PRESIDENT
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Someone asked me the other day what I worried about the most and I have been thinking a lot about the answer. The fact is I worry about a lot of things, but my major concern is whether we will have the funds to continue to improve our grounds and facilities in the years to come. We are fortunate to belong to one of the best private country clubs in the country and none of us want that to change. And like most clubs, we have a big list of future capital needs ranging from the maintenance of our buildings, grounds, and equipment to major new projects such as renovating the north course. This year, under the leadership of the Strategic Planning Committee, being chaired by Megan Greenberg, we are going to work at developing a process and criteria for how the Board can prioritize future capital projects. I hope to share more on this later this year. As I mention in many of my messages, the most important determinant of our future success is maintaining a healthy membership level. We start 2020 in a very stable position. Membership has been relatively flat for a few years now, which is a significant accomplishment given changes in the country club industry and the local economy. However, even a modest growth would make it easier to plan and fund future projects. This is the prime season for membership recruitment and your club has never looked better! So please do whatever you can to help the membership committee identify and attract new candidates for membership. Thank you! Gary Ferguson President

GENERAL MANAGER
MARCH GREETINGS As we enter into what we hope will be the waning days of winter and prepare for the upcoming outdoor season, there are no detailed topics to discuss. Instead, I have a number of various items that are of a small, yet significant, nature but need to be shared. Think of it as my “Spring Cleaning”. As with any “Spring Cleaning” some items you dust off and retain, others will be discarded because they are no longer necessary or relevant to your current situation. I’ll leave it up to you to determine the appropriate course of action . . . • Just as we did last year, March will be the final month of operating under the winter schedule. Full Tuesday service will resume beginning Tuesday, March 31st. Towards the end of March, if weather and conditions dictate, there may be some “early openings” in the Bag Room, Hut and Pub. These will be communicated in the “Weekly Happenings”. • One of the most enjoyable aspects of the month is NCAA Basketball. As always, we will be hosting a special multi-day March Madness Party in Pub37, Thursday through Sunday, March 19th through 22nd. Of course, we will have a bracket competition as well. Details will be shared via email and our social media accounts and on our Club app. • Social Media accounts?? Club App?? Yup. Join us on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with all the latest that’s going on around your Club. If you haven’t yet downloaded the app, you need to. It is our fastest growing form of communication. Click here for instructions. • We will all be adjusting our clocks (spring ahead) on Sunday, March 8th. I hope you take full advantage of the longer daylight hours to use the Club into the evening. • With the mild winter, we have enjoyed several days of “bonus golf”. In fact, there has been enough activity on the North Course that we will be reopening the Snack Bar on the “honor system”. A limited assortment of beverages and snacks are available for members to self- serve and sign. Since it is so early and the risk of a hard freeze is likely, it would be premature to reestablish the water fountains and ball washers. • For those of you who frequent the tennis side of the Club - a word of caution. As construction proceeds on the improvements to the indoor facility, there is a natural tendency to want to

“check it out”. Please don’t. These are active construction areas and unseen dangers are common place. • One of the great privileges of being a member is the ability to utilize your Club’s facilities for private entertaining. If your plans for the year include the opportunity to host a party or business gathering this year, please consider having it at your Club. Our reputation for ease of planning and flawless execution is well known. Let us prove it to you. • Annual, semi-annual and quarterly food minimums come due at the end of the month. In the event you fail to fulfill this obligation, please don’t ask for relief - none can be given. • Your usage of the Fitness facilities has been strong all winter. At times it could even be considered crowded. To help keep the space safe and organized, please return any exercise devices to their appropriate “home” after use. It is also very important, especially during “cold and flu season” to use the anti-bacterial wipes before and after using a piece of equipment. • Also in the “health and fitness” arena . . . don’t forget that our services also include massage treatments and physical therapy. • Sometime this month, the 2020 edition of the Rules and By-laws Handbook will be made available. We will notify all members via email with a link to the online version. Hard copies will be placed in each Senior Member’s locker with additional copies available at the Front Desk for pick-up. Once you receive yours, please take a moment to review it. Knowledge and adherence to the Club’s rules and schedules will enhance your usage of the facility as well as that of your fellow member. HEALTHY HABITS REMINDER More important than ever, we would like to provide a friendly reminder of the need to have healthy habits to prevent the spread of colds and flu. At the direction of the CDC here are a few friendly tips: • Try to avoid close contact with sick people. • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. • If you are sick with flu symptoms, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the cold and flu. As always, thanks for reading and I’ll see you at your Club. Phil Iannelli General Manager

CONNECT
CONNECT WITH US We mentioned in the January Bulletin that we would soon begin a revamp of the Wilmington CC website. Some of you may have noticed in the past week that this has already begun. Let me assure you that the functionality such as accessing your statement, signing up for events, or booking the golf simulator is still 100 percent available and will be throughout the process. As we finish updating the site over the next two weeks, you will notice a significant change in the look and layout with the intention of increasing efficiency while reducing the amount of click throughs to find the specific information you may be looking for. Not to mention, it will flow with all of our other Club branding while being modern and attractive. One important addition we will be making is that of a “communications” page. This page will have links to our social media, the membership directory and email preferences just to name a few. The membership proposal page, account statements and event registration will again be the main focus of your dashboard as you login. We are very excited to see the Wilmington CC website continue to develop and look forward to the completion in the coming weeks.

AROUND THE CLUB March brings some wonderful activities and the hope for spring weather! We start March with a member favorite Dining Room event, Steakhouse Night. Why venture into Philadelphia for a delicious, upscale steak dinner, when you can enjoy it in the comfort of your Club? March 15th, otherwise known as Selection Sunday, kicks off the NCAA basketball tournament, March Madness. We will be hosting adult and child brackets through ESPN – be on the lookout for an email on how to register and make your selections! With Spring right around the corner, reservations are open for our traditional Easter brunch. Celebrating Easter at your Club is an easy way to get family together for a delicious meal, while having us handle the details for you! Of course, before Easter Sunday, we will be hosting our annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 11. We can’t wait to see everyone! BOOK CLUB For Tuesday, March 3rd, we have chosen Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End , Atul Gawande’s masterful exploration of aging, death and the mishandling of both by the medical community. Gawande grew up in India where both his mother and father were physicians. He saw that as people aged in India, they retained their independence and dignity and usually died in their home with their family. As a doctor, he was not educated about helping his patients with their own mortality. Physicians were taught to diagnose and treat diseases. How should we care for our loved ones who are aging? Through gripping research and sensitive stories about problems his patients and their family members encountered, Gawande enables us to see the mistakes that are sometimes made and to find better ways to deal with aging patients. He looked at caregiving places in order to see how they confront illness and death and to see if approaches such as hospice and palliative care can improve our final years. This is a book everyone should read. Join us on the 3rd at 4:00 pm in the Ladies’ Lounge as Francesca DiGuglielmo leads the discussion of this extremely important book. For April, we have chosen Pachinko by Min Jin Lee, which is the New Castle County Reads book selection for 2020. The novel describes Lee’s sweeping four- generation saga of a Korean immigrant family trying to survive in a largely hostile land. We hope we will see you at “An Evening with Min Jin Lee” on April 23rd at 7:00 pm at the Chase Center on the Riverfront where Lee will discuss her monumental epic. Our Book Club will discuss Lee’s book on Tuesday, April 7th at 4:00 pm in the Ladies’ Lounge.

SAY CHEESE Let’s face it, cheese is really good but does it actually make you smile? A great grilled cheese sandwich is a simple culinary gift that puts a smile on the youngest of us and still delivers throughout our more mature years. Traditional cheese courses are served after the entrée, whether it be the more customary English method at the end of the meal, the last course, or the French method of serving prior to the sweets and just after the entrée. At Wilmington Country Club, Chef Tribbitt always features an excellent selection of cheeses from throughout the world which you can indulge prior to your meal as an appetizer or after as alluded to previously. Our current selections showcase many of the finest cheese producing regions from around the globe. Included in our current cheese board are Beemster XO (Holland), St. Malachi (Doe Run Farm, Pennsylvania), Campo del Montalban (Spain), Il Truffelino (England), Cabrales (Spain) and Delice de Bourgogne (France). Beemster XO (Holland) – cow A farmer-owned cooperative founded in 1901, the hand stirred curds can be traced back to the mother brine from the co-ops’ founding in 1901. St. Malachi (Doe Run Farms. PA) – cow Founded in 2008, Doe Run Farms has produced world-class cheeses including the St. Malachi, which garnered a gold medal at the 2016 World Cheese Awards in San Sebastian, Spain. Campo de Montalban (Spain) – cow, sheep, goat This cheeseoriginated inSpainas a cheese considered to be a Manchego style cheese, semi-firm in texture and slightly tangy and buttery on the palate. Il Truffelino (England) – cow Il Truffelino is a premium cheese combining the creamy texture of classic English cheddar with the complex luxuriant flavor of Black Summer Truffle. Cabrales (Spain) – cow, goat, sheep Cabrales is a Spanish semi-hard, fatty blue cheese that is aged for two to four months. Unlike other blue cheeses is injected with Penicillium, Cabrales cures from the outside of the cheese to the inward. Delice de Borgogne (France) – cow Delice de Bourgogne is a classic French triple crème made by blending full fat cow’smilkwith crème fraîche.

GROUNDS
A NOTE FROM GROUNDS The last time our immediate area received less snow than this year (0.9 inches) was the winter of 1997-’98, where only a trace amount fell. We still have a few weeks left before the first day of spring on March 19th, so there is a chance we could eclipse the next benchmarks of one inch and 1.2 inches, which occurred in 1949 and 1972, respectively. The weather has certainly has had an impact for growing conditions. The turf under the protective covers for the South Course greens and Practice Tee is slightly ahead of schedule. The warmth in February has enabled the Bermuda grass on the Practice Tee to “wake-up,” or break dormancy. This is good and bad for the turf. While we know the Bermuda survived it’s first winter after sodding last June, breaking dormancy in February is about two months early. Keeping frost from forming on the Practice Tee will be a priority. If this were to happen, the turf will go back into dormancy and will take longer to wake-up in April. Regarding our greens, the turf has had growth over the winter. So much so, we mowed the North Course greens the week of February 17th. We will, in early March, pull back the tarps on the South Course and cut the greens. This will be the first mowing since mid-November. Mowing will further promote healing on the South greens from the November aeration.
Jon Urbanski Director of Grounds & Golf Courses

During the month, we will plant new arborvitae shrubs between clay courts two through four and five through seven. The older shrubs were removed as part of the transplant program that has seen the perimeter shrubs replaced surrounding the racquet facility a few years ago. The arborvitae will be pest resistant for diseases, deer and insects. More importantly, the older shrubs posed a safety threat to our staff as they have grown either too close to the chain-link fence, or worse yet, into the fence line. The new plant material can be maintained to ensure future pruning efforts will allow for care and plant health.
Above, we mentioned our late season aeration of the South greens. This maintenance program also included the tees and fairways during the same time period. With our goal of reducing in- season maintenance disruptions and the presence of aerification holes, there is no schedule spring aeration of the South Course. Regarding the North Course, we are scheduled to aerify the greens, tees and fairways on April 6th, 7th and 8th. We are expecting an early start to the growing season. If the Bermuda grass is a sign of warmer temps are just around the corner, then so too is the time period to apply pre-emergent materials for seasonal grassy weeds such as crabgrass. Typically, you would want to apply these materials about the third week of April. Mather Nature may move this timeline up a month.

NEW IN THE GOLF SHOP March means spring is around the corner and new merchandise is arriving in the Golf Shop. This month we are receiving arrivals from Peter Millar, Polo Ralph Lauren, Johnnie-O, KJUS, GFORE, Donald Ross, Holderness & Bourne plus Melly M and IBKUL for women. In addition, we are stocked up on the latest in footwear from GFORE, Foot Joy, Adidas and Ecco, as well as all the latest golf clubs from Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway and Ping. Be sure to stop by and see all the latest offerings. Also happening in the Golf Shop this month is our annual ‘Buy three dozen golf balls, get one dozen free offer’ from Titleist, Callaway and TaylorMade. Be sure to look for more information from the Golf Shop on this extremely popular annual promotion. ONLINE TOURNAMENT DIRECTORY ACTIVE One of the improvements offered last season that is online again for 2020 is our online tournament directory. This directory gives every tournament, including men’s, women’s, mixed and juniors, a dedicated webpage of its own. On this event webpage members have the ability to see tournament information prior to the event including format and schedule, as well as the ability to sign-up directly online for all of our events. Following the event, tournament results, player analytics, and pictures of the event are posted on the event webpage. This directory is accessible from the Wilmington Country Club website’s golf page, or via the club’s We have one month until we go live with the new World Handicap System at Wilmington. In case you missed last month’s Q&A, HERE is a link to some common questions about the new system. Here is a link to a written transcript of the Member Q&A. Also, a few things to keep in mind: 1. Scores must be posted the same day as played. Handicaps update daily and will vary based on tee played. Scores may be posted on the USGA GHIN app, or one of the terminals in the Clubhouse. Note that terminals in the Clubhouse will ask for hole-by-hole scores, automatically accounting for maximum hole score. 2. Maximum score for handicap posting purposes on any hole is net double bogey (Par + 2 + any Handicap Strokes). 3. You only need three 18-Hole scores to establish a Handicap. If you do not have a Handicap any member of the Professional Staff in the Golf Shop would be happy to establish one for you! It is easy and takes just one minute. Foretees app under the Golf Event Registration link. SCORE POSTING BEGINS APRIL 1
If you have any questions at all, please email mshank@ wilmingtoncc.com.

RACQUETS
A NOTE FROM RACQUETS Wilmington Country Club has a long history of competing in several women’s tennis leagues. During the spring/summer WCC fields two teams in the Women’s Interclub Tennis League which was established in 1899 and is the largest women’s tennis league in the country. We also have seven teams in the Wilmington Cup tennis league which offers teams from Cup 1 to Cup 10. We field four women’s tennis teams in the USTA tennis league in the spring and summer. These teams represent 110 women that are playing weekly tennis matches for Wilmington Country Club with about another 50 women that serve as subs for the program. We want to thank the many captains that have led our teams through the years. We will be hosting our annual pre season women’s tennis camps and opening women’s tennis day on April 14-16. Look for details about these events and sign up on the ForeTees app. Our pickleball program continues to grow. We are offering weekly learn and play clinics on Wednesday morning at 8:45 am - 10:00 am and Thursday evenings from 6:45 pm - 8:00 pm. Our next Saturday pickleball play and social is on March 14th at 6:30 pm. NEW TENNIS AND SPORTS FACILITY We are planning a full array of sport activities for when our new tennis and sports facility opens in the spring. In addition to many planned activities like tennis, basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer, pickleball, among other sports, during the summer we will be offering an open gym Monday through Friday from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm. These activities will be supervised for our 7-9 year old juniors and our 10 and older juniors may join us for these fun activities. Look forward to an announcement of the sports events we will be offering weekly as well as special events. See you on the courts.

SQUASH NEWS SQUASH DOUBLES MEMBER-GUEST We had a very successful Member Guest Squash Doubles Championships last Month. In Division 1, Bart Mackey III and his guest Nick Giacco defeated defending champions Todd Anderson and his guest Scott Brehman three close games. Bart and Nick brought some serious fire power and speed to claim the title. Using ballistic ground stokes they overwhelmed Buzz Hannum Jr. and partner Ben Hughes in the semi-final. Todd and Scott defeated Chris Saunders and his guest Bob Bolling in another strong battle 3-1. With Handicap scoring used in Division 2, there were numerous 5 game barn burners. In the first semi-final, Lauren McCrery and her guest, Kate Rapisarda, beat Jon Saunders and guest Kleon Diamantopoulos. Lauren’s killer lobs and Kates strong forehand took down the first seeds. On the other side of the draw, Jeff Simonton and guest Blake Rohrbacher squeaked out a very long 5 game tussle against Doug Herrmann and guest Gordon Reynolds. In the finals, with many back and forth lead changes across all five games, Lauren and Kate defeated Jeff and Blake 15-12 in the 5th. JUNIOR SQUASH GRAND PRIX Our 7th Grand Prix will be held March 7th from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. These 11 and under junior singles tournaments have been chock full of players, with as many as 24 juniors. We usually have 35 to 40 matches, and all are within 20-25 minutes long. Come out and watch our exuberant youngsters compete in lighting round fashion. Looking ahead, the April Grand Prix will be April 4th. SQUASH COURT MAINTENANCE Monday March 16-Tuesday March 24th the squash court floors will be sanded and restriped. This process stakes a while due sanding of the courts as well as having to wait for the paint to dry for at least 72 hours. All courts will be down during this process. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the court floors will look brand new when completed. LAPHAM GRANT MATCHES This April 16-19, Wilmington Country Club will once again host the famous Lapham Grant Matches between Canada and the U.S.A. Dating back to 1922, it is believed to be one of the oldest amateur sporting events between two countries, having been played for 98 consecutive years. WCC hosted this event in 2008 with great success, and now in the 99th edition, all USA and Canadian team members can’t wait to get here. The Lapham Cup holds 4 divisions. The Grant Trophy matches were inaugurated in 1945, the Crawford Trophy matches in 1999, and the Lawrence-Wilkins Trophy matches in 2001. These four events, held at the same time and venue, are hosted in alternate years by Canada and the United States. Scott Simonton, the USA Lapham/Grant Captain in 2008, returns as Captain of the Lawrence/Wilkens team, and Ed Chilton is the Captain of the Lapham/Grant team. The Coveted Lapham Cup is valued at over $50,000 and similar in size to the Stanley Cup. The Grant Trophy doesn’t disappoint either. These trophy will be displayed near the Café prior to the event. The benefits of sanding are brighter floors, better traction and a cleaner look. Our floors have lasted quite some time, but they definitely are ready for a good sanding.
We are looking for members who would be interested in billeting some of the Canadian players. Also, those interested in volunteering to help with the event should contact Ed Chilton.

FITNESS
ELITE PHYSICAL THERAPY
Are you an active individual looking to make the most of the spring and summer months? Elite PT is excited to announce that we will be offering free injury-prevention screens on
March 20th for all WCC members. This assessment will proactively identify issues that could potentially lead to an injury during your valued active lifestyle. Our experienced physical therapist, Kyle Hughes PT, DPT will assess your flexibility, strength deficiencies, and postural alignment. After his assessment is complete, he will provide you with useful exercises tailored to meet your specific needs and decide whether additional physical therapy care may be beneficial for you. Call (302) 477-1536 to schedule your 15-minute screen while availability lasts! Located inside the club’s gym, Elite PT currently offers physical therapy treatment to all WCC members on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. TIPS FOR BETTER SLEEP • Sleep-promoting lifestyle enhancements • Make lists to keep you organized so you don’t forget anything. • Before bed, breathe deeply, in through your nose and into your belly for five minutes to calm your mind and lower your heart rate. • While breathing, visualize yourself performing at your best. • Avoid bright light in the evening (that includes the light from cellphones, laptops etc.); it can inhibit melatonin production by sending alerting signals to the brain. • Keep your room cool, at about 65 degrees. Body temperature is tied to your sleep cycle, so if you’re too hot it can interfere with that cycle causing restlessness. • 7-9 hours of sleep are recommended. Aim to go to bed and arise at the same time each day • Lack of sleep impairs decision-making, increases risk of injury, and can reduce performance Article by: Rick Howard, Fitness Director
