PRESIDENT

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Summer has arrived and thankfully so has Phase 2 which has allowed our Club to return to full operation for outside activities (pickleball will start up fairly soon!). Unfortunately Covid19 is still a serious risk and social distancing will be with us for quite a while longer, which makes it impossible to support inside activities like bridge and mahjong, but we understand many of our members are enjoying online versions. I am happy to report that the Club remains on solid financial footing which will allow us to continue to plan for future Club improvements, such as the long overdue renovation of the kitchen. But the key to continued stability is maintaining a strong membership. We are pleased to report that membership has remained flat through the trauma caused by the pandemic. Now as things settle down, we need to focus on membership growth. We have a strong and active Membership Committee and Meghan Spero provides excellent staff support. But we all know that the most effective way to attract new members is member referrals. So please give some thought to friends or colleagues that you believe would make good members and approach them directly or reach out to Meghan to plan an approach. Thank you! GENERAL MANAGER

SUMMER GREETINGS What a strange time we are experiencing. Normally my July epistle talks about all the special opportunities you have to use your Club. Events, celebrations, social gatherings, athletics - you name it, it happens in July. This year, not so much. Back in March, when this whole thing started, the general consensus was that we would be back to “normal” by now. Hah. Anything but. The time-line that was shared by those in the know, suggested that we would be in Phase III in July. And while the month may end that way, it doesn’t appear that we will start there. Still, we are continuing to advance certain aspects of the Club as you are becoming more comfortable in your environment. Before we get too far into the nuts and bolts of July 2020, let’s spend a moment and explore the idea of “comfortable at the Club”. The more frequently you use your Club, the less trepidation you have in doing so. You know what to expect and things that were once “new” are now just the way things are. That quickly becomes comfortable. You feel “safer”, in large part, because of our efforts to “do it right”. By now, most everyone has had an experience elsewhere that just didn’t feel safe. It wasn’t comfortable. Here’s the thing about comfortable. It can easily transition to complacent. We let our guard down and before we know it, we have a significant number of positives in our members and staff. This is happening at other great clubs across the nation. As they began the process of returning to full operation, many have had to take a few steps back in an effort to regain control of the virus in their community. Lessons learned. We don’t want to go there. It will take a cautionary effort on the part of every member and every employee who is on campus to keep the environment as safe as possible. You may be interested to know that before beginning their shift, EVERY employee MUST complete a daily health questionnaire that probes not only how they are feeling but the health of individuals (family and friends) who they have had contact with.

We encourage members to conduct a similar evaluation before coming to the Club. If something isn’t quite right and you are exhibiting any of the “common symptoms”, please get checked out and stay away. Even if you are feeling great, the importance of physical distancing and PPE cannot be discounted. It matters. Remember, “my masks protects you and your masks protects me.” We value you and we will wear ours. We hope you appreciate us the same way. As we move into July, you will see that we continue to give some relief to many of the restrictions that have been in place for the past few months. Pickleball, Paddle, Bocce and the grass tennis courts have reopened. We have secured a waiver from the State to utilize our indoor tennis courts during inclement weather. Golf events, Member Tennis events, Club Championships are all getting scheduled. Requests for longer hours in fitness, lanes for lap swimming and smaller private dining events are all being accommodated. Guests may now be introduced in all venues. These adjustments all move your Club one step closer to “the way things were”. Don’t forget, though . . . it is still a numbers game. More use by more members (and now guests) requires more employees and more opportunities for close contact. It all totals up to more chances for spread of COVID-19. Enjoy your Club, but please do so thoughtfully. In reading this, you might think that I’m afraid of the virus. Not so much afraid as I have a healthy respect for the thing. What I am afraid of is LIGHTNING. And this is the time of the year when we encounter the greatest number of lightning delays to the various activities taking place at the Club. Please know that we take this particular responsibility very seriously. We are fortunate to have lightning detection devices to guide our decision as to when danger is imminent. In spite of our best efforts to monitor climatic conditions and properly inform you of the threat, members must always take responsibility for their own safety. Please keep an eye to the sky and be safe. That way, I’ll keep seeing you at the Club! Enjoy your summer.

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Our members provide the best opportunity to identify those who would make good additions to the Club. We recognize that sometimes those conversations about membership with close friends or family can be potentially uncomfortable. My role as Membership Development Manager provides a neutral point of contact at the Club who can navigate some of the more difficult conversations especially in respects to the financial aspects of membership. In addition, working in partnership with the Committee, I can assist the proposal process by helping identify potential support letter writers and referrals. I welcome the opportunity to speak with you and answer any questions you may have regarding our process and efforts in membership development. We are fortunate to have a strong foundation of long standing members paired with amenities and service which are second to none. This truly makes WCC one of the finest private clubs in the country. If you have a candidate you wish to propose or have questions about the process please reach out to me at any time. P.S. Don’t forget, for those 65 and older that have expressed interest in membership, there is a fantastic Stock Purchase discount program. For young professionals 35 and younger there is also a discount dues and deferred Stock program. Call or email me and I can provide all of the specifics!

AROUND THE CLUB

And in a blink of an eye, it’s already July!

It has been wonderful to see more and more of you here and enjoying your Club.

Outdoor dining is always a popular options for members – just a reminder that all of our outdoor dining venues are on a first come, first serve basis. As you may have noticed since we’ve reopened, service looks a little different. While our staff is committed to providing you with the best experience possible, we are also committed to providing the safest experience possible. To do that, our staff will continue to be in masks and gloves, and we are limiting our contact with the tables. Should you need anything, give a little wave and we’ll be right over! While our traditional Independence Day celebration won’t occur on July 4th, we are looking to the rest of the summer and fall to schedule some social activities. Our first Lobster Night will be held on the ballroom patio on Thursday, July 30. This casual, outdoor event will feature our popular lobster dinner – with plenty of space between tables. RESERVATION REMINDER Reservations are only accepted in the Tavern & Grille and for parties of 5 or more. Reservations can be made by calling (302) 655-6171. Outdoor dining is first come, first served. EVENING CURBSIDE TAKE-OUT Have you tried our evening take-out service yet? If you haven’t, you are missing out on fantastic entrées and specials. Our daily email is sent out at 4:00 pm each afternoon (Tuesday-Sunday) with the take-out menu and specialty entrée of the evening.

BOOK CLUB

Hi all!

I need a headcount for the Tuesday, July 14th Book Club meeting in the Wilmington Country Club Clubroom. Please respond to me at [email protected] if you will be able to attend so that we can set up the proper number of chairs.

We need to keep our masks on during the meeting and observe social distancing.

NOTE: We have changed the date for our meeting to July 14 and changed the book for discussion to Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman because people are having trouble getting our original book from the library. If you are having trouble getting copies of the book, we suggest that you request a digital copy as the libraries seem to have more digital copies since they do not have to wait for people to bring the digital copies back. Eleanor, the heroine of the book, is a twenty-nine year old misfit with a traumatic past who has worked in the same office for the past nine years. She has had problems with her Mother. When Eleanor wins a lottery ticket to a local concert, she goes to the concert where she meets the concert singer who she believes is destined to be the love of her life and the man with whom she is destined to be with forever. Eleanor is terribly lonely and feels isolated. When she helps an old man with his problems, she begins to understand how to relate to people. Her transformative journey towards a fuller understanding of herself and of life has begun. Join us at 4:00 pm in the Clubroom as Janet Robinson leads the discussion of this warm and often humorous book. For August, we have selected The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes. Set in Depression-era America, Moyes tells the story of five amazing women who travel through the mountainous areas of Kentucky to deliver books to small town residents as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library. UPCOMING SELECTIONS September 15th - The Dutch House by Anne Patchett (There Fiechter) October 6th - Oil and Marble by Stephanie Storey (Diana Lopez) November 10th - First: Biography of Sandra Day O’Connor (Jane Wood) December 1st - The Flight Girls by Noelle Salazar (Jill McDonald)

GROUNDS

A NOTE FROM GROUNDS It’s hard to imagine six months of the year is in the books. Even though some of the Delaware beach bars and restaurants have voluntarily closed due to an uptick in corona virus cases, for us here in the northern part of the state, glimpses of normalcy can be seen across the Club. Weekly events have returned, and our first tournaments of the year will take place over the Fourth of July weekend in tennis and golf. In the department, we have been fortunate to have several employees return from seasonal furloughs and the difference in care of all areas outside of the clubhouse is noticeable. The rough has slowed it’s vigorous spring growth to allow our mowers to maintain heights of cut in a manner we hope that is not penal for recovery shots. More attention to detail oriented tasks such as divot filling and watering areas such as fairways with hand-held hoses will increase over the coming weeks. String trimming of ponds and tree trunks will occur on a regular basis. Lastly, sprinklers will be edged to increase visibility of the yardages to the center of the green. The weather for the last two months has had a positive effect on rounds played and tennis courts bookings. The flip side to this statement is we are down seven inches of rain accumulation for the same time period of May and June, 2019. We have experienced many days with sustained or very gusty wind conditions that attributed to high evapotranspiration rates. For example, a rain event this past month could total a ½ inch one day, but blustery conditions the next day would virtual dry out areas throughout the property, shortening the window of opportunity to not run the irrigation system. This scenario played out numerous times over the past two months as if one would hit repeat on the stereo system to listen to their favorite song over and over again. A sign of this and our increased use of the irrigation system during these dry times is the capacity of the lower reservoir to the left of 12 North. We could use a little help from Mother Nature to get to September when we are bound to have a few tropical fronts come through the Delaware Valley. As the golf schedule returns to normal, so does the Practice Tee schedule. The main tee will be on turf Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday through Sunday. We will use mats on Mondays and Thursdays each week. When the main tee is on mats, the turf at the rear tee will be available for use. It is vital for the season-long

success of the teeing ground to incorporate the straight-line divot pattern while you are practicing. The same methodology should be used as well at the short game area and wedge range on Old 7. The straight-line pattern will heal faster as the void is narrower than taking divots either in patches or a square box. The darker green colored turf in regenerative growth in a divot, as seen in the picture with the red arrow.

Last year, we informed you of the invasive Spotted Lanternfly that has become prevalent in our area. Nymphs are on the move, and can be seen on the underside of leaves and branches. Although the Tree of Heaven, Ailanthus altissima, is the preferred host, the Spotted Lanternfly will venture to other plant material. Now is the time to apply a post-emergent insecticidal application to help thwart the spread of this bug!

We hope you, your families remain safe throughout July and we will see you at the Club!

A NOTE FROM RACQUETS

It has certainly been great getting back on to the tennis court with organized match play, junior clinics, cardio classes and adult clinics. Be sure to sign up through ForeTees in advance for all these activities. For our junior tennis clinics either email the Racquet Shop at [email protected] or call at 655-6513. In July we will be offering several member events which we will be announcing soon. We will be conducting our junior tennis club championships from July 13-16. The event will be conducted like a USTA tournament with a referee and guidelines in place for safe play. Sign up in the Racquet Shop if you would like to play boys or girls singles in the 10,12,14,or 16 age divisions. We are getting closer to the completion of our new tennis/sports facility. Once the project is completed and we receive the go ahead from the state to use our indoor facilities we will have several special events. Look for these announcements coming in the near future.

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE MENTAL TOUGHNESS AND FOCUS ON THE TENNIS COURT

FOCUSING SKILLS

1. In between points repeat a phrase in your mind to keep you from thinking about other thoughts. For example, “Only the ball” or “This Point”. 2. After the point is finished look at your racquet strings until the next point is ready to be played to keep you from looking around at other happenings around the court. 3. Have a conversation with yourself between points about the strategy you would like to execute to win the next point. 4. Keep focused on the next point and not the rest of the match. 5. Shadow a specific stoke like the return of serve before you actually receive the serve. Visualize hitting the ball to a specific area of the court.

WATCHING THE TENNIS BALL

1. Watch the path of the ball leaving your opponent’s racquet and see it all the way into your strings by keeping your head down at the point of contact after the ball leaves your racquet. 2. Watch the rotation of the ball coming at you to the point of contact. 3. Use the bounce-hit technique of saying bounce when the ball bounces on your side and hit when you are contacting the ball. 4. Try to read the letters and numbers on the tennis ball as you hit it. Although this is difficult it will force you to watch the tennis ball better. 5. Focus on your point of contact. Try to contact the ball at hip/ waist level and in front of your body.

Enjoy! Be creative and create your own workout with exercises that spell out July Fourth, Independence Day, or Freedom Fit. FREEDOM AND COVID-19 FROM A HEALTH PERSPECTIVE While we celebrate our country’s freedom and independence, there is much being written whether our freedoms are being taken away from us in the face of the pandemic. Here are a few interesting quotes to stir the conversation (fitness and health are the union of body and mind, after all!) ”The tension between private liberty and public health in the United States is hardly new. Americans have demanded the latter in times of plague and prioritized the former in times of well-being

since at least the Colonial Era.” Editorial Board, New York Times

“It is not authoritarian to demand that people maintain physical distance to save lives. It is authoritarian to demand it without giving diverse people the means to do it.” Jonathan Cohen, The Hastings Center “Though there are restrictions on my freedom from coronavirus, I know I am free in the most important ways. But I also know that my freedom will never be truly complete until everyone can share these freedoms with me.” Maya Elianna Fritz, 12-year-old student, Forward

Come share your perspective with us in the Fitness Center—it is one of our greatest freedoms!!
