ONE TRIP FOR THE BOY SCOUTS JAMBOREE STARTED OFF WITH A BANG August 2022

Camping season is in full swing this month. Growing up, I took various camping trips because I was in Boy Scouts. It was a great way to connect with other troops, improve and learn new skills, and create memories. But there is one trip I will never forget. I guess you could say it started with a BANG! Every four years, the Boy Scouts of America has a National Scout jamboree where several troops come together for a couple of days to participate in games and camp. One year, we camped at an old military base. Each night, after all of our daily activities, all of the troops would spread out across the base, pitch tents, cook food, and have a campfire. Imagine over a few thousand Scouts, leaders, and staff members scattered around the base. Nothing could go wrong … right? Well, on the second night of our trip, our Scout leaders left for meetings. I stayed asleep in my tent until the sound of two people arguing woke me up. Their voices were muffled because of the fire, so I decided to investigate. But when I exited my tent, I found my two friends, Joel and Brandon, by the campfire getting pretty heated (no pun intended). Joel said the white gas we use to fuel our camping stoves wouldn’t cause an eruption if he poured it on the fire. Brandon argued the opposite — that it would cause an outbreak. They continued with this for a while. Then, Joel reached for the gas can. It was like a slow-motion scene from a movie. As soon as Joel threw the gas into the fire, we were all diving for cover. When the can left his hand, all you heard was a rupturing and ear-ringing BOOM! "Imagine over a few thousand Scouts, leaders, and staff members scattered around the base. Nothing could go wrong … right?"

Once the debris and fire somewhat settled, we checked the area for any damage. One of our troop tents had completely disintegrated! The poles were the only items left. Thankfully, no one was severely injured … well, except for Joel. His eyebrows were burnt off, and he burnt some of his hair. His hairline now went three finger-widths farther back. Remember how I said we were on a former military base? Yeah, a military helicopter flew over us, casting its floodlights to see what happened. We didn’t get in trouble with them, but our Scout leaders weren’t too happy. We all worried they’d punish us, but it wasn’t like we were tempting and persuading Joel to throw the gas can in the fire! Although our leaders got mad, it was one of those times when we applied the punishment to ourselves. Joel lost half of his hair, and we didn’t have the fuel to use our stoves for food. We had to beg other troops to let us borrow some. However, we weren’t allowed to go camping again — and rightfully so! Despite the dangerous event during the jamboree, it was a memorable time. I heard the “F” word for the first time in my life, and I now know that white gas is, in fact, flammable!

Walking or Jogging Taking a stroll around the neighborhood or a few laps around the park can help build stamina, strengthen lower body muscles, and help fight against bone diseases like osteoporosis. If you want to sweat it out some more, jogging might be a great alternative. But remember to be kind to your joints: Walk at a pace you’re comfortable with, wear supportive shoes, take breaks as needed, and walk on soft surfaces, like tracks or grass.
