The Estate Department provides a high quality service to enable the delivery of a state-of-the-art learning environment for students and the business community within the context of the Estates Strategy. In this context, the ‘estate’ comprises all freehold, leasehold and join venture land and buildings occupied as part of the University business. Over the last 10 years we’ve invested over £150 million in our facilities to ensure that our students have access to some of the most modern teaching spaces in the country. Last year we invested £28 million in improving our campus infrastructure and teaching resources. The Estate Department is comprised of three distinct, but closely connected service areas; Property and Development, Building Maintenance and Campus Services. The university currently has sites in Derby, Buxton, Leek and Chesterfield and manages; seventeen tutorial sites, ten residential sites and three commercial sites, which covers over 109 hectares of land. As is the case with many universities, the quality and condition of Derby’s estate has undergone significant improvements over the past few years, with over 98% of the estate within Condition A and B.

The Estate department employees over 250 staff, over the four sites and provide a wide range of services to students, staff, visitors and the local community.

Campus Services: Campus Services deliver diverse and wide ranging services to all visitors to the university and includes; all aspects of a twenty-four hour security provision, travel and transport services, which includes a city wide bus shuttle service which is offered free of charge to all university students and staff, cleaning services for all sites, print, post and portering service and space planning and management. The University of Derby is committed to sustainability, both in environmental and financial terms. Within the department is a Quality and Compliance Manager, with responsibility for the university’s environmental management system accreditation (ISO 14001) and the university is committed to continual improvement in all aspects of the service and support it provides to the university and wider community.

Property Development: The Development Team is responsible for leading the capital development programme, this includes the expanding property portfolio and all refurbishment projects throughout the estate. The estate ranges in age from pre 1900 to our newest STEM building, which was completed and occupied in 2017. Building Maintenance: The Building Maintenance team lead the maintenance of the buildings and infrastructure across the estate portfolio. The age of the majority of the buildings within the estate portfolio reflects the maintenance liability and general estate condition. The university is committed to providing the highest level of facilities for the students and this has resulted in outsourcing specialist services, with a multiplicity of contracts in place for lifts, fire safety and air handling units. The university is committed to reducing its carbon emissions and has invested in low carbon and greater energy efficiency technologies throughout the campus, where viable.
