It’s been an exciting and tough year for many of us. Every time you turn on the TV, it feels like there’s more negative news and sad stories. This year, perhaps more than any other, I’m grateful for Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Now is the time to step away from the negativity, to give thanks for what we have, and give back to those who are struggling. For three years, Wolf Retirement Navigation has been a proud lead sponsor of Tony’s Turkey Trot, a 5K charity event held on Thanksgiving morning every year in Atlantic Beach. This event is dedicated to raising money and awareness for people living with a traumatic brain injury. One accident can completely change a person’s life, and few people are prepared to deal with the emotional and financial burden that comes when a loved one suddenly needs constant medical care after a brain injury. This is a matter that is near and dear to my family’s heart. My wife’s sister Candace suffered from a traumatic brain injury for the last 13 years of her life after she was thrown from a horse and suffered a stoke. Prior to her injury, Candace was a professional horse trainer who showed horses and trained kids to ride and show horses. I never knew Candace before the accident, but I’ve heard many stories about her life from my wife Danielle and their mother. Candace was the kind of person who was always full of laughter and fun; she didn’t take life too seriously. Danielle had a close relationship with her sister, and I know how hard it was for her to see Candace hurting after her accident. Her brain injury left her with no long-term or short-term memories. She needed 24/7 care and had to live in a nursing home until she passed away in 2014. Participating in Tony’s Turkey Trot is our family’s way of honoring Candace and supporting the 210,000-plus Floridians who suffer from traumatic brain injuries every year. I’ll be at the race with Danielle and our daughter Isabella, along with team members, bright and early Thanksgiving morning. Tony’s Turkey Trot is the only race that starts and ends in our home city of Atlantic Beach, and you couldn’t ask for a better view. Last year, more than 1,000 participants got together to walk, run, or “waddle” along the 5K’s scenic course. This year, in addition to prizes,

• 2 tablespoons olive oil • 3.3 ounces fresh hot Italian sausage • 1½ pounds Brussels sprouts • ½ cup water • Salt and pepper •

DIRECTIONS

1. Trim sprouts and cut in half. 2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and cook, stirring occasionally, 3–5 minutes. 3. Add sprouts to skillet. Add ½ cup water. Add salt and pepper. Cover and cook 10 minutes or until just tender. Check them periodically and add a bit more water, if necessary. 4. When sprouts are just about done, remove cover and raise heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring just once or twice, for a couple more minutes. The liquid should evaporate and the sprouts should start to brown. 5. Add more salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot or warm. Serves 4.
