A TRULY IMPORTANT DAY
S omething I’ve noticed while working in dentistry over the years — and I know it’s true for other medical fields as well — is that when someone comes in for treatment, odds are pretty good there’s a mom behind that action somewhere. Moms Do a Lot — And We Love Them for It

Moms are the ones who push us to get our cavities looked at. They’re the ones who say, “You know, that knee isn’t going to heal right by itself.” And when a kid falls from a tree, Mom’s the one reaching for the keys to the mom van, a class of vehicle that has delivered almost as many people to emergency rooms over the years as ambulances have! I have my own personal reasons for appreciating Mother’s Day, as do most folks. But I think that as a society, it’s really good to reflect on the larger role moms play and thank them for it.

If I’mmaking moms sound like they’re just efficient or ruthlessly effective, it’s much more than
that because that ruthlessness is on behalf of their family — all of it is rooted, first and foremost, in love. There are a billion ways to be a mom, and each one is a little different, though they all come from love. From what I’ve seen, we’re a lucky society because that’s exactly what’s going on with the moms I know.
In our office, we see moms every day. Usually, they’re shepherding kids to and from appointments, always making sure to book the next cleaning or session before they leave. The moms we meet are on top of their insurance information, and we’re almost never the first or the last stop on their busy schedule for the day. I’m always impressed by the disciplined and locked-down scheduling abilities they have. And they also understand the benefits of taking proactive action; we don’t have to explain that it’s better and cheaper to do cleanings twice a year than it is to wait until a cavity appears or some other dental mishap occurs. It’s something that most moms grasp intuitively.
Really, what more is there to say than that? My heart goes out to each and every mom reading this. If you aren’t a mom, you probably know one who really takes the cake. It could be your own, or the next-door neighbor, or your friend’s mom growing up who always treated you like her own kid. It could be a spouse, a sister, or someone else entirely. Whoever it is, this year, I’d like to encourage everyone to do something small but nice for them. Mom’s work so hard and make society a better place, and we need to remember that this and every Mother’s Day.

GET FIT WITH YOUR FAMILY 5 Easy Ways to Get Everyone Moving
May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. As a parent, you probably know exercise is important for your children’s physical development. It helps build healthy bones, muscles, and joints and reduces the risk of developing diabetes and other diseases later in life. But did you know that physical activity also has many mental and behavioral health benefits? It’s been shown to improve children’s cognitive skills and concentration, boost their self-esteem, and reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. One of the best ways to encourage healthy behaviors in your children is by modeling them yourself. Studies have found that more than 80% of adolescents and adults are not getting enough aerobic activity, showing that children often follow in their parents’ footsteps and that exercising together can benefit everyone.
You may be thinking it’s hard enough just to get yourself to the gym, but Stephen Virgilio, author of “Active Start for Healthy Kids,” encourages parents not to limit themselves to traditional forms of exercise. Instead, think of exercise more broadly as “leading an active lifestyle.” And remember that exercise can be fun and a great way to get in more family time.
3. Turn chores into games. Dirt has invaded from outer space and must be eliminated. Set the scene with your kids, grab your tools, and get to work removing the enemy while having fun. 4. Incorporate simple exercises into screen time . Start by making up fun names for exercises like situps or jumping jacks. Then, challenge each other to see who can do the most during your favorite show’s commercial breaks. 5. Get fit in the great outdoors. Cleaning up the yard, planting and maintaining a garden, or just running around outside are all great ways to get in more movement.
Here are five easy ways to incorporate more movement into your family’s day.
1. Create a walking ritual. Start walking around the neighborhood before or after dinner each night. Aim for a 20-minute stroll.
2. Have a dance party. Clear some space in the living room, make a
playlist with everyone’s favorite tunes, and boogie down for as long as you have the energy.
HOW DENTISTRY IS PART OF NATIONAL FITNESS AND SPORTS MONTH
This month, we celebrate National Fitness and Sports Month, as we do every May. It’s funny because people don’t really think about dentistry in regard to sports the same way they think about other aspects of medicine and health care. Sure, you might need a dentist if you’re a rugby player or catch a wild left jab in the boxing ring. But is dentistry really tied to sports and fitness in other ways?
To be honest, we’re not sure why people would ever think that dentistry isn’t tied to overall health and fitness. Often, when people buy health insurance, dental coverage is separate, and maybe that’s the source of the divide. But just like physical therapy, internal medicine, and every other branch of health care, dentistry is first and foremost concerned with the health of the human body. It’s just that teeth are so specialized and unique that you really need to study them, and them alone, to be capable of providing effective care. Fitness and Sports Month is a great idea across the board. We all know we could spend a little more time on our health, whether that’s going for a hike, flossing more regularly, or joining an intramural sports team. As physicians who are concerned with the human body and its health, we love to see people flossing. But we’d also love to see people be more active.
It will benefit their whole health, dental matters included.
Studies are now showing a link between poor dental hygiene and heart attacks; at the same time, some experts suspect that obesity is a risk factor for cavities and other dental problems. It’s not enough to just take care of one part of the body if we neglect the others — you can start lifting weights, but if you’re smoking a pack a day, your health would be far, far better if you just quit smoking instead.
Better yet, starting lifting weights and quit smoking!
This month, join us in pledging to be a bit more active than last month and to focus on the awesome sports and other fitness activities that help us achieve that goal. When we look at the body as a whole organism, we really benefit — from our teeth to our toes!

2 tbsp full-fat coconut milk 1 tsp kosher salt

1 cup long-grain white rice

DIRECTIONS
1. In a blender, purée spinach and kale with vegetable stock, coconut milk, and salt. Set aside. 2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, sauté onions and peppers in olive oil until soft. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. 3. Stir in rice and cook and toast for 1–2 minutes before adding the blended mixture. Increase heat to bring to a boil. 4. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until liquid has evaporated, 15–20 minutes. 5. Remove from heat and let sit for 10 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving.

The tank is white, shiny, and oblong — just big enough for a human to lie down in. When you open it, eerie blue light pulses out along with steam from the water inside. A calm voice from over your shoulder tells you to step in. Would you do it? That image probably brings to mind an alien pod from an outer space movie, but it actually describes a real-life spa treatment here on Earth: float therapy. The concept of float therapy is as simple as it sounds. You step buck naked into a sensory deprivation tank filled with a foot of heavily salted water. Then you lie down, close your eyes, and someone else shuts the lid. You’re encased in complete womb-like silence and darkness. That’s when restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST) can begin. Dr. John Lilly, a neuroscientist studying sensory deprivation, pioneered float therapy in 1954. Today, it’s gaining traction as a popular holistic health treatment, perfect for those who prefer to unwind in isolation. The health benefits supposedly include relaxation, pain reduction, creativity, and better sleep. John Lennon, Jeff Bridges, Elle Macpherson, and even Homer and Lisa Simpson are fans — but does hanging out in a tank really live up to the hype?
