Beyond the Barbeque

True Employee Appreciation This Labor Day

And just like that, the summer draws to a close. Today, Labor Day is most commonly known as the last “hoorah” before summer transitions to fall. It is celebrated with barbecues and parades, and many are very lucky to get the day off of work. But, when you look a little deeper, Labor Day carries a much larger meaning. Its real purpose is to show appreciation for the working class. As Labor Day nears, it really got me thinking about the importance of business owners expressing their appreciation for their hardworking employees and how they can do so. Without employees, your business wouldn’t operate, and without their tenacity, it wouldn’t succeed. Those who work for you are the backbone of your company and a little recognition goes a long way. Beyond taking care of your people, employee appreciation builds trust. Trust is key when it comes to employee retention. Maintaining those who work for your company is the best way to grow your company from the inside. Having the ability to promote from within, and keep the same people working together year after year in a dynamic team, is second to none. In the tree service business, the employees work every day in extreme weather conditions, dragging logs and running the chipper trucks, and pushing it to the limits to get the job done. Bringing your employees something to eat and drink is just one simple way to say “thank you” and communicate your gratitude while taking care of them. Throwing an employee appreciation day is another way to help your staff “feel the love.” Even if your company does not have an office, parks, pavilions, beaches, restaurants, cafes, and residential areas are great places to gather the whole team together. Enjoying an afternoon playing games, eating, and hanging out together as a workplace family will resonate well with your employees. Celebrating holidays and business accomplishments together is fun and builds a family atmosphere within the workplace.

Some smaller ways to let your staff know that they are meaningful and important to the success of your company are by remembering their birthdays, taking interest in their personal lives, caring for their wellbeing, and having some fun on the job. Treating team members like family goes a long way and will make your job much easier and more enjoyable as well. Improving communication and having an “open door policy” where employees feel comfortable coming to you in any situation is paramount as well. Have you ever heard that food is the way to someone’s heart? It’s because it is true! Bringing donuts for the team in the mornings or organizing a pizza lunch on Fridays is always a genuine gesture to offer a quick token of appreciation. When your staff is happy, the atmosphere at work is much more welcoming and performance is optimal. Labor Day dates back to 1894 and originally was intended to celebrate the blue collar working class and their contributions to our country. This Labor Day, take the time to not only honor and thank your staff, but to think a little deeper on how you can improve, build, and maintain relationships with those who are the most important in your business: your employees.
