March is Women’s History Month and this year we’re looking back at some of CSHL WiSE’s activities over the past year to support Women in STEM both at CSHL and in the local community.

CSHL 4th Annual IHER Our former Chair of In House Education, Connor Fitzpatrick organized a hybrid In House Education Retreat on November 13th with Keynote lectures from the amazing Dr. Banu Subramaniam and Dr. Janet Abbate. They discussed how culture influences science and how gender influences the shape of career paths in science with our attendees. Introducing…. Real Humans of CSHL

Last year we introduced a new social media series ‘Real Humans of CSHL’ - inspired by the Humans of NY social media project and adapted for CSHL by Rhonda Drewes - in which we learn about the careers and stories of women scientists and support staff at the lab and how they contribute to the lab.

Our first featured woman was Hillside Building Manager Amy Brady in our October 29th post. In our interview we asked about her grandmother’s work at CSHL, what she would want to do if she could do anything else, who the most influential person in her life is and about her career and current role at the lab. The

Spotlight on Mental Health In 2021 we hosted many mental health focused events for the CSHL community. We also featured a Tip-a-Day series on twitter in the month of May to offer mental health tips to scientists. Our event “Ask Us Anything” was held on February 24th 2021, a Mental Health event featuring a panel discussion with Dr. Molly Hammell and Dr. Jessica Tollkuhn and moderated by Kat Denney and Connor Fitzpatrick on topics related to trainee mental health and

Science Cafes Last year we hosted 10 science cafes with local groups of young women in which CSHL scientists discussed their careers in science. mentor/mentee relationships. We also hosted our 3rd annual "Open Mic Night" on October 26, 2021, a hybrid event moderated by Chair of Mental Health Kat Denney in which brave students, postdocs and faculty shared their stories with the group.

Fun With DNA DNALC Camp Last year we continued our collaboration with the CSHL DNA Learning Center for the WiSE Fun with DNA camp. Campers got to

participate in fun activities to learn about aneuploidy, gene regulation, neuroscience and more. Thank you to Amber Habowski, Alexa Pagliaro, Asad Lakhani, Matt Moss and Danielle Ciren for leading the activities and giving the girls a tour of campus.

McClintock Lectures In 2021 and 2022 we hosted 3 amazing speakers for our McClintock Lectures. Every year, in honor of CSHL scientist and Nobel Laureate, Barbara McClintock, 2 slots in the CSHL Lab-wide Seminar Series are reserved for prominent women scientists. In 2021 we hosted Dr. Miriam Merad and Dr. Joan Brugge and earlier this year we hosted Dr. Sarah A. Tishkoff. We are grateful all three women were able to meet with our trainees to discuss their perspectives on being a woman in science. Our next McClintock lecture will be with Akiko Iwasaki on April 7th.
