THE FRENCH DISPATCH DIRECTED BYWES ANDERSON

A love letter of sorts to The New Yorker magazine, and to the art of journalism, set in an outpost of a fictional American publication based in a fictional twentieth century French city. On the occasion of the death of its beloved founder and editor Arthur Howitzer Jr., the eccentric staff of The French Dispatch – a widely circulated magazine based in the French city of Ennui-sur-Blasé – convenes to write his obituary for what will be the final issue of the magazine. Memories of Howitzer flow into the creation of four stories: a travelogue of the seediest sections of the city itself from The Cycling Reporter; “The Concrete Masterpiece,” about a criminally insane, genius painter, his prison guard and muse, and his ruthless art dealer; “Revisions to a Manifesto,” a chronicle of love and death on the barricades at the height of a youth rebellion (a pantomime of the defining 1968 student protests in Paris); and “The Private Dining Room of the Police Commissioner”, a suspenseful tale of drugs, kidnapping, death threats, and fine dining. Each story is told in its own style, shifting from colour to black & white, embelished with illustration and animation. The landscape is inhabited by a star-encrusted cast, featuring familiar and new faces including: Bill Murray, Benicio Del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Léa Seydoux, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, Owen Wilson, Elisabeth Moss, Henry Winkler, and more. WES ANDERSON THE LIFE AESTHETIC

Wes Anderson’s distinctive visual and narrative style is instantly recognisable with his highly specific aesthetic and catalogue of filmmaking quirks. Over the years his films have become increasingly complex, more excitingly varied, and alive in the richness of detail packed into every frame. There’s a kind of presentational quality to Anderson’s work – the heightened lighting, the rich colours, the precise framing, the pleasing symmetry – almost as if it’s theatre on film, but at the same time it’s always very much a cinematic experience. His films tell poignant stories that are unexpectedly funny, and even more unexpectedly moving, set in eccentric worlds populated with an ever-expanding gallery of familiar (and famous) faces. Anderson is an auteur in the true sense of the word – the writer-director and visionary storyteller behind a continuous string of critically acclaimed and award-winning6 films, such as The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Isle of Dogs (2018), and this year The French Dispatch , around which there is already Oscar-themed talk. Discussing this latest film in an interview with IndieWire , composer Alexandre Desplat, long time collaborator for this and many of Anderson’s films, called it the most ambitious thing the director had ever done, “maybe even bigger than The Grand Budapest Hotel . More stories, different locations, and so many ideas in every shot. So many!”

MARY QUANT FASHION REVOLUTIONARY

An international exhibition exploring the work of legendary fashion designer Mary Quant is set to open at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Ta¯maki this month, defying a pandemic and bringing a slice of Swinging Sixties London to a pandemic-battered City of Sails. Here from the V&A in London, Mary Quant: Fashion Revolutionary takes a look at the fashion icon who harnessed the youthful spirit of the sixties and em- braced new mass production techniques to create a new look for modern women. A look into Mary Quant World if you will, the sprawling show will examine the fashion revolutionary’s influence on the youthquake of the 1960s, through an exhibition that cleverly ex- plores Quant’s transformative effect on the freshly- minted fashion scene. Famously modelled by Twiggy, Grace Coddington and more, Mary Quant’s clothes personified the energy and fun of swinging London, and Quant be- came a powerful role model for the working woman. Challenging conventions, she is known as the face of the mini-skirt and popularising colourful tights and tai- lored trousers – encouraging a new age of feminism. Inspiring young women to rebel against traditional dress worn by their mothers and grandmothers, Quant played an essential role in encouraging women to break from what went before, and it’s an attitude that can still be felt by young designers today. Curator, International Art, Dr Sophie Matthies- son, there is a sense of palpable relief in her voice as the exhibition’s opening date looms. The show opened first at the V&A in London and then went on to the V&A in Dundee where it had incredible success, before trav- elling to the other side of the world, where it’s been wowing visitors to Bendigo Art Gallery in Australia between March and July. “It was of- fered to the incoming director of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Ta¯maki, Kirsten Lacy shortly after she arrived back in 2019,” explains Matthies- son, “and we had no idea that Covid would come into the picture back then. These type of shows are so finely balanced. They are ex- tremely ambitious and expensive things to stage, so when a pandemic hits it’s really kind of nerve wracking stuff.” When asked if it has been a bit touch and go at times with the lengthy lockdown and ongo- ing disruptions, the curator agrees, saying: “Absolutely. You’re having to consider when you can get the public in to see an exhibition, what will happen if you have to close it pre- maturely... People were definitely on the edge of their seats at Bendigo because it was such a big deal for a regional gallery to put some- thing like that on”. And now it comes to Auck- land, “and we really thought this whole Covid situation would be done and dusted by now. It’s taken a while, and a lot of brains coming together, to stage a show with a lot of social distancing involved, including when it comes to our crews during the installation phase. It will truly be a triumph when it finally opens!” A veritable feast for the eyes for fashion fans, Matthiesson tells me that there are over 350 works in the show, “ranging from a makeup purse to a full outfit. There are around seventy complete looks on mannequins that include shoes and hats and all of the accessories, but also newspaper clippings, cosmetics, sun- glasses, ephemera... all of the trimmings re- ally”. It truly is the story of an entire brand as Mary Quant moved outwards from just designing clothes, “and we are getting a true slice of her full spectrum of invention as she designed from the smallest to the largest”. She adds that Quant was designing a whole new way of life for women, hence the tag “Fashion Revolutionary”. The experience of the show will be via a wind

ing pathway through ten rooms of Mary Quant creations, with twenty different themes to explore. “It’s really a story told in a chrono- logical order,” says the curator, “and there is a natural path to follow. We are hoping that the spaces are large enough that they can soak up people easily, so you can really get lost in your own world with Mary Quant as the story unfolds.” She adds that the aim is for every visitor to “emerge from the show having been in a completely absorbing, other world. There are so many different corners and hair- pin bends as you go through, moving into each new era of Mary Quant design”. As you travel through time you gain a better under- standing of fashion, and the mark that Quant left on the post-war modern world. Matthiesson talks about how much of Quant’s style is still felt today, “especially when you look at leisurewear and sportswear. Mannequins from the late sixties and early seventies are wearing fabrics like Lycra and Terry Towelling and velour, which were being used for the first time in the world of fashion”. It’s safe to say that many style pundits will also be spotting

stylistic elements constantly being reinvented over the years by other designers, such was Quant’s influence on women’s fash- ion as a whole. When asked if she has a favourite element from the show, Matthiesson immediately names a series of rain garments that Quant designed for a waterproof manufacturer called Alligator. “It includes colourful capes made from shiny PVC that sort of turn you into a beautiful coloured blob in the landscape, which against the background of an English winter would have looked extraordinary. I imagine people looking like huge colourful pop- pies floating around in a very grey part of the year, they were purely designed with fun in mind. There are even boots to match so you can go splashing around in puddles like a big kid!” When asked who she thinks the exhibition will appeal to beyond fashion fans, Matthiesson says that the audience will be far reaching and come from all walks of life. “I think it will of course appeal to fashion fans, but also to those who love nostalgia and the late Sixties era of movies and music which Quant cre- ated the look for. Those who appreciate modern, crisp design will also take away a lot from it, and those that appreciate the fun and glamour that comes along with everything she did.” When it comes to events planned around the exhibition, the curator says: “we have a huge schedule of events that will be announced and rolled out as the traffic light system unfolds. We have so many scenarios they can work within, so keep an eye on our social media for details.” “The show will definitely go on – and it promises to be a real highlight at the end of two very difficult years.”

Eva Orner is a woman that doesn’t shy away from turning a light on the darker side of hu- manity. Based in Los Angeles since 2003, her work is threaded with themes of social justice, human rights, and now, environmental issues. A producer, director and writer, she won an Academy Award for Taxi to the Dark Side (2008), about the US policy on torture following 9/11, and also produced and directed 2016’s riveting Chasing Asylum , on Australia’s treat- ment of refugees and asylum seekers. More recently, Orner has tackled yet another pressing problem in her native country: climate change, focusing on Australia’s ‘Black Summer’ of 2019 when bushfires burned 59 million acres, destroying over 5,900 buildings and enveloped Sydney in clouds of smoke. Even by today’s standards the footage is astonishing, with flames reaching over 60 metres high, creating new weather patterns of pyro-convective storms that shocked the most seasoned fire

fighters. Called Burning , it follows Orner as she descends on locations including Kangaroo Island and the bushfire-ravaged country towns of Mallacoota and Cobargo, asking the ques- tion: why did nobody in Australian government listen when former fire commissioner Greg Mullins sounded the alarm months earlier? In April 2019, Mullins wrote to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, warning of an “unprecedented dis- aster”. He received no response. Burning aims to pinpoint the bigger issue – how Australia has failed to confront the bur- geoning problem of climate change. Execu- tive produced by Cate Blanchett’s Dirty Films – the power pair met when they were the only two Australians nominated at the Academy Awards in 2008 – the film is told through con- versations with a range of voices, including Mullins, scientist and author Tim Flannery, youth activist Daisy Jeffrey and tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes. There are clear villains in the film: Australia being the main one, closely followed by Rupert Murdoch and bum- bling Prime Minister Scott Morrison. When I speak to Orner she has been isolating at home after being exposed to an active Covid case on set, a regular occurrence as the world learns to live with the virus, but one that has hitherto not affected her work. As well

as wrapping Burning in August, she has multi- ple projects in production and has just finished a series. “I desperately need a holiday!” she says with a laugh, and I can believe it. A recent trip to the Glasgow Climate Summit involved a screening of Burning , “which was kind of amazing,” says the filmmaker, albeit fleeting. She admits that she was definitely preaching to the converted in this instance, saying “there were definitely no oil execs there. But it was interesting timing as I was there in the second week, whenAustralia’s appalling record when it came to climate change had really been exposed to many who had no idea. It definitely filled in a lot of holes for them”. She adds that “Australia was a pariah and Scott Morrison proved to be a bit of a buffoon, we were lumped in with the climate villains with good reason”. She said she had some interest- ing conversations with politicians and non- politicians alike, “and with policy wonks and heads of industry that were trying to do better, and some who were doing well. I think to work in that sort of role you have to be an optimist, and although I think I’m a realist, they were definitely calling me a pessimist! My job is to tell it like it is, and climate change is a pretty dark story with a terrible outcome at this point”. In Burning there is a focus on the next genera-

tion of climate activists, like the aforementioned Daisy Jeffrey, of which there were many in Glasgow. Does she see the future of the planet literally lying in their hands? “I see Daisy as the Aus- tralian Greta Thunberg, a young woman who has spent the last two years of her time in high school rallying students and organ- ising protests,” says Orner, “but I’m acutely aware that more and more, we are putting pressure on these young people to save us. They probably will if anyone will, and I kind of love it when Daisy says in the film that it’s not her job to give older adults hope.” She adds that it “kind of breaks my heart that kids like Daisy and Greta can’t just be kids, but have to spend all of their time fighting stupid governments who betray them”. The film includes heart breaking images from Black Summer , as well as footage from the 1970s when fighting fires was defi- nitely all hands on deck as the bush began to burn. How did the filmmaker strike that fine balance between not putting off more sensitive viewers with shocking and distressing scenes, but also ensuring that the severity of the situation was most acutely felt? How did she steer clear of ‘disaster porn’, for want of a better phrase. “It’s always a challenge,” says the documentary maker with a wry grin, “and who knows if it will pay off? We re- ally wanted to avoid fire porn, but it’s hard because you have to capture fear and shock people to some extent, so that they are compelled to act.” Orner says that every person and every location in the film is there intentionally, “and the idea with any film is to have it mo- tivated by story and character for a good progression. Burning is not an easy film to watch but I think it’s a really important film to watch, and I haven’t had anyone tell me that they wished they hadn’t seen it. It’s made them angry which is a good thing, as that will hopefully inform the way that they vote. That is the most important thing right now.” She talks about the activists and ordinary people in the filmwho know how bad the situation is but are determined not to give up. She cites the likes of young billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, “who is putting a lot of his own money and time into developing renewables. He is completely against the current administration in Australia and their policies, and is seeing business and community leading the way. Now it’s up to the government to catch up with us, and that won’t happen until it changes”. As Orner sets out to confront the crisis we can no longer ignore, she stresses the importance of creating films like Burning that don’t hold back from telling the ugly truth. “I think there really is a need for tough films. We’re at a crisis point with climate and making a soft film about it is kind of irrelevant at this point.
