MAY 2022
Many of you know I like to stay active. I’m an avid competitor in Ironman races, and I regularly bike, swim, and run. You can also find me up on the slopes in the winter! And if I’m not training, I try to get in at least one hour of exercise every day. It may sound excessive, but I have a few good reasons. The foundation for this lifestyle started with my dad. He was always encouraging me to stay active, and he followed his own advice! My dad was very active in fitness as a runner, tennis player, and skier. He signed me up for sports, and he continually encouraged me to find something I enjoyed that also kept me active. And this wasn’t just a way to make sure I expelled some energy. When my dad was 9 years old, his dad passed away from a heart attack. My grandfather was only 41 years old. That event motivated my dad to take care of his body and his heart, and he passed that idea onto me. We even used to run together. I’d say the ambition paid off; my dad is a very healthy 82-year-old man. I’d like to say my health was the main reason why I too became very involved with fitness, but if I’m candid, it’s also because I enjoy the competition. I’m relentlessly competitive to this day! When I was a kid, I used to set up obstacle courses in the backyard or even host basketball camps for the younger kids in my neighborhood. If there was something going on that meant I could be active and enjoy some friendly competition, I was there. As I got older, I also realized exercise could be a refuge for me. When I was a young attorney, I was working long, long hours at an insurance law firm. At the same time, I was raising a young family. There wasn’t a lot of time for myself. So, I committed to making exercise and physical activities my escape. All I had to do was lace up some running shoes and go! I could compete against myself and find the mental relief I was looking for. From there, fitness became a lifestyle. FINDING STRENGTH AND SOLACE IN STAYING ACTIVE Why I Move So Much
that I am incredibly physically active while also representing and working with people who are struggling with debilitating injuries that may make activity difficult. However, even with life-changing limitations you may experience, activity can still be part of your life. Something as simple as a walk each day can improve your mobility, strengthen your body, and become a solace for your mind. There’s an incredible power between the mind and the body. When you stay active, you exercise your physical and mental capacities. And in doing so, you start to believe you can do more and more, so you stay active, too. Don’t hesitate to ask your doctor or physical therapist about what exercises you can continue to do after an injury. This month, as we approach National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, I encourage everyone to make activity a priority. Focus on the ways in which you can make exercise, sports, or intentional motion a regular part of your
lifestyle and hold yourself accountable. As a pro tip, my youngest and I enjoy the challenge of closing the fitness rings on the Apple Watch or Apple Fitness app by ensuring we get 30 minutes of brisk activity. You can try to do something similar to help motivate you.
Movement of any kind can change your life for the better. Whatever you do, just move!
And as someone who has been active their whole life, I know the kind of toll an injury can take on your mental and physical well-being. It’s not lost on me

Let’s face it: The kids probably aren’t going to get you what you really want for Mother’s Day. We know it’s the thought that counts, but you’ve still earned some pampering. It might be time to take matters into your own hands by celebrating yourself this year — no matter what your children and/or partner have planned. Here are some ideas to get you started. Take the day off. It might be the greatest gift any mother can give herself. Let your partner, the grandparents, or a babysitter take care of the kids for the day and spend time doing what you want to do. Maybe that’s sleeping in late, finally going to see a grown-up movie in a theater, reading a juicy novel, or going on a shopping spree. It doesn’t matter what you choose — not having to worry about temper tantrums, meals, or bedtime is the true gift here. Enjoy a girls’ day out. You probably don’t get to see your friends as much as you’d like, so take the time to get together for some kid-free fun. You can treat yourself to brunch, manicures, or just a bottle of wine and a good laugh. Having the opportunity to catch up with the gals you love the most can be a great way to rejuvenate. Create a group text and get the party planning started! Have a date night — with the person of your choosing. With whom would you most like to spend some alone time? If it’s your partner, arrange a romantic evening for adults only. If it’s your best friend, schedule a fun outing. Maybe your ideal Mother’s Day involves the kids after all! If so, plan some one-on-one time with each of them, doing something special you know they’ll love. Whomever you choose as your date, you’ll feel more connected (and appreciated) than ever. If your special Sunday is already booked with family activities, remember you can always pick another weekend to treat yourself. That way, you can still get your ideal day — and enjoy the kid-prepared breakfast you’ve come to expect and love. Do It Your Way HOWMOMS SHOULD CELEBRATE THIS MOTHER’S DAY
‘THEY BECAME LIKE FAMILY’
“I would give this firm 10 stars if I could. I had a personal injury a year and a half ago. Karl Hager took my claim, and he and his assistant kept me informed on a weekly basis. I was never treated like I was a problem; I could call and ask any questions anytime, even if I was having a bad day. They became like family, always welcoming and concerned with my well- being. This firm stays on top of your case, and they are honest; you will always know where you stand. Thank you so much Karl, Andrea, and Paulette for your hard work. God bless you all.” –Kathleen B.

Explore Utah With Attorney Katherine Brownlow Up on this month’s blog, our attorney Katherine Brownlow takes us to the landscapes of Utah, where she explores a beautiful scene. Check out a short teaser below. “One of my favorite things about living in northern Colorado is the easy access to some truly stunning natural wonders. While we have many world- class destinations in our backyard, I recently ventured further afield into southern Utah to visit Zion National Park. [It] is 232 square miles of high desert pines and deep sandstone canyons. Surrounded by these majestic cliff faces, most people spend their time in Zion Canyon, where weathered red sandstone walls soar 2,000 feet above the valley floor and river below. This was my third trip … Every time, I see something new. If you’re thinking about visiting … here are my suggestions for a rewarding vacation.”
As always, we’re also proud to share our Pet of the Month, thanks to Animal Friends Alliance. Since 2020, Animal Friends Alliance has provided care, education, and support to our community to create loving, supportive pet owners and pet-to-human relationships. You can learn more about the alliance online, but for now, let’s learn about Howie, our Pet of the Month! Meet Pet of the Month, Howie!
Howie may be a shy, gray kitty, but at just 1 year old, he already knows his favorite spot is cuddled up next to his humans. Howie will run for cover and hide when he hears loud sounds, like outdoor sirens or a noisy TV. This means he will do best in a quiet home! Once he feels comfortable, Howie loves to roll over for belly scratches or rub his nose against other noses. Howie is also a sucker for grooming, leaning his head into the brush so you can get into all the nooks and crannies. When it’s playtime, just drag a shoestring on the ground and watch him chase after it. He even knows how to play fetch! It may take a while for Howie to warm up, and he may choose to be alone sometimes. But once he knows he’s comfortable, Howie will become the perfect lovable companion. You can inquire about Howie and other adoptable pets online at SavingAnimalsToday.org .
