traverse City, as I’m sure you can guess, is more geared to the latter, but I’m sure it’ll be a blast for both of us. One of the locations I’m most excited to see is the famous Mackinac Island. We’re thinking we’ll spend a day eating some fresh seafood and take the ferry over to the island for a daytrip. I’m sure there will be some delicious fare to check out there, and I’m thrilled to get the chance to explore. But boating isn’t all that we’re excited about this July. At the end of the month, we’re finally taking a trip to Traverse City, something we’ve wanted to do for a long time.

My husband and I both love traveling, but we

approach it in very different ways. He’s a history buff, and anytime we spend a few hours in some museum recounting the granular nuances of this war or that,

No matter what we decide to do, it’ll be a welcome respite from the everyday hustle and bustle of work. Running your own business is an ongoing challenge, and we all need a break here and there. But I’ll be eager to get back to doing what I love: helping the fantastic people I call patients, co-workers, and friends.

“Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV, and is more treacherous than parachuting. We are sitting ourselves to death.”Those are the words of Dr. James Levine, who made headlines back in 2014 when he released the results of years of research into what’s really killing Americans. Just as cigarette use was killing Americans in droves back when the population still smoked, the prevalence of desk jobs is a huge health risk today. Humans, it turns out, are meant to be on their feet and on the go, just like our ancestors were. “We have created for ourselves a modern way of living that clashes with the way we’re meant to be,” Levine says. We’ve seen that sitting can also lead to other health issues, like carpal tunnel syndrome, pinched nerves, and strained eyes and muscles. And if you’re not in good shape (because you sit all day at work), you’re more likely to get injured doing other activities in your life. Levine says that ideally, you’d spend four hours a day on your feet. Of course, that may not be an option for many of you, especially if you work a desk job. We recommend getting up at least once an hour and walking around for a few

minutes. Even a trip to the water cooler is better than nothing! But the real way to combat a sedentary job is to live an active life after hours. A lot of us want to plop down in front of the TV, but we’d be better off taking a long walk after work and spending some time cooking in the kitchen — on our feet, of course. You can also go to a standing desk, or even a treadmill desk —which Levine invented.

INJURY-FREE FLEXIBILITY Stretch With a Professional by Your Side

Flexibility exercises are one of the four vital components of a well-rounded exercise routine. Stiff, tight muscles can cause discomfort and lead to injury, especially as we age. Not only that, but it’s an often-neglected aspect of fitness, shoved to the side in favor of cardio or strength training. As a result, many

patients, fresh off of a physical therapist’s orders to increase their flexibility, jump into a yoga class to give their body a stretch.

These large-group yoga classes result in injury far more often than one would think, as individual attention and training are simply not possible in the midst of 40 other students. Though careful yoga practitioners usually avoid injury, it is all too easy to overextend yourself and damage muscle tissue. Instead of jumping into yoga at a late age, we recommend a dedicated stretching class instructed by a professional who understands each individual student’s physical limitations. FROZEN YOGURT PIE

Looking for a summer dessert you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging in? Try this easy, low-fat frozen treat!

Ingredients

1 premade graham cracker pie crust

1 cup frozen or fresh mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries) 3 (6-ounce) containers regular yogurt (berry flavors work best)

1 (8-ounce) container Cool Whip

Directions

1. Combine Cool Whip, mixed berries, and yogurt in a bowl. Mix with a spatula until well-blended. 2. Pour yogurt mixture into pie crust. 3. Cover pie with foil or plastic lid. 4. Store in freezer for at least 3 hours, or until frozen through. 5. Serve frozen or slightly thawed. 513-874-8800
