DID YOU KNOW? Modern dog shows first began more than 150 years ago through two gentleman, Neil Pemberton and Michael Worboys, which became a fashionable Victorian phenomenon and attracted controversy then as it does now. WHEN WAS THE FIRST MODERN DOG SHOW? The first modern dog show, on 28–29 June 1859 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was an added attraction to the annual cattle show. Its country character was clear, as only setters and pointers – sporting breeds – were shown and the prizes were guns. It was a low key start to what

would be, by the end of the century, a hugely popular pastime, with dog owning becoming fashionable among all classes of society, and which had huge implications for canine breeding. SHOWING NON-SPORTING BREEDS? The first show to include non‑sporting breeds was held in Birmingham later in 1859 and was such a success that a year later, the Birmingham Dog Show Society ran the first National Dog Show, for which there were 267 entries, with 30 breeds, judged in 42 classes. The main organiser was Richard Brailsford, a gamekeeper on the Knowsley estate of the Earl of Derby, then leader of the Conservative opposition and three- time prime minister. The earl’s pointer, Juno, won a prize in 1862, indicating how rapidly participation in dog shows spread to the country’s elite, making dog fancying fashionable and respectable. By the end of the 1860s, the National Dog Show was attracting over 700 dogs and 20,000 paying visitors.

MY LICENSED BREEDER We know that good breeders work really hard to deliver the very best care for their dogs, including their puppies and especially those who enter competitive competitions with their productions. So we get that putting time aside to read through DEFRA’s guidance and trying to make head or tail of what is required for a breeding licence can be daunting. My Licensed Breeder have teamed up with the UKBKC to provide a unique opportunity to anyone registered to the club and interested in pursuing a career breeding, to have access to our CPD approved training and software at a discounted price. HELPING YOU TO BECOME LICENSED At My Licensed Breeder, the home of animal welfare education, we will provide all breeders with guidance on the Animal Welfare Act, supporting all breeders on their journey to becoming licensed. We will give breeders an inside view on what local authorities will be looking for, and with our Tech for Good software you will easily be able to set up and operate as per the regulations set out by DEFRA. No headaches! Our courses can be delivered online one to one, so we can teach you in the comfort of your own home via zoom. Or

you can join one of our group workshops, where we can teach you collectively alongside other breeders, who will be sharing ideas. Whichever way you choose to learn, in partnership with the UKBKC, My Licensed Breeder will be by your side, every step of the way, supporting you, on your journey to becoming licensed.

Join others today, who are now licensed to breed.
