Monroe County Community School Corporation

On behalf of the Board of School Trustees and Administrative Team, I hope you have had a rewarding and memorable summer. We thank you for an exemplary 2017-2018 school year! We continue to make school safety a top priority. In addition to the many safety protocols, plans and procedures, we have limited controlled access points, buzzer access for patrons, a corporation resource office and security officers. Since the most recent school shootings we have completed the following; • Public District-wide safety forums were held • School focused safety forums were conducted • Transportation Department conducted active shooter training • Staff are located at school entrances upon student arrival and dismissal • All schools will have limited access card readers for staff • School front entrances are being redesigned where possible to direct visitors to the office • A major grant award to emphasize social emotional learning was received • Three addition social workers are being added for social emotional well-being • A part-time clinical psychologist will be added for social emotional well-being • An additional nurse will be added to serve students’ needs • An additional resource office will be added to serve students’ needs • The Bloomington Police Department and Sheriff ’s Department officers have been given access cards for every building to expedite entry • Secondary Principals and Athletic Directors met to insure documentation of required training for coaches and extracurricular activities along with safety communication to parents. • Stop the Bleed training will be offered for additional staff. • Emergency trailer for reunification sites was equipped • Indiana School Safety Specialist training for additional staff • Study the Governor’s scanner program. We will take input regarding the Governor’s scanner program at a Community Conversation onTuesday, July 31 at the Co-Lab beginning at 6:00 p.m. We appreciate all of your dedication and efforts to keep our students and staff safe.

Over the 2017-2018 school year, we have celebrated many achievements of students and staff. Listed below are a few of the highlights which make MCCSC a leader in Indianan education. We congratulate and thank you for all we accomplished! WE ARE PROUD TO BE MCCS C!

• MCCSC is an Indiana Department of Education “A” School Corporation. • MCCSC was recognized as an International Model Professional Learning Community. • MCCSC became a Common Sense Certified District: Digital Citizenship corporation. • MCCSC was awarded a $1,000,000 Lilly Grant for Social Emotional Learning.

• We built an Early Learning Center for children 6-weeks through pre-school. • An Elementary pilot band program was established for 6th grade students in 2017-18 and will be open to all 6th grade elementary students in this year. • Binford, Childs, University, and Bloomington South were named Four Star Schools. • Childs, Templeton and University Elementary achieved International Baccalaureate designation. • Clear Creek and Summit instituted a Spanish Dual Immersion program. • Unionville began an E.A.R.T.H curriculum. • Childs “Kiley” an Indiana Canine Assistant Network therapy dog, began school. • We hosted the 2ndAnnual Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science (GEMS) Career and STEM Expo. • Our 1st Maker Mill Challenge and Showcase for fourth grade students was held with Grandview Elementary winning the overall award. • Our Career Center, HHCC offered the first Dementia Friendly Certification. • TheAcademy of Science and Entrepreneurship achieved recognition as an IDOE Full STEM Certified School. • Bloomington North and South were once again recognized at the 2018 Indiana Advanced Placement reception for having at least 25% of the graduating class cohort earning a score of 3 or higher on at least one AP exam. • Bloomington North and South were once again recognized at the 2018 Indiana Advanced Placement reception for having at least 25% of the graduating class cohort earning a score of 3 or higher on at least one AP exam. • We graduated twelve National Merit Finalists, ten National Merit Scholars, two Lilly Scholars, one Indiana University Wells Scholar, one Coca-Cola Scholar, forty-five Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars, twenty-two AP Scholar Honors, sixteen AP Scholars with Distinction and one National AP Scholar. • We began the process to reimagine Tri-NorthMiddle School . • We completed an intense paving and transportation access plans at Lakeview, Clear Creek, Arlington, Marlin, Highland Park, Batchelor, Bloomington North and South.

• Indiana Association of School Principals honored eight MCCSC juniors as the 2018 Rising Stars of Indiana for their academic achievement, • Bloomington South Chemistry teacher, Ms. Cindy Kvale is the first woman in the Indiana District to be named a Woodie Flowers Finalist from the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) organization. • Childs Elementary Spanish teacher, Ms. Gabriela Coolidge was selected as the 2017 Indiana Spanish Teacher Rising Star by the Indiana Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association Corporation Meeting at Bloomington High School South(AATSP). • Six MCCSCTeachers receive Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowships: Ms. Angela Cannon, Ms. Natasha Roe, Ms. Elizabeth Sweeney, Ms. Sheila McDermott-Sipe, Mr. Joshua Livingston, and Ms. Amie Easton. • Binford Elementary music teacher, Ms. Lisa Zorn was named the 2 017-2018 Indiana Elementary Music Teacher of the Year by the Indiana Music Education Association • Fairview Elementary art teacher, Dr. Roy Reynolds was awarded 2017 E lementary School Art Educator of the Year award by the Art Education Association of Indiana (AEAI). • Bloomington South science teacher, Dr. Kirstin Milks received an Alumni Excellence in EducationAward from Stanford’s Graduate School of Education. • Bloomington South teacher, Ms. Paula Watkins was recognized as the STEMTeacher of the Year by the local chapter of the Air Force Association. • Bloomington North teacher, Ms. Diane Davis-Deckard received the CommunityArts Awards for Arts in Education from Ivy Tech Community College’s 2017 Community Arts Awards • Grandview Elementary teacher, Mr. Eddie Pierce was selected as a 2017-2018 Regional Opportunity Initiatives (ROI) STEM Fellow. • Grandview Elementary teacher, Mrs. Katy Sparks was selected to the Indiana Department of Education STEM Council. • Jackson Creek teacher, Mr. Luke Chanley was recognized for Exemplary Economics Teaching by the Indiana Council for Economic Education. • HHCCDirector , Christi McBride was honored with a 2018 Women Excel BloomingtonAward by The Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce.

2018 MCCSC SUMMER PROGRAMHIGHLIGHTS

The 2018 MCCSC Summer Programs served over 1300 students. We are so very fortunate to be able to offer the many opportunities for continued learning during the summer months. We thank our Administrators and staff for their service to our students and families. A special THANK YOU to Principal Colglazier, Principal Fletcher, Assistant Principal Gobert and the staff at Fairview and Bloomington South, EdVenture camp staff, Mrs. Hattie Johnson, food services and custodian staff for supporting our students.

The Monroe County Community School Corporation and Board of School Trustees announce the opening of the newest learning facility, the Early Learning Center. An open house and ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Tuesday, July 24, 2018.

The MCCSC Early Learning Center provides a dynamic and nurturing environment for children, 6- weeks through 4-years of age, that encourages creativity, self-discovery, and independence. Licensed by the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) the Early Learning Center will use the MCCSC Preschool Curriculum which promotes discovery, exploration, play-based learning, academic success, respect, responsibility, and self-worth. “The MCCSC continues to meet the needs of our community with the addition of a quality childcare center for our youngest learners. Registration has been tremendous as the Early Learning Center is nearing capacity. We are excited to open our doors to the community, parents and our youngest learners to see our new Early Learning Center.”- Dr. Judith DeMuth, Superintendent
