THE PRINCESS An addictive documentary about Princess Diana, marking the 25th anniversary of her death on August 31st. It’s a chronicle of her life culled entirely from archival television news footage and other public records – it’s the real story laid out exactly as it happened – or, more precisely, as it happened and as it was presented to the public, those being, quite often, two very different things. The Diana we see is the one we’ve always seen, the one we’ve been watching for forty years – 25 of them since her death in 1997 – but how different it all looks knowing what we know now. PREMIERES 4TH  CLICK TO SEE MORE BEAST A recently widowed man and his two teenage daughters travel to a South African game reserve managed by an old family friend. COME BACK ANYTIME Self-taught Japanese ramen master Masamoto Ueda and his wife Kazuko, have run their tiny Tokyo ramen shop, Bizentei , for more than forty years, serving his legendary ramen to scores of devoted customers, making the restaurant a true place of community. For Ueda, it’s more than just a livelihood; it’s his life. And his die-hard regulars are more than just customers; they are true friends. On the weekends, he leads eclectic groups out across the Japanese countryside, where they forage, harvest, and share local produce, such as pears, bamboo shoots, rice, and wild mountain yams. This deceptively simple film shows the ways in which, while food sustains the body, sharing food sustains the soul. PREMIERES 4TH  CLICK TO SEE MORE

THE CONFERENCE On 20 January 1942 in a villa on Lake Wannsee, Berlin, leading members of the Nazi regime and German administration came together to discuss the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”. The historically accurate, haunting drama follows the minutes of this meeting as recorded by Adolf Eichmann, of which only one copy remains – a key document pertaining to the Holocaust and our understanding of it. The film is a gripping examination of the cynical nature of humankind’s violence unto itself – a startling reminder that these horrors, so methodically perpetrated, could happen again. THE METROPOLITAN OPERA: ARIADNE AUF NAXOS

In the ingenious 1916 quasi-chamber opera by Richard Strauss, the composer hit on a formula that allowed him to express several aspects of operatic storytelling in a single work, especially in the latter half, an opera-within-an-opera, that includes some of the composer’s most atmospheric music, while Ariadne herself delivers one of Strauss’s most magnificent soprano solos. Conducted by Marek Janowski. Soprans Lise Davidsen in the tile role, with soprano Brenda Rae, mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, tenor Brandon Jovanovich, baritone Wolfgang Brendel. GLORIAVALE DIRECTED BY NOEL SMYTH AND FERGUS GRADY

An eye-opening, heartrending and rage-inducing examination of the widespread abuse inside New Zealand’s infamous Gloriavale Christian Community cult and the institutional failures that have allowed it to continue. With unprecedented access to the notoriously secretive community, the filmmakers follow brother and sister John Ready and Virginia Courage, escapees fighting to free the rest of their family from the organisation’s grasp, as they mount a ground-breaking legal case against the cult’s powerful leaders. Long associated with allegations of sexual and physical abuse, human rights violations and fraud, the true extent of Gloriavale’s crimes and the cruelty of its leaders is exposed as the Ready family risk losing their home, their community, and those they love for a chance to bring positive change to Gloriavale. Filmmakers Fergus Grady and Noel Smyth said “We are deeply grateful to the leavers who trusted us to tell their stories, and we hope that, through this film, New Zealanders will be moved to support the people who’ve managed to leave Gloriavale, those who may escape in the future, and those who are fighting for justice”. The latest creation from Oscar Winner Jordan Peele, Nope , is a dark pop nightmare of un- canny science fiction and complex social hor- ror thriller that unpacks the seeds of violence, risk and opportunism that are inseparable from the romanticised history of the American West... and from show business itself. When Peele released the genre-breaking Get Out in 2017 and then Us in 2019, he disrupted and redefined modern horror. Now, he reimagines the iconic American summer movie and gives it a true sci-fi-meets-horror slant, with a cast of award-winning actors that have worked with him in the past, and keep coming back for more. In particular, the film reunites Peele with Daniel Kaluuya, who plays OJ Haywood, one of sev- eral residents in a lonely gulch of inland Cali- fornia who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. In Southern California’s arid and rambling Santa Clarita Valley, siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood (Keke Palmer), have in- herited a ranch from their industry-legend fa- ther, Otis Haywood Sr. They are carrying the torch of his craft as animal wranglers for film and television, but it’s a tough business, and despite their skills and the artistry of their pro- fession, the pair faces financial challenges – JORDAN PEELE THE WRITER, DIRECTOR & PRODUCER OF NOPE TALKS ABOUT HIS LATEST VENTURE ON THE FILM FRONTIER, AND OF MAKING A MOVIE THAT QUESTIONS MOVIE MAKING. and the heartbreak inherent to a trade where livestock is the talent. Adjacent to their prop- erty sits Jupiter’s Claim, a family-fun theme park and petting zoo predicated on the white- washed history and aesthetics of the California Gold Rush. It is owned and operated with evangelical pride by Ricky “Jupe” Park (Steven Yeun), a former child star who is saddled with a tabloid-tragic backstory that he has spent a lifetime trying to escape. As OJ and Emerald begin observing unexplained phenomena on their vast ranch, it leads them down an obses- sive rabbit hole, but Peele is not just making an inventive sci-fi thriller. Nope is tinged with the acidic satire that suffused his previous two movies, as the director examines why the eas- iest way to process horror these days is to turn it into breathtaking entertainment. In the wake of the cinematic and critical suc- cess of Get Out and Us , both of which dis- rupted and redefined the horror genre in singular ways, Peele was eager to expand his cinematic canvas, embrace a challenge un- like any in his filmmaking career so far and tackle the granddaddy of genre movies: the summer ‘event’ film. “ Nope is of a bigger scope than any story I’ve ever tried to tell,” he says. “And from a filmmaking perspective, the pro-

cess has been an adventure unto itself. Every single department has taken huge risks and committed full tilt. I tried to write a script for a movie that I didn’t know how to pull off. And then I assembled a team to help me pull it off.” As he began to explore options, one particular subgenre of summer event films felt particu- larly ripe for reinvention. “I had this idea of making the Great American UFO movie – a flying saucer horror film,” Peele says. “And not only a flying saucer horror film, but really, the quintessential one. It’s a difficult genre and hard to pull off because it’s got this huge canvas that you must take into account – the sky.” He says that Close Encounters of the Third Kind was a huge influence in its scope and in its vision, “but more than anything, in Steven Spielberg’s ability to make us feel like we’re in the presence of something from an- other world. That immersive experience was something I desperately wanted to chase as well. Within that genre, though, we often apply all these wonderful qualities to some ad- vanced alien civilization. But what if the truth is a lot simpler and darker than we even could ever imagine?” As with all Jordan Peele films, whatever you think Nope is going to be as you enter the the-

atre, you’re in for more than a few surprises. “The reason that we’re so withholding in our trailers and in our advertising materials is that we all secretly know that the most fun to be had is coming into something with less informa- tion,” producer Ian Cooper says. “Jordan de- signs movies that are the maximal fun if you’re not quite sure what you’re getting into.” Nope delves into deeper themes and ideas as it thrills, terrifies and entertains. The film is both a spectacle itself, and an examination of how spectacle shapes our culture and our ideas of ourselves. When the film’s central characters encounter this unexplained phenomenon in the skies around Haywood Ranch, each of them, for different reasons and different ways, is drawn to the pursuit of documenting this anomaly. “The DNA of the movie has this big question about the human addiction to spec- tacle,” Peele says. “And what happens when money becomes involved is that there’s this massive exploitation of what should be pure and what should be natural.” You’ll definitely never look at the sky the same way again. “Obviously, this is a horror movie, but it has a science-fictional conceit,” Cooper says. “It was really important for us to feel the balance and ensure that it felt more horror than science fiction. Early on, Jordan was say- ing, ‘I’m hopeful that people will look at clouds after this movie the way they looked at the sur- face of the ocean in Jaws.’ Even during film- ing, when we would have real clouds in the sky, you could imagine how unnerving it would be to have that phobia.” It’s also, on a pure entertainment level, just one hell of a fun ride. “ Nope was written dur- ing the pandemic in 2020,” Peele says. “It was this crazy time. In a lot of ways, the film is a re- flection of all the horrors that happened that year and are still happening.” As for the title, he says, “ Nope means a lot of things. I always love to get into the head of my audience. And I feel like there’s a lot of people that don’t want to see a horror movie and don’t want to see something that dark or that fucked up. Nope is an invitation to them, to sort of say, ‘Hey, I see you, and this movie will be scary, but at the very least, I’m bringing you in.” NOPE PREMIERES 11TH  CLICK TO SEE MORE
