MEET JEAN-PAUL, PHYSIOTHERAPIST, PORT HOPE CLINICAL MANAGER

Jean-Paul (J.P.) grew up in Northumberland County and left after high school to complete his education in Kinesiology and Physical Therapy at McGill University and D’Youville College respectively. He has represented our local communities in volleyball, soccer and hockey at OFSAA , the Ontario Cup and OMHA finals and continued with athletics in Montreal where he captained McGill to CIS Bronze and Silver finishes in 2002 and 2004. J.P. moved home 4 years ago, with his wife Adrienne, after working across North America as a travelling Physical Therapist to raise their two children, Noah (4) and Zoey (2). He has always brought knowledge, skill and passion to whatever he endeavours to accomplish and he is now taking a leadership role as Director of Physical Therapy at We-Fix-U’s Port Hope location. The past two and a half years, J.P. has been working with our strong team of Regulated Health Professionals to create a clinic environment that promotes overall wellness, health and fitness. His strength is assessing the root cause of your pain or mobility issue and communicating with you so that you know ‘why’ you are doing the homework he has prescribed. J.P. recognizes that you need to address the bigger picture including the relationship between the biological, psychological and social aspects of your life. He prefers an active approach which includes mindfulness education, listening to music (we take requests), dancing, singing and, of course, exercise. While some causes are more severe than others, a a WFU health care practitioner can identify each. As the body ages, joints become inflamed. We appreciate our customers! On Saturday June 16th, our Port Hope clinic located on Toronto Rd (Pineview plaza) participated in a Customer Appreciation Event with other plaza business owners. In association with the Electric Juice Factory, we provided our patrons with a sample of the Electric Juice Factory’s freshly pressed juice. LOWBACK PAIN&GOLFINGWITH DR. DAVID BLAIR

Summer is finally here, bringing with it some much needed warmweather. With the golf season already underway, I am getting lots of patients coming in with low back pain after golf. It is my goal to keep everyone out on the course as often as they can! Low back pain can become nagging and chronic if the underlying issue is not dealt with. I am far from a golf pro but I do work with them on a regular basis and the BIGGEST cause of low back pain in golfers comes from a swing characteristic known as “reverse spine angle.” If in your back swing your head is closer to the target than your hips, then it is difficult for your lower body to start the downswing (figure 1). This causes a decrease in power, an increase in slicing the ball and most importantly puts excessive tension on the low back due to inhibited abdominals and gluteal muscles. This creates excessive compressive loads on the lower right (for a right handed golfer) side of the spine at impact. How do I know if this is me? Take a video or picture of your swing head on and if at any point your trunk is leading towards your target, this is a reverse spine angle. How do I fix it? Check your pelvic tilting ability as well as your thoracic spine mobility. If you can address the ball and still

stick your butt out OR tuck your butt under your hips, this shouldn’t be the issue- check your T-spine. Lying on your side with your knees bent, see if you can rotate your upside arm to the ground behind you (fig. 2). If either of these are limited or don’t feel quite right- come in for a complimentary functional screen or book a Chiropractic Assessment.

HIP HIKES While standing up on a step, lower one leg downward towards the floor by tilting your pelvis to the side. Then return the pelvis/leg back to a leveled position. Repeat 6 times on each side. Try this movement if you are experiencing hip pain.

KNEE EXTENSION STRETCH While sitting, tighten your top thigh muscle to press the back of your knee downward towards the ground.

WE-FIX-U CAN TREAT YOUR BUNIONS

When dealing with feet, it seems no other word conjures up gross images faster than “bunion”. In reality though, bunions are no more than a simple misalignment of one of the body’s most important joints. Yes, the side effects of having a bunion can yield some gross-looking conditions, but a bunion itself is a lot less cringe-worthy. Bunions, or what we call “Hallux Abducto-valgus (HAV)” when we want to sound smart, can be described as a rotational dislocation of the big toe joint. It’s a pretty complex process, but simply think of it as the big toe leaning towards the second toe, making the big toe joint protrude from the side of the foot. This joint is a work-horse: when working properly it handles more than 3/4 of your body weight each time you take a step, so any change in its function or position can have a significant impact on the body. Pain can result from the joint that now bends a little more awkwardly with each step, resulting in strain on the soft tissues surrounding the joint, and on the cartilage within the joint, eventually wearing down to cause arthritis. Pain can also be caused by the now-widened foot being squeezed into less-than-perfect footwear, causing the “gross stuff”: callus, corns, blisters, or in severe cases, ulceration and infections. Causes of bunions are mainly mechanical. Foot function is by far the main culprit. Any imperfections in foot mechanics, which can be due to many reasons, can eventually lead to a bunion formation; excess force applied to the side of joint over time is what gradually forms the bunion. The more significant the underlying problem is, the faster the bunion can develop. Yes, footwear does play a role in a bunion development, but typically the underlying mechanical faults are still there. Not everyone who wears pointed- or narrow-toed shoes develops a bunion.

Surgery is not the best option, and Chiropodists typically only recommend this as a last resort. This is because surgery can improve the alignment of a joint cosmetically, but doesn’t deal with the underlying cause, so the problem can return. Surgery may also compromise the mobility of the joint, leading to other potentially worse problems down the road. Treatment by a chiropodist involves symptom relief, such as dealing with corns, callus, or blisters, and then addressing the underlying mechanical problems to improve joint function and slow the progression of the condition. Evaluation of foot structure and function is vital in determining whether footwear, exercises, stretches, orthotics, referral to a physiotherapist, or any combination of these treatments is necessary.
