THE POWER OF THE DOG WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY JANE CAMPION
The latest accomplishment fromDame Jane Campion – already an award-winner, and heralded as a contender for next year’s Academy Awards – The Power of the Dog was filmed in New Zealand, with a cast of A-listers lead by Benedict Cumberbatch as the severe but handsome Phil Burbank. The story follows Phil and his brother George who are wealthy ranchers in 1920s Montana. All of Phil’s charismatic power is inextricably tied to the past the land: he can castrate a calf with two swift slashes of his knife; he swims naked in the river, smearing his body with mud. He is a cowboy as raw as the hides he wears. When the brothers meet Rose, a widow, and her son Peter, Phil’s cruelty drives them both to tears – he revels in their hurt and rouses his fellow cowhands to laughter – all except his brother. When George and Rose marry, Phil swings between fury and cold cunning, his taunting of Rose takes a sinister turn, and his remorseless mockery of Peter is amplified by the cheering of his disciples. Then Phil appears to take the boy under his wing – but is this unexpected gesture a softening, or a plot twisting further into menace? Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Thomasin McKenzie. PREMIERES 11TH CLICK TO SEE MORE

DAME JANE CAMPION AN EYE ON THE PRIZE
One of the major projects filmed in New Zealand in 2020, The Power of the Dog marks Jane Campion’s return to feature film, and has inevitably attracted a serious Oscar buzz for both the director, and her lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch. Campion’s first film in over a decade, The Power of the Dog has been billed as a book- end to her 1993 Palme d’Or-winning drama, The Piano , in its portrait of caged sensuality and repression. However for the first time in Cam- pion’s career, the film’s protagonist is a man. Always driven by story, it was Campion’s re- sponse to Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel of the same name that saw her begin to develop the adaptation for film. It was a book that long haunted her, and when she began to reflect on a new project, her mind returned to the
story again and again. The phrase “the power of the dog” comes from the bible, Psalm 22:20: ‘Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog’. “The extraordinary thing about the psalm is how visceral and sav- age it is,” says Campion. “It’s a blistering psalm about passion in a very gutsy, animalistic way. The power of the dog is something to do with that sort of passion – an animal-inspired instinct that’s sexual and vicious and strong and dan- gerous.” With that in mind, she describes the deeply complex central character, a brilliant but cruel man, as one of the “all-time great characters of American fiction”.

FETISH, FASHION & FREEDOM HELMUT NEWTON
Writer Hélène Ravlich takes a closer look at Helmut Newton, and the latest documentary to shine a light on the iconic photographer Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful. Responsible for more than his share of contro- versy throughout the history of fashion photog- raphy, German shooter Helmut Newton and his legacy of boldly erotic imagery have fasci- nated generations. His nudes were less shock- ing than his fashion-meets-fetish escapades, and it is apparent from his early imagery that the photographer had a definite “type”. The Newton woman was Amazonian and pro- jected strength, and more often than not she was unapologetically nude. He regarded the men in his images as “accessories”, and other favourite props included cigarettes dripping in phallic symbolism, and butchers’ specialties POWER, FINANCIAL POWER, OR SEXUAL POWER, THEY ARE PRETTY GOOD SUBJECTS FOR MY CAMERA.” “WHAT INTERESTS ME IN MY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY IS POWER AND SEX. SEX & POWER. HOW SEX BEQUEATHS POWER. I THINKWHEN I TAKE PORTRAITS OF PEOPLE, WHO HAVE POLITICAL

his Jewish family were forced to weather the rise of Nazism. In 1938 the Newton family fled Germany, but not before the Aryan beauty standards and photography of Leni Riefen- stahl (the German film director, photographer, and actress, known for her seminal role in pro- ducing Nazi propaganda) left an indelible im- pression on the future artist. Eventually arriving in Australia where he would meet his long-time wife June, it has been said that Newton took the trauma of his upbringing and processed it through the confronting style that would make him a star. Once he settled in Paris his style became fully formed, and unabashedly sexy, like no other photographer at the time. It’s interesting that while many acclaimed fashion photographers now face a reckoning for their predatory behaviour, Newton is re- membered fondly as a gentle genius with a childlike penchant for mischief. Many of his top female subjects from the worlds of film and fashion have their say in the film, and gladly reinforce this notion. The likes of Claudia Schiffer, Grace Jones, Anna Wintour, Carla Sozzani and Charlotte Rampling recount the stories behind many of his famous – and infa- mous - images, describing a convivial artist whose true personality seems to run counter to the controversial persona generated by his works. Also included is his wonderful wife, June Newton, and more critically, activist Susan Sontag, in a memorable exchange on French television where she accuses him directly of being a misogynist. When Grace Jones de- scribes Newton as “a little bit perverse”, she immediately qualifies this observation by say- ing: “But so am I, so it’s okay.” Vogue’s Anna Wintour says she used his photographs as “a stopper” in her magazines because she knew they’d be powerful enough to stop readers from merely flicking through the pages. It’s clear that Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful ’s all-female cast list is very much by “I’M OBSESSED WITH CUTTING IMAGES OUT OF NEWSPAPERS... ONLY THE NEWS OR PAPARAZZI PHOTOS, THINGS THAT ARE REALLY INTENSE... I ALSO LOVE CRIME SHOWS. SOMETIMES I TAKE PICTURES OF SOMETHING I SEE ON TV ON MY SCREEN AT HOME...”
like chicken and raw meat. Followers of fash- ion from the swinging sixties onwards will be fa- miliar with his often imitated style: the aforementioned strong female figures in stylised scenes of eroticism, elements of the fetishistic pushing against social mores. Domi- nance and submission were recurring themes, but his narratives were suggestively open- ended. We may think we know all there is to know about Newton, but in Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful , we get to see his work through a very different lens. In the soon-to-be-released documentary, well- known author, journalist and director Gero von Boehm examines one of the photography world’s most provocative artists, through the eyes of the women who knew him best: those who lived with him, inspired him and un- dressed for his lens. And although he is up front about being a friend of Newton’s, he allows these women to tell their stories – and therein lies its charm. The film begins by recounting Newton’s early life in the decadent Weimar Republic before

design. “Why did I pick ten women? Because there were almost no statements from women about Helmut,”Von Boehm told an interviewer. “There were many brilliant scholarly essays by male journalists, male gallerists and male curators – and there were some anecdotes from [female] assistants he’d worked with – but I’d rarely heard women speak or write about him. So I thought: ‘Why not give carte blanche to women who really knew him well and had worked with him?’” The women von Boehm speaks with are at pains to emphasise that the snapper’s kink came with heaping servings of (very black) hu- mour. Though at one point in the film Newton says he never thinks about death, ingrained in him was an awareness of its closeness; he was Jewish and vividly remembers his escape from Germany while still a youth. “I grew up knowing that if you cross the street at a red traffic light, the Nazis can snap you up.” Newton’s lens was a portal to fetishistic and fictional fantasies, but it was also a protective barrier between the man and the world. There is a lot to be said about Newton’s photo- graphic practice and continuing influence on industry and the art world, but van Boehm has said that is not the film’s primary concern. In- stead, audiences are treated to an array of affectionate remembrances from those who wonderfully represent the look and ideals that so entranced the daring artist. Roger Ebert said it best when he wrote: “To know Helmut Newton was to know his work, and to know his work, you need to know the women who helped craft it”. And what fascinating women they are. “I LOVE VULGARITY. I AM VERY ATTRACTED BY BAD TASTE – IT IS A LOT MORE EXCITING THAN THAT SUPPOSED GOOD TASTE, WHICH IS NOTHING MORE THAN A STANDARDIZED WAY OF LOOKING AT THINGS.”

A satirical ‘anti-historical’ ride through 18th-century Russia following the wildly improbable rise of ‘Catherine the Nothing’ to ‘Catherine the Great’, in a chaotic, violent, sensual, odyssey, about the seemingly never-ending (albeit titillating) battle for power between the Empress Catherine and her husband Peter III. He wants bloodshed. She wants peace. He wants sex. She would rather choke on a tiny chicken. In Season 2, Catherine’s coup against Peter has reached a stalemate. However, organising a coup against her husband is nothing compared to liberating a country that doesn’t want liberation... Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Gillian Anderson.

DICK JOHNSON MAGIKWAYS WRITER HÉLÈNE RAVLICH TALKS TO THE DJ AND NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR FOR SYNTHONY NO.3 ABOUT FUTURE-PROOFING EVENTS IN THE AGE OF COVID
Now based in Auckland, UK-born DJ Dick ‘Magik’Johnson needs no introduction. The prodigious talent landed a residency at Manchester’s legendary Hacienda Club while still in his teens in the late 1980s, going on to hone his distinctive and much loved house sound until its closure in 1997. Before long he was producing tracks for Cream’s Olympic label, New Order’s Pleasure Recordings and Manchester’s Paper Recordings collective, and had set up his own record label, Shaboom, which went on to do over 100 releases from the likes of Joeski, Fred Everything, Doc Martin and DJ Sneak. As well as his own solo productions, Dick has remixed interna- tional artists like Fatboy Slim, Claude Von Stroke, Ian Pooley and Crazy P, as well as Kiwi artists L.A.B., Theia, The Naked & Fa- mous and Tiki Taane – to name but a few. His long standing, weekly George FM show is still one of the station’s most popu- lar, and had it not been for Covid-19, his dance card would still be full and seeing him behind the decks electrifying a crowd of dedicated followers around New Zealand and beyond. Never one to rest on his laurels however, Johnson is also the musical director for Synthony No.3 , a role which he was invited to assume in March of this year. The Synthony phenomenon began back in 2017 in Auckland, before quickly growing in popularity and going nationwide. Now owned by Duco Events, it combines the immersive joy of electronic dance music with a spectacular light and laser show as well as the richness of a full orchestra, for what has been billed as a “magical and up-

lifting dance party experience” that has to be experienced at least once to be believed. A very special collaboration between orchestra, DJs, live guest vocalists and stellar musicians, Synthony No.3 features some of the best-loved dance tracks of the last 30 years – and the crowds keep coming back for more. As musical director, Johnson chooses the set- list, which this year he has updated consider- ably from the usual format. “There is definitely still a place for the real club bangers that everyone wants to hear,” he explains, “but I’ve tweaked it a bit and included new classics from the early 2000s, as well as some new talent.” After selecting the tracks he wanted to include in the set, he then went into the studio to produce the whole shebang, re-doing beats and like before joining forces with Synthony No.3 ’s arranger, Ryan Youens. Amusic arranger and copyist with years of experience working with composers, ensembles, publishers and musicians all over the world, the uber- talented Youens has produced music for the likes of the London Metropolitan Orchestra, Budapest Scoring Orchestra, Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra and Sydney SYNTHONY Orchestra; and also on movies such as The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug . Johnson calls Youens

doesn’t seem like there’s an end in sight. It’s so hard to make any kind of plan, no matter how much you try”. He adds that he has been lucky in that he spends a lot of his time in music production, “so I can go into my studio and still get work done. I’m missing events so much though, and I really feel for big promoters like the guys behind Rhythm & Vines who need to be finalising things now and just don’t know whether they’re coming or going”. At time of writing all three upcoming Synthony shows have been shifted to 2022, and the team’s fingers remain crossed all round. With everything so up in the air right now, what kind of logistics have to be managed when dates like Synthony ’s are suddenly upended? “Oh, so many,” says Johnson wearily. “Avail- ability of venue, sound tech guys, the talent and most definitely the orchestra, who are often booked up quite far in advance. There is so much to put in place for the whole thing to happen.” When asked what he sees the future of events like Synthony and festivals looking like, the DJ and producer refers to the situation in his home country of the UK, “where it’s a bit of a free-for-all and there are still thousands of cases a day, but hospitalisations are dropping. The vaccines work no question about it, so perhaps we’ll have to have a vaccination passport for a while – even if it’s just to get us through summer”. Johnson adds that he is most definitely freedom of choice when it comes to the individual, “but people need to feel safe when they go out, and vaccinations right now are a key part of that”. “a classically trained, mega nerd, genius”, who takes what the DJ has created and or- chestrates it. “He keeps the melodies while creating new parts that work with those melodies across a sixty piece orchestra,” explains Johnson, “before I then de-construct the whole thing to ensure that it will work in an arena setting.” Johnson then chooses addi- tional musicians and singers to add to the vibe, before he mixes everything so that it flows well on the night. “The great thing about it all is that unlike a band, we don’t require too much rehearsal time. The orchestra gets the score literally the night before, they are just incredible to watch.” Johnson says that even if you’re not a fan of the Synthony genre of music, “this experience takes those tracks to a whole new place where they have a new life of their own. There is still a real festival-type vibe on the night, but the tracks develop into completely different, beautiful pieces of music that you can’t help but be swept away by.” Inevitably, talk turns to the pandemic, and the dire straits that are affecting the events world. As someone who has spent the better part of their life in the entertainment industry, the usu- ally upbeat Johnson says that quite honestly, “it’s hard to see a way out right now, there just
