and faster or to reach new goals, recovery becomes an essential phase in the process. Often times dry needling can be used to speed up this recovery time and allow the athlete to return to training or to playing as soon as possible. Is Dry Needling Painful? For most people there is little to no discomfort with the insertion of the needle. We strive to make the treatment virtually painless however, at times, you may experience a “twitch response” which often feels like a quick muscle cramp or ache. These sensations are normal and even desirable at times. Following this technique muscle soreness can be felt up to 24-48 hours. The application of heat or ice and drinking plenty of fluids usually reduces the soreness. Dry Needling is a powerful treatment technique that when in used with conjunction with our other physical therapy treatments, can help you relieve your pain and improve your function quickly. Call us today to learn more about our dry needling therapy.

Dry Needling is a medical technique performed by a skilled physical therapist to immediately reduce pain, muscle tension and improve mobility. It is used in a variety of musculoskeletal problems including, but not limited to: acute or chronic injuries, headaches, neck pain, back pain, tendinitis, muscle spasms, “Sciatica”, hip or knee pain, muscle strains, fibromyalgia, tennis or golfer’s elbow, overuse injuries, and much more. It requires using a sterile acupuncture needle that is inserted through the skin into muscles, tendons, ligaments, and/or close to nerves. Dry Needling is not acupuncture; it is based on a modern scientific study of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. This treatment technique provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal which ultimately reduces pain. What can be treated by Dry Needling? MANUAL THERAPY

How can manual therapy help me? If you are experiencing increased pain and stiffening in any of your joints and muscles, manual therapy is often helpful. Patients seek out this type of physical therapy for a variety of mobility issues. What kinds of manual therapy exist? Manual therapy is the hands-on component of physical therapy, but there are several different sub-categories within the practice of manual therapy. Each has its own benefits, depending on what the underlying problem is. Among the most widely used are: Soft Tissue Massage Soft tissue mobilization, or massage, focuses on muscles, ligaments and tendons. Often if a patient hasn’t had a chance to use a set of muscles due to illness, or has been injured in that area, the tissues can become scarred, and robbed of the precious fluids that promote flexibility. Soft tissue massage focuses on limbering up these damaged areas, while promoting overall wellness. Joint Mobilization A “restricted joint” issue often occurs after an injury, such as falling and twisting your back, or wrenching your shoulder. The injury to the joint leads to muscle spasms and restricted movement. A skilled physical

therapist practices joint mobilization movements, such as a “glide and slide” of opposing bones, in order to get the joints working properly again. Neuromuscular Techniques At times, muscles work themselves into abnormal states, inwhich themuscle’sstretch reflexhasdifficulty relaxing itself. To treat this, physical therapists use a technique known as “strain/counterstrain” that guides the problematic muscle into positions that are “opposite” the ones at which pain and tenderness starts. Staying in this position of slight tension helps relieve the spasms by gently pulling the muscles into the opposite direction of the reflex spasms. Where can I get manual therapy for my pain and stiffness? Our expert physical therapists are highly qualified to practice manual therapy. With years of specialized training, we provide gentle, hands-on therapies that address a broad range of muscle and joint conditions and injuries. This includes massage (soft tissue mobilization), joint mobilization, and neuromuscular techniques to help you feel better. DID YOU KNOWYOU CANWALK AWAY BACK PAIN?

Did you know that the way you walk, could be causing your back pain? Most peoplehavesomething in theirstyleofwalking thatcancause long termwear and tear. For example, a foot turned-out, a weak abdomen or poor posture contributes tostresson theirbody.TetonPhysicalTherapy&Rehabilitation’s experts are trained to treat walking disorders and teach corrective walking techniques. By changing the way you walk, it is possible to eliminate and prevent back pain. On a daily basis, you walk more than any other physical activity. How you walkdefinesmosteverythingaboutyou, includingyourphysicalabilities. We can help you discover that something about the way you walk, may be the reason you have pain and help you change it. You walk over a million steps in a year Your walk involves many body parts, all interacting together to produce your walking style. It’s as natural as breathing, and if any of your six (two ankles, two knees, two hips) weight bearing joints are not in good alignment, you’re at risk forstructuralpain.Oneminorwalkingerror repeatedmillionsof times can do an incredible amount of damage to your back, muscles, nerves and joints. This can eventually cause pain and arthritis. Often, thecauseofbackpain ispoorstrength --specifically,weakabdominal muscles. The pelvis is held in place by numerous muscles, including the abdominals, hamstrings, glutealsandhipflexors. An imbalanceorweakness in these muscles can lead to pelvic misalignment, causing the pelvis to tilt forward or backward. Forward tilt of the pelvis leads to a sway back. In addition to abdominal weakness, a lack of strength in the gluteals and hamstrings leads to forward pelvic tilt. While the abdominals stabilize the pelvis by pulling upward on the front, the gluteals and hamstrings offer stability by pulling down on the rear of the pelvis. Exercises must be done to

strengthen both the abdominals and gluteals. Walking gives the gluteals a good workout. The abdominal muscles can be conditioned through physical therapy and easy weight training exercises.
