ITV Racing’s Chris Hughes and eventing supremo and fellow ITV Racing presenter Alice Fox-Pitt will be hosting After Hours, brought to you by NAF, a live online show wrapping up each day of Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials. After Hours will be filled with exclusive behind-the-scenes content, re-cap on the day’s events and interviews with the biggest names in the sport, as well as a bit of fun thrown in! Rosie Tapner and special guests will be on hand to help tell the stories of the day and offer Chris an insight into the eventing world. The four evening shows will be live from the Palace will be and shown free-to-air on Horse & Country TV, the BPIHT and NAF Facebook channels.

HEYTHROP HUNT

Don’t miss the annual parade of hounds on Sunday at 2pm in the Palace Arena. A tradition of the English countryside, the Parade of Hounds is a real spectacle of huntsmen & hounds. Meet the hounds and find out more about how you can get involved with your local pack. The Heythrop Hunt, formerly part of the Duke of Beaufort’s hunt, gained its independence in 1835 under the Mastership of Lord Redesdale. The Heythrop has hunted four days a week ever since and the hunt staff continue to wear the Beaufort livery of green to mark the previous association. The Heythrop Hunt country covers a significant part of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire and is a mixture of pasture and arable, crossed mainly by jumping hedges and timber. It is lucky to have the backing and support of some wonderful farmers whose generosity they rely on and for which they are extremely grateful. The Hunt forms an intrinsic part of the local community with an active supporters club and a full calendar of events throughout the year. RETRAINING OF RACECHORSES (ROR) The ROR will be showing on Thursday in the Ben and Jerry’s arena starting at 9am as well as a Dressage competition starting at 8am in the Blenheim arena. Dressage championships will also take place on the Friday in the Blenheim arena at 10.45am. On Sunday in the Palace Arena from 2.00-2.30pm, there will be a parade featuring a combination of well-known former racehorses that have been retrained in a second career together with notable success stories of horses excelling in a different discipline after retiring from racing. For further information on the ROR, please visit their stand on the Friday in the big top marquee as part of the ‘educational day’.

DAVID EVANS TALKS THE COURSE

Course Designer David Evans, runs through this year’s Long and Short Courses: This is the fifth time David Evans has designed the Blenheim Palace cross- country track, although he has been involved with the event for more than two decades. He and his team are also responsible for building the fences and for the maintenance of the track – as they were for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The two cross-country courses at Blenheim Palace Horse Trials pose different questions to suit the horses tackling them. The CCI4*-L course is longer, and asks more in terms of stamina and accuracy – it is a very important step on the ladder towards the CCI5*s such as Badminton and Burghley, and needs to prepare both horses and riders for those ultimate tests. The CCI4*-S track is for eight- and nine-year-old horses – they are the cream of their generation, and should be tested, but also educated in a friendly fashion, so it is a kinder track than some others at that level and shorter than the CCI4*L. After competitors gallop out of the Elliott of London Start Box, Fences 1 and 2 are the same for both classes – the Voltaire Design Flower Tray and then the Cotswold Forage Picnic Table. These straightforward but sizeable fences should encourage riders to establish a forward, positive rhythm and enable them to get off to a good start, as will Fence 3, the Stick Pile for the CCI4*-L and Horse Box Seller Open Oxer for the CCI4*-S. While the CCI4*-S horses tackle their own Snow Centre Stick Pile at Fence 4, the CCI4*-L course now comes to its first combination - the Snow Centre Log Roll to Corner (Fence 4AB), on an open distance and jumped slightly left to right. While the long-format track takes us now over the iconic Boodles Flyer hedge with ditch in front at Fence 5, the CCI4*-S competitors avoid this fence this year and curve down left-handed towards the water. Delighted to have the Flyer behind them, the CCI4*-L riders gallop on past the site of the old Dew Pond this year and towards the main arena and take in the Jockey Club Flat-Topped House at Fence 6 and on through the Friends of Blenheim Pavilion to Badges in front of the crowd. This three-part question at Fence 7 asks for bravery over the first part and then accuracy and control to the narrow second and third elements, and horses must keep their focus in this intense and eye-catching area. After exiting the main arena, they pop over the simple but imposing NAF Trakhener at Fence 8 on to the South Lawn of Blenheim Palace and then face the two “skinny” Bentley Flower Arrowheads, Fence 9. After opening out over the trakehner across the ha-ha, they must throttle back for these arrowheads but maintain impulsion and line. Competitors now have quite a long gallop - and a chance to take a breath - before Fence 10, the big Equilatte Open Oxer, and then head down through the woods to the Ayr Equestrian Rail to Rail to Oxer at Fence 11. This comprises of two rails, placed on “humps” - momentum but control are crucial here - and then the traditional stretch over the ditch-oxer out over the park wall. With that behind them, horses negotiate a fairly simple plain obstacle - the Indiba Rolltop at Fence 12, and the CCI4*-L track and CCI4*-S course meet once again; the Indiba Rolltop is Fence 5 for the young horse class. Next comes one of the features of this course, the first water - Fences 13 and 14 for the CCI4*-L and Fence 6 for the CCI4*-S, sponsored by Ford. Here the CCI4*-S riders jump a double log to an arrowhead, landing on the flat ground before the water’s edge, while on the right of that the CCI4*-L course takes them over another double log to arrowhead, and they land on the ramp that leads down to the water.

Both classes gallop across the glorious stretch of water that is the River Glyme, and exit over a brush shoulder fence apiece. The test is is whether riders can shorten their horses’ strides after that flat gallop and keep their focus on this accuracy question. It’s now uphill on to the piece of ground at the top of the track called The Lince, and the two tracks diverge a little once again. The CCI4*-S competitors must jump the Brush Oxer at Fence 9 and then the Stick Pile to Open Corner at Fence 10, while the CCI4*-L course takes us over the Angled Brush at Fence 15 and the a more difficult version of the Stick Pile to Open Corner at Fence 16. These are imposing and come up after a taxing uphill gallop, so riders must check they have petrol in the tank, control and the right balance. There is an alternative here - two gates - but this will waste valuable time. The CCI4*-S course takes in the Bridge Open Oxer at Fence 11 and then, at the highest point of the course with the Blenheim estate woods as a backdrop, the technical combination at Fence 12. This is a log rolltop and two double brushes to a brush corner on undulating ground - balance, energy and responsiveness are tested, but the young horses should have a good educational experience here. For the CCI4*-L track, David Evans has given competitors a single Arch Spread at Fence 16 before their more demanding question at Fence 17, darting in and out of the trees to tackle two cottages, a log roll over a ditch and then a brush corner. It will be so interesting to see how riders line the separate parts up and how much boldness and accuracy their horses have. Fence 18 for the CCI4*-L course and Fence 13 for the CCI4*-S, the Jockey Club Table, is massive but straightforward and something of a “let-up” after the previous combination. But there’s another complex question ahead - Fence 19 for the long-format competitors and Fence 14 for the short-format pairs - the Rail to Ditch to “Bird’s Nest”, in and out again of the woods. The more experienced horses have fewer strides in which to negotiate the three parts, but it offers the same examination of control, suppleness and obedience. They will be relieved to gallop downhill towards the water over the British Horse Society Ditch and Rail at Fence 20 (CCI4*-L) or Fence 15 (CCI4*-S). This offers photographers great pictures, but won’t worry horses at this level. Then it’s back across the stunning River Glyme water crossing causeway and out over the Rowen Barbary Flower Spread - Fence 21 on the CCI4*-L track and Fence 16, the Target Feeds Flower Spread for the eight- and nine-year-old CCI4*-S course. Again, they must come down through the gears to regain balance and maintain impulsion after the water gallop has lengthened and flattened their stride. We go uphill again once more, and turn right-handed to Horse Rail- sponsored Fence 22 for the CCI4*-L, a big picnic table to an arched arrowhead on a right-hand line, while the CCI4*-S competitors tackle a picnic table, brush corner and arrowhead at Fence 17. They will be getting a little leg-weary now, and riders must not let their mounts lose focus. Two versions of a ditch and narrow brush at Fence 23 (CCI4*-L) or Fence 18 (CCI4*-S) shouldn’t cause issues, but looks challenging if you peer down into the gaping ditch. Now we have the final combination - the Cub Cadet Houses with a View, Fence 24 for the CCI4*-L, and the Barrus Houses at Fence 19 for the CCI4*-S. These are two sets of houses on a related distance. You are never home until you cross the finish line, so concentration and balance must be maintained for the final fence, the Pol Roger Brush Flower Tray, Fence 25 on the CCI4*-L course and Fence 20 on the CCI4*-S track - once that is out of the way, the celebrations can begin!
