READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY EnrichingYour Mind and SettingYourself Up for Success Via Reading

Literacy is a blessing and a virtue. It expands your mind and takes you to places you never thought were imaginable. March 2 is Read Across America Day, a day dedicated to celebrating books, reading, and getting lost in the pages and words. I’ve found that reading offers knowledge to build upon, an escape, an explanation, and a journey within each book cover. I enjoy books that offer value and teach me lessons on how to navigate life and the world around me. Two of my favorite books of all time are “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie and “The Compound Effect” by Darren Hardy. Both of these books had me captivated from the moment I picked them up, and still today, I fall back on the tips and tricks I learned from each. “How to Win Friends and Influence People” has helped me immensely in both my career and personal life to understand others and be focused on taking care of those who need my help. Published in the 1930s, this book and the lessons embedded within it have stood the test of time. It’s amazing that even back then, Dale Carnegie was so on point, and we still can learn so much from his ideas. “How to Win Friends and Influence People” discusses how to treat others while creating positive and lasting relationships — it might really force you to step out of your comfort zone to interact with everyone!

there is no such thing as overnight success, progress happens for those who work for it. The general idea is that smaller steps over a long period of time have a much greater and more monumental impact on your life and your success map than big leaps here and there over a shorter time period. This book helps readers make radical changes that will lead to success. Many successful people view reading as an essential gateway to knowledge. In reading books that help us grow and better our lives, we pave the way for success. What books do you find great value in? If you have some favorites to share, let me know at your next office visit! After all, they say that reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body!

“The Compound Effect” has taught me the importance of habits and hard work and the compounding effect of small investments into myself and my business. It really inspires you to develop a healthy work ethic and to accomplish your goals. While

I’VE FOUND THAT READING OFFERS KNOWLEDGE TO BUILD UPON, AN ESCAPE, AN EXPLANATION, AND A JOURNEY WITHIN EACH BOOK COVER.

SPRING FEVER ENJOY WARM WEATHER WHILE STUCK INDOORS

The weather is warming up, the sun is out — and you’re trapped inside. Most of us have jobs that leave us stuck indoors during spring’s prime midday hours, and it’s easy to feel like you’re missing out on the season’s best parts. Unfortunately, your boss probably won’t give you the day off just because of the gorgeous weather. So, we’ve compiled the next best thing — some tips to enjoy the season as much as you can while also getting your job done. BRING THE OUTDOORS IN. When the weather is nice, open as many curtains and blinds as possible. The natural light will warm up the room and brighten your mood. While you’re at it, try opening the windows and positioning yourself near one. If you can’t be outside, the spring breeze on your face is the next best thing. Plants decrease stress, and having them on your desk might also trick your brain into feeling less cooped up. TAKE A BREAK. You’ve still got to work, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sneak in a few minutes outdoors. Use your break for an outdoor stroll; if possible, you can also walk or bike to work. At the very least, park farther away to give yourself time to enjoy the weather. Volunteer to do a coffee run, pick up lunch, or take out the mail — you’ll be an office hero while catching some rays at the same time.

TRY WORKING OUTSIDE . If your boss will allow it, there’s probably some opportunity to do a bit of work outdoors. Meetings and conference calls might offer your best option. For in-person meetings, your coworkers will also likely relish a chance to take it outdoors. In the event of a conference call, you won’t need to convince anyone else — grab your laptop and go! It’s not the same as enjoying the weather while you’re off the clock, but it’s a lot better than being cooped up inside.

With any luck, these tips will help you make it to Friday with your sanity intact. And luckily, the weekend is always just around the corner.

Not Just Blowing Smoke

SMOKING NEGATIVELY IMPACTS TEETH AND DENTAL IMPLANTS

We all know that smoking can stain and discolor your teeth, which can be very frustrating because we all love a white and bright smile. But, did you know that it can do more damage than just what you see on the surface? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), when you smoke, your body’s immune systembecomes weakened, making it more difficult for your body to fight against gum infections, and once your gums become damaged, they may not heal as efficiently.

When it comes to dental implants, it is important to know that smoking affects the implant success rate. In fact, the failure rate for those who smoke is much higher than the failure rate of people who do not smoke. When you receive dental implants, your mouth needs time to heal and smokers are more likely to develop bacterial infections after the implants and later on in their implant journey. It should also be noted that the nicotine present in cigarettes affects the blood flow to gums and soft tissues, also making it more difficult for your mouth to heal. While we strongly advise against smoking, if you are a smoker, there are some tips to follow to help keep your teeth or implants healthy and thriving. Be sure that you are brushing properly, at least twice a day, as, according to the CDC, smokers face twice the risk for gum disease. Use a toothpaste specifically formulated for those who smoke (yes, they exist!). Always clean your tongue to fight bad breath and get rid of bacteria — and don’t forget the mouthwash! Most importantly, between dental visits, take a peek inside your mouth from time to time and do a self-check-up. If you spot anything that doesn’t look right, give us a call right away! Time is of the essence!

Smoking can lead to receding gums, loose teeth, loss of bone in your jaw, increased buildup of plaque and tartar, and some very bad

breath. Oral cancer is also a very big risk that you take when you decide to smoke, even if you’re just vaping. By affecting the attachment of soft tissue and bone to your teeth and interfering with the way your gum tissue cells function, smoking leaves your entire mouth susceptible to infections, cancer, and periodontal disease.

Indulge in this St. Patrick’s Day classic — vegan style!

Only Chew What You Can Bite Off

• 8 oz tempeh • 1/2 cup vegetable broth • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 1 tbsp vegan INGREDIENTS

• 1/2 tsp garlic powder • 2 tbsp olive oil • Bread of choice, toasted • 1/2 cup sauerkraut • Vegan Swiss cheese (optional) • 1/4 cup Thousand Island dressing

Worcestershire sauce

• 1 tsp liquid smoke • 1 tsp onion powder • 1 tsp paprika

Exploring Implants, Dentures, and the Human Bite Force

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut tempeh into 4 thin slices. 2. In a shallow bowl, combine broth, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, onion powder, paprika, and garlic powder. Marinate tempeh in mixture for 30 minutes. 3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil. Cook tempeh in the oil for 5 minutes per side. 4. Between toasted bread, layer tempeh, sauerkraut, cheese (optional), and dressing. Enjoy immediately.

Bite force is an important component of the human jaw. The good news is that as humans, we have a bite force strong enough to maybe bite through a pistachio shell. The bad news is that compared to other animals such as crocodiles, sharks, and tigers, we trail so far behind, but it’s okay because we do not rely upon our bite for survival — our diets are much easier to eat! A normal human being has a bite force of about 162 pounds per square inch (PSI). Great white sharks clock in at about 4,000 PSI and saltwater crocodiles are around 3,700 PSI. While we obviously don’t need to have strong bite forces like that, some of the foods we chew rely on a strong bite and powerful munching power. However, did you know that if you wear dentures, your bite force can potentially drop to 1/4 or 1/5 of the normal bite force. That’s reduced by well over 50%! This kind of bite force can greatly affect your ability to chew common foods. Dental implants, on the other hand, serve as a replacement for tooth roots and are held in place by our jaw bones, giving the patient a bite force comparable to actual teeth! But it should be noted that after dental implants are placed within your mouth, it will take some time for healing to happen. As time goes on, your bite force will progressively become stronger and stronger! Bring on the apples, steak, and nuts!

Get Healthy While Spring- Cleaning!

Sunday, March 20, is the first day of spring — which means it’s time for some spring-cleaning. Did you know that cleaning is not just about tidying up a physical space? It’s also about improving overall well- being. Here’s how organization and cleanliness can help you in more ways than you might expect. SPRING-CLEANING REDUCES STRESS AND DEPRESSION. Tidiness and mental health are actually connected. Studies have found that having a clean home is directly correlated to happiness and your ability to focus. Anxiety can spike when laundry is piling up, items are strewn everywhere, and papers get scattered on various surfaces within the home. Clearing the clutter is a great way to boost your mood and increase those feel-good hormones. IT PREVENTS ILLNESSES. Doorknobs, refrigerator handles, light switches, countertops, and remote controls are all things we touch many times a day. Cleaning anything that’s used often is one way to reduce the spread of 4 Health Benefits of Spring-Cleaning IT’S MORE THAN JUST TIDYING UP

germs. By keeping household surfaces clean, we help thwart the spread of viruses and illnesses. SPRING-CLEANING HELPS YOU BREATHE BETTER. Spring often brings pollen that triggers allergies for many. But pollen isn’t the

only thing to blame when people have difficulty breathing. When dust and pet dander build up in your home, your respiratory system is greatly affected too. Deep-cleaning your air filters and vents can make breathing effortless — and it’s truly amazing how this can improve your well-being. IT KEEPS YOU MORE ACTIVE. Off the couch and on your feet! Even just running the vacuum and clearing the clutter from the dining room table will get you up and moving, which is healthy for your heart and body.

This spring season, putting some elbow grease into your cleaning will benefit you in more ways than one. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!
