When you think about the month of February, what usually comes to mind? For most of us, it’s probably Valentine’s Day or hearts, but there are other organs that deserve some attention this month. Feb. 14 is also National Organ Donor Day, a day dedicated to spreading awareness about organ, eye, and tissue donation. As an organ donor myself, I find this very important day doesn’t get the attention it deserves. When I think back on when I first became aware of the great need people have for organ donation, I remember a time when I was about 8 years old. I hung around a kid in the neighborhood who was in need of an organ donation. If he did not get the organ he needed, he would very likely pass away. I vividly remember seeing the stress his parents faced when trying to navigate the situation and how hard they worked to ensure their child would survive. He did end up getting the donation, but we hardly kept up with each other as we got older. I have been an organ donor for some time now, but I didn’t become one until I had kids of my own. I realized how precious their lives are and wanted others to be able to help them if they had any type of health issue. I wanted to provide that same type of relief to other parents, so becoming an organ donor made sense. I want to help people in whatever capacity I’m able to. My time on this planet is finite, and if I can help others, especially when it comes to saving a life through organ donation, I want to do everything in my power to help. We certainly need more organ G eorgia is a blue-collar state — a grassroots mix of farmland, mountains, and urban development representing ever-expanding opportunities. Being a native of North Atlanta, I have spent most of my life in this fair state, cultivating both my character and my profession as I grew up. Now, I have a distinct opportunity to help those around me in ways I hadn’t anticipated in my younger days. I lead The Lyman Firm as a proud curator of justice for the everyday person, somebody who might not have gotten a fair shake before they met me. I believe one person can be the face of a greater movement, and these are the everyday people — the heroes — I work for as I drive our cases forward to the fullest extent within our legal system, fighting for what’s right. My passions weren’t always for courtroom thrills, though. Growing up in Smyrna, I sought to chase a different kind of rush: the roar of the racetrack. I wasn’t half bad either, eventually taking my hobby for auto racing from amateur status in 2004 all the way to semi-pro in 2007. Unfortunately, like so many other things that went down along with the economy the following year, my racing career crashed in 2008. Shattered by the abrupt end to my racing journey due to a lack of financing,

donors because so many people are waiting to receive the help that could potentially save their lives. According to the Health Resources & Services Administration, nearly 107,000 men, women, and children are on the national transplant waitlist. Seventeen people die each day waiting for an organ transplant, and every donor can save eight lives while enhancing 75 more. To put it simply, by being an organ donor, you will help other people survive and live longer lives. You often hear these stories about siblings or parents donating their kidneys or other organs to their loved ones, and I think to myself, what better way to show your love? It’s an incredibly selfless and noble gesture that goes above and beyond the normal acts of love we’re accustomed to. I believe, without a doubt in my mind, MORE people should consider becoming organ donors. We see it often in our field when we’re dealing with someone involved in a car wreck or other accident. We should all aim to live by the standards of the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you were in need of an organ, wouldn’t you hope organ donors were out there ready to help? If you’re looking for something different to do this Valentine’s Day, I implore you to become an organ donor or to even donate blood. These simple gestures can completely change or even save someone’s life, and there’s nothing better than giving someone a longer or better life. James and three-year-old daughter Cleo — I am fully immersed in the fun-loving, homely, and exciting life of my family. They are my foundation, and without them nothing would be possible. But I also have a second family of sorts in my clients, whom I treat with the respect and attention a person is owed whenever they find they’re backed in a corner and need help. The pleasure I get from representing good, honest people in the courtroom is unrivaled when compared to the other fields of profession I’ve engaged in life. Oftentimes, I ask a client to share the names of the attorneys they’ve worked with on other cases. Almost none of them are able to muster an answer — the names of their lawyers completely lost in the tides of life’s trials. “We certainly need more organ donors because so many people are waiting to receive the help that could potentially save their lives.” That’s when I tell them that there are a million different lawyers out there doing a million different things, but when I take on your case for a serious injury or a wrongful death suit, you’ll remember me as a man who gave you the best possible chance while shooting you straight every step of the way.

I began to look for a new avenue to pour my passions into.

As we grow older and further away from our teens and 20s, we begin to realize that life isn’t always about going fast, both literally and metaphorically. It was during my post racing downtime that I realized I wanted to go back to school at Georgia State. After spending years as a writer and editor, I discovered and followed my newfound calling and began practicing law after graduating from law school. After years of unparalleled grit, drive, and success in the field of law, I was fortunate enough to be able to open my own practice in January of 2018. This new venture has even allowed me to work alongside my brother, a paralegal and case manager, in what has been one of the most exciting periods of my life. For now, our plans for the future include an imminent expansion of the firm and growing the company in ways that still allow us to keep our fundamental values and operations in check.

Brock vs. Brock The Man Who Sued Himself

On July 1, 1993, Robert Lee Brock made a mistake. By his own account, he had a few too many alcoholic beverages that evening, and in his drunken state, he committed breaking and entering, as well as grand larceny. Brock was arrested, and the court sentenced him to 23 years behind bars at the Indian Creek Correctional Center in Chesapeake, Virginia. In 1995, Brock decided he deserved restitution. Reasoning that he had violated his own civil rights, he sued himself for $5 million. For his family’s pain and suffering, as well as his children’s college tuition, he requested $3 million. He also asked for $2 million to support his needs during his 23-year prison sentence. Central to Brock’s claim was that, due to his drinking, “I caused myself to violate my religious beliefs. This was done by my going out and getting arrested, which caused me to be in prison.” And since he was a ward of the state, he explained that Virginia should pay the $5 million on his behalf. After all, he was incarcerated and unable to work, and the state was responsible for his care. Plus, he promised to pay the money back after his release.

In a move that shocked no one (except, perhaps, Brock), Judge Rebecca Beach Smith dismissed his case. While she did call his claim “ludicrous,” she also praised his creativity, stating that he “presented an innovative approach to civil rights litigation.” Perhaps the lawsuit against himself wasn’t his first or last attempt at legal restitution. He once filed 29 complaints in a single year. Due to the repeated suits, the court removed his ability to file further litigation. “None of Brock’s allegations have ever been found by any court to have any merit,” the decision read. “Because Brock’s repeated, frivolous claims have placed a significant burden on this court, as well as on the district court ... we hereby impose sanctions upon Brock.” Brock’s case ranked No. 3 on Time Magazine’s list of Top 10 Outrageous Legal Battles. So, while he didn’t achieve wealth, he did gain fame. It was an impressive feat for a man who found a novel way to take personal responsibility for his actions.

More Than a Pinch of Salt 3 Ways to Reduce Your Sodium Intake

The average American adult eats 1,000 milligrams (mg) more than the recommended amount of sodium each day. Salt enhances flavor, is easy to add to food, and tastes pretty delicious. Unfortunately, too much of it is unhealthy and can cause high blood pressure or kidney damage. Here are some steps you can take to reduce your sodium intake without sacrificing flavor.

Ingredients

• 2 chicken breasts • 2 oz mozzarella cheese, cubed • 2 canned artichoke hearts, chopped • 4 tsp sun-dried tomatoes, chopped

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 365 F. 2. Cut a slit lengthwise to create a pocket in the middle of each chicken breast. Place the breasts on a baking sheet. 3. In a medium bowl, combine the mozzarella cheese, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, basil, and garlic. 4. Divide the mixture in half and stuff each chicken breast pocket. Using toothpicks, seal the edges of the pockets. 5. Season the chicken with curry, paprika, salt, and pepper, then bake for 20 minutes or until the chicken reaches 165 F. 6. Remove the toothpicks and serve with rice, potatoes, salad, or roasted vegetables!
