6 BACK CONDITIONS NOT TO IGNORE “Continue An Active Lifestyle Free Of Pain!” INSIDE: • Will Your Back Hurt As You Get Older? • Think PT First

4. Lumbar sprain/strain: This is a common cause of low back pain due to injury of muscles and tendons. The rows of muscles that run up and down the sides of the spinal column, are the major muscle groups usually involved in lower back injury. 5. Fractures: These are due to trauma, or sometimes occur without any injury in people with osteoporosis. 6. Spinal cord compression: This is unusual, but very worrisome and may be associated with weakness and loss of bowel/bladder control. Medication and Bed Rest. Most lower back pain sufferers try over the counter drugs and bed rest. However, most self remedies will not provide the relief that you need. In fact, bed rest is the wrong thing to do because it can weaken the spinal muscles further. Weakness in the spinal muscles is one of the main reasons for low back pain and puts you at risk for injuring your back with common activities such as lifting, bending or squatting. Most of us sit too much and this contributes to severe weakening of the back and torso muscles which are needed for a healthy back.
Do you feel aches and pains in your lower back? If so, you are not alone. Four out of every five Americans will suffer from back pain at some time in their lives. Without proper spine mobility, stability and alignment your back structures wear down over time, similar to tires that are out of alignment. There are many different back conditions, but here are a few common ones: 1. Lumbar or sacral radiculopathy: The result of pressure on a nerve exiting the spine. Pain, numbness and tingling can be felt down in different parts of the leg. 2. Sciatica: This comes from compression of the sciatic nerve by a muscle called the piriformis, deep in the buttock. Symptoms can radiate down the buttock and leg. 3. Spinal stenosis: This is a narrowing of the bony spinal canal which causes rubbing or pressure on nerves. Central canal stenosis is quite serious as it presses upon the spinal cord.

I would 100% recommend this clinic if you are needing physical therapy in your life.. “This was my first time in physical therapy, and I am beyond glad that I went this route after my injury. Brooke Carmen was my physical therapist, and she was amazing. In the weeks that I saw her for my IT band syndrome, she got me back to running with zero residual symptoms. Not only this, but the exercises, stretches, and physical evaluations she gave me have given me a strong base that I have integrated in my workout routine to strengthen and improve my form. I would 100% recommend this clinic if you are needing physical therapy in your life. This was a complete game changer for me and got me back to full capacity in my workouts. I am for sure on Team Whole Body Health.” – Victoria B.
Kim recently attended two courses geared at physical therapy best practices for pre- and post-partum clients. The courses covered topics ranging from common orthopedic impairments during pregnancy to managing high risk pregnancy and other medical conditions that can onset during pregnancy. Kim is working towards achieving her CAPP OB certification through the approval of her case reflection that she submitted in May 2018. Below is a description of what is required to obtain this certification: • The Section on Women´s Health (SOWH) has developed the Certificate of Achievement in Pregnancy and Postpartum Physical Therapy (CAPP-OB) to certify that a physical therapist has completed a comprehensive education, training, and testing program. • The CAPP is awarded to physical therapists who complete two courses of training in pregnancy and postpartum physical therapy, pass written and clinical testing requirements at each level, and successfully complete a written case report. Some of the major highlights of the course content were the following: 1. Women with low back pain during pregnancy are 3 times more likely to have post-partum depression. 2. There is evidence to show that women perform a kegel better when under supervision of a professional who is trained in pelvic health (i.e. a PT). 3. Women who perform kegels correctly during pregnancy have significantly less urinary incontinence post-partum. 4. Urinary incontinence post-partum is not normal and is an impairment. There is strong scientific evidence showing that physical therapy is an effective treatment for incontinence. 5. Women who performdiastasis rectus exercises during pregnancy have significantly less diastasis rectus post-partum. 6. Both kegels and diastasis rectus exercises can be performed as tolerated immediately after birthing the child to facilitate rehabilitation of these muscles and reduce the risk of both incontinence and diastasis. 7.The majority of women (around 60%) receive little to no education about what is normal (regarding pain and incontinence) during pregnancy and post-partum. 8. All women should be evaluated by a physical therapist approximately 6 to 8 weeks after birthing their child to assess the function of the pelvic diaphragm muscles and abdominal muscles and develop a plan to reduce post-partum complication.
