December is all about gratitude and embracing how impactful it can be not only in your life but the lives of those around you. Gratitude is defined as “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” Quite simply, gratitude is short for counting our blessings. Below are our favorite tips for remaining grateful this season! Below are our favorite tips for remaining grateful this season! 1. Find gratitude in the challenges you face in your life. I know it sounds counterproductive but thinking about and acknowledging the things that are not ideal in your life right now can put into perspective those things that are great. This applies to physical
therapy, too! We know that the healing process isn’t always easy, and that injury can throw off the plans you’ve made. Acknowledging that you have a bounty of health outside of your injury will put into perspective all that you do have to be grateful for, and hopefully make your healing process seem like an easy feat. 2. Practice mindfulness daily. They say that just eight weeks of continuous gratitude practice starts showing changed brain patterns that lead to greater happiness. Just eight weeks to change the way your brain functions to start habitually focusing on the positive in your life. Science shows the connection between gratitude and happiness. One study* stands out. The
study randomly assigned three groups: one was instructed to note five things that they happened to them that made them feel grateful within a week. Another group was instructed to note five things that made them feel burdened within a week, and the last group was instructed to choose five things that happened to them, not focusing on either positive or negative. After ten weeks, the “grateful” group reported being 25% happier than the “burdened” group. If you wonder how this relates to you, know that those who reported they were happier participated in exercise on average 1.5 hours or more in a week, and reported fewer health complaints. Pro tip for practicing mindfulness: every night, note three great things that made you feel great during the day.

You can also use this journal if you decide to practice any meditation as a form of mindfulness... you would jot down any thoughts (positive or negative) you had during that mindfulness session to reflect. 4. Kiersten’s 6 year old son, Ryan, has a favorite dinnertime activity. He calls it “High. Low. Cheer” and has become a consistent part of the Langel family routine. With 3 young children, it is often challenging tofindaway to listenandshare with each other. This game has become a great way to create the time to listen to each other, hear excitement, and see any struggles. With all of the time spent with family (and at a table) in the holiday time ahead, Ryan would like to share his game with you and encourage you to give it a try!
