3DAYSOFDESIGN Thank you for the three amazing days in our showroom!

At Havwoods we are simply grateful and amazed that so many of you visited us during 3DaysofDesign and took part in our workshop! We had an amazing time creating and teaching everyone about the Henley collection and the steps that go into creating these beautiful and unique textured surfaces. We also learned what can be done to prolong the life of a wooden floor in a high-traffic areas. Delicious breakfast was had by all, tapas and wine tasting were well received, and lastly our coffee wagon was outside the showroom to warm you on your travels around 3DaysofDesign. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we did, and now that you know us better why not pop over to collect free samples and benefit from a thorough

guidance and technical knowledge on wood flooring. We hope to see you all again at this year’s 3DaysofDesign!

SITUATED IN THE MIDDLE OF BUSY COPENHAGEN CLOSE TO THE CENTRAL STATION IS THE MODERN AND YOUTHFUL NEXT HOUSE COPENHAGEN PROJECT. The hotel is the perfect destination for young travellers with two bars, a football lane, fitness and movie theatre in the basement, and an amazing lounge and restaurant on street level to invite the bustling city in. The theme of the interior is an exclusive feel mixed with a youthful and modern twist. Havwoods have provided four different floors for this beautiful project. Our Coffee plank covers the reception area. In the bars and the lounge, the textured Rhyl floor flows throughout the spaces, while the Granne block creates a cosy and intimate atmosphere in the movie theatre. And lastly in the restaurant the wide Jutland plank gets to shine.

All the floors have a high wear layer and a textured surface to match the busy programme of the project. The architect wanted to make sure that the floors would fit the building for many years and the floors from our Henley collection were a perfect match.

The wide selection of Havwoods floors fits well with the diverse interior of Next House Copenhagen and we were able to provide a floor for all the different situations.

THIS PREMIUM AND WELL-RESPECTED VENUE RECENTLY UNDERWENT A TRANSFORMATION TO ENHANCE ITS COMPTON AND EDRICH SECTIONS, WITH HAVWOODS COMMISSIONED TO PROVIDE A VISUALLY PLEASING FLOORING SOLUTION FOR BOTH THE STAND AND DEBENTURE LOUNGES. Combining 1,508 spacious, luxury apartments with unrivalled private on-site amenities including pool, gymnasium, sports hall, spa, lounge, business gallery and rooftop garden, the development is fast becoming a local icon. LOCATED IN THE HEART OF LIVERPOOL ON THE ALBERT DOCKS, IS THE STUNNING TAYLOR WESSING PROJECT. KEEN FOR A PRESENCE IN THE NORTH OF THE UK, THE INTERNATIONAL LAW FIRM CHOSE EDWARDIAN PAVILION, A GRADE I LISTED BUILDING ON LIVERPOOL’S ROYAL ALBERT DOCK, AS THEIR NEW OFFICE IN THIS VIBRANT AND FLOURISHING CITY. With a brief for the renovation to create a more open feel across the workplace, Havwoods’ Columba Select Chevron flooring from The Italian Collection was selected for its striking and flowing pattern. Made from European oak, the board used not only offers a modern finish but also delivers natural character from the timber’s organic textures. The colours and materials throughout the office were carefully picked out to complement and bring balance to the existing building. The Columba chevron flooring beautifully softens the interior, sitting exceptionally against the monolithic black stained oak elements of the joinery. Biophilic design was also cleverly incorporated, and the use of tropical palms and hanging plats showcases a sense of calm, delivering a space that is welcoming and familiar.

THIS LUXURIOUS TOWNHOUSE IN THE BEAUTIFUL LONDON BOROUGH OF CHELSEA HAS RECENTLY BEEN RENOVATED TO CREATE A SPACIOUS, CONTEMPORARY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS HOME. In order to maximise the available natural light, a large extension was added to the rear of the property and the first-floor terrace was extended to create a completely new configuration with a bright, airy and more open feel. The design concept was to create a home that was simple but sculptural, bold but in a subtle and understated way. To achieve this, a pared-back, clean, minimalist palette was chosen for the interior scheme with tactile materials that added comfort as well as a level of softness to the space. Havwoods was selected to provide a comprehensive wood flooring solution that would align with the desired aesthetic and contribute to a seamless flow throughout the interior. Alsace Rustic in a herringbone design was chosen for its natural, light colouring and beautiful texture and grain. As the property needed to be suitable for renting, the wood floor had to be robust and able to look its best for many years to come, the lacquered finish of the Alsace herringbone block provides stain resistance but in a more subtle way. From a sustainable point of view, the timber is FSC certified and therefore met the design criteria for an environmentally conscious home.

When it comes to choosing your forever floor, the overall effect is characterised not only by your choice of colour but also by the natural grade of the wood, the surface finishing technique and the pattern. The type of pattern plays a leading part in the flooring portrait, so once you have decided on a colour scheme, use the following guide to help you choose your favourite; from the popular plank style, a more adventurous pattern such as Herringbone, Tumbling Dice or Chevron, or maybe something more dramatic like the design panels available in numerous designs and shades.

MAKING THE GRADE THE FIVE MOST TYPICAL TIMBER FLOORING GRADES OFFER A GUIDANCE OF WHAT YOU MAY SEE. THE BOARDS ARE USUALLY SELECTED BY EYE AND THESE PARAMETERS ARE SIMPLY A GUIDE. CURRENTLY NO INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR TIMBER FLOOR GRADING.

PRIME Typically, prime grade has few, if any knots, and these will be of minimal size. There will also be a minimal amount of sapwood and filler, if any at all. The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch. There will be a relatively small amount of colour variation in the timber itself.

SELECT Typically, this grade will have a mix of almost prime boards with other planks which have more knots of a limited size. Expect some variation in tone from heartwood and sapwood as well as small checks (cracks across the growth ring). There will be some filled elements, such as broken knots. The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch.

CLASSIC Classic Grade floors show the natural variation of timber without allowing some of the more characterful features in more rustic grades. Planks with very few knots will be mixed with some planks containing larger knots or checks (cracks across the growth ring) which may be filled. Variation between tone from heartwood and sapwood can be expected but is controlled. The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch. CHARACTER Typically, character grade will include both heartwood and sapwood and allows a wider range of colour variation. Knots are larger and you should expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch.

NATURAL/RUSTIC Known as either natural or rustic grade this allows a virtually limitless size and number of knots. Heartwood will be used, there will be colour variation, sapwood and filler; you should also expect checks (cracks across the growth ring) and possibly some end shake (cracks between the rings). The colour of the filler is intended to complement the natural structure of the wood, where features such as knots are in contrast to the surrounding timber, and it may vary from batch to batch.

FINISHING TECHNIQUES AND CHARACTERISTICS

IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THESE OUTSTANDING FINISHES, THE WOOD WE OFFER HAS TO GO THROUGH VARIOUS PROCESSES WHICH AFFECT DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOD IN DIFFERENT WAYS. SOMETIMES COLOURED OILS ARE ADDED TO PRODUCE AN EVEN MORE DRAMATIC APPEARANCE.

SAPWOOD

Sapwood is the living part of the tree through which water and sap flow. It is always lighter in colour than the heartwood and certain fuming, smoking and colouring processes emphasise the sapwood since it doesn’t react to such treatments to the same degree. (The effect of these treatments on planks containing sapwood is shown left) By definition sapwood contains more moisture, however this is no cause for concern since all Havwoods’ timber has been carefully dried and its stability is ensured when supplied in an engineered form.

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF WOOD ARE PURELY NATURAL AND THESE ARE EXPLAINED BELOW.

KNOTS & FILLERS

A knot is either the base of a side branch or a dormant bud around which the grain flows. A knot is sometimes replaced by filler and this may be of various colours: white, grey, brown and black are shown here.

MEDULLARY RAYS, CHECKS & SHAKES

These white, ribbon-like medullary rays are an indication that the plank has been crafted from quarter-sawn timber. Checks and shakes usually occur at the end of a board and may be cut off.

SMOKING AND FIRING GRADES

Smoking and fuming are essentially the same and refer to a process whereby the hardwood is exposed to ammonia gas for 24 (single) or 48 (double) hours. The colouration is surface deep only. Unlike staining, smoking reacts to the chemical composition of the individual plank, so the ultimate shade will vary. This variation is considered an asset, however if you prefer a more even tone we suggest you consider choosing stained rather than smoked wood. Fired products are treated in a vacuum, sometimes for several weeks, and the dark colour runs throughout the lamella providing a genuine visual alternative to tropical hardwoods.

PATTERNS THERE ARE VARIOUS DIFFERENT TYPES OF DESIGNS OR PATTERNS AVAILABLE. STANDARD PLANK IS THE MOST COMMON STYLE BUT YOU MAY DECIDE ON SOMETHING MORE INTERESTING LIKE A HERRINGBONE OR CHEVRON.

This is sometimes known as plank, strip or boards and is available in many different lengths and widths.

HERRINGBONE

Solid blocks and larger engineered wood blocks means you can create many different sizes in this pattern. Herringbone blocks may be laid in single or double patterns, or if they are the correct proportion you will be able to produce patterns called ‘Tumbling Dice’ ‘Basket weave’ and ‘Ladder’ patterns.

CHEVRON

One of the more visually impressive patterns combines geometric angles with directional flow. Our chevron pattern floors have a 45° angled point and the alternating rows deliver a stunning two-tone aesthetic.

FINISHES NO MATTER YOUR CHOICE OF FLOORING THERE ARE DIFFERENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE DEPENDING UPON YOUR PREFERENCES FOR BOTH THE FINAL AESTHETIC AND YOUR DURABILITY NEEDS. UNFINISHED Allowing you to be the artist, this is a completely natural surface, without treatment. It’s up to you to finish how you wish. Unfinished timber can include different grades of character so all you have to do is re-sand the surface once installed, and create using the blank canvas. LACQUERED This is normally a polyurethane coating that covers the pores of the wood and forms a hard, resilient surface, protecting it from dirt and moisture ingress. A good quality lacquer will protect a wooden oor for anything from 12 months to 6 years, depending upon the amount of foot traffic. OILED Oil penetrates deep into the wood and brings out the true beauty of both the color and grain, as well as providing protection for the oor. In addition to providing a natural look, oiled oors lend themselves to being spot repaired in the event of surface damage. UV CURED HARDWAX OIL Combining the wear advantages of a lacquer with the subtlety of oil, this nish is micro-porous, water-repellent, dirt-, wear-, and stain-resistant against wine, beer, cola, coffee, tea, fruit juices and milk. It will not crack, ake, peel or blister. VALOUR UV CURED HARDWAX OIL Valour is a film-forming oil that allows the surface to be layered like a lacquer but retains the appearance and characteristics of an oil. It is scratch and impact resistant and offers the hardest wearing oiled finish in our range.

Helping local populations to preserve their forests is the task of international non-profit organisations like the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®). Another international organisation that you will find references to in our brochure is the PEFC, which stands for Program of the Endorsement of Forest Certification. Their focus is to ensure that certification is accessible even to small and family owned forests. Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute addresses issues from a different angle; educating and empowering manufacturers to become a positive force for society and the environment.

The HavSeal seal of approval is awarded to those products that exceed the already high standards needed to ensure entry into our portfolio. Not only do we consider the origin, the legality and sustainability of each of the products, but we also take into account the energy that goes into production of the product, the chemical content of the product as well as the mill’s commitment to re-using its waste.

The Green Seal award is given to the products that offer extra international accreditation, identified as coming from sources that offer higher standards of energy use and waste generation.

The expansive European Oak top layer befits the most audacious spaces, and the balancing Oak base-layer providing the ultimate stability of board. VENTURE PLANK

Venture Plank is a high-quality performance engineered timber board characterised by a comprehensive spectrum of interesting shades and a smooth finish. The two-layered construction of Venture Plank comprises of a hardwood surface backed by a superior quality birch ply to ensure a greater level of stability. This construction guarantees a durable and sturdy floorcovering suitable for both residential and commercial applications. Venture Plank can also be used with Havwoods’ Magna raised access flooring system, and all of the products are suitable for installation over underfloor heating. Whilst lacquered and unfinished boards are included in the collection most of them are oiled. The new, ultra-tough Valour oiled finish is available in this range while others utilise a fourth generation UV cured Hardwax Oil. Both finishes provide exceptional durability whilst maintaining the natural appearance of wood. Venture Plank has a traditional tongue and groove fit profile with a bevelled edge. All Valour finished Venture Plank boards are FSC® (FSC-C009500) certified timber.
