Back-to-School Life Lessons Making the Most of the School Year

As we’re approaching August, many kids are getting excited about starting a new school year. During this time, kids are preparing to meet new teachers, start new classes, and handle schoolwork again. The start of the school year can be overwhelming, but be sure not to let that be a reason your kids miss out on fun opportunities. Here are some tips to help your kids get the most out of the new school year. If your kids have the first-day jitters, then encourage them to look at challenges as opportunities. When I was young, we lived on a farm in a rural area, so I couldn’t see all my friends during the summer. It was exciting to have the opportunity to reconnect with my old friends and make new friends at the beginning of the school year. I gained friendships that I still cherish. The start of school also meant exploring new subjects or learning more about old favorites, like geology and astronomy. You can also encourage your youngsters to try different extracurricular activities as they become available! Doing a variety of activities will allow them to socialize with different groups and try new things. Kids who live on farms or in rural places may only have access to organized sports like football or If your children already excel in a particular sport, musical instrument, or subject, then encourage them to explore other ones, too.

soccer outside of school. Conversely, kids living in the city may have access to games and clubs like the debate team or chess in a school environment.

If your children already excel in a particular sport, musical instrument, or subject, then encourage them to explore other ones, too. It’s common for kids to find one thing they love and latch onto it, but this may hamper their potential to excel in other activities. For instance, a high school athlete might be great at debate competitions. Personally, I loved working with my hands, so I enjoyed the woodworking class and mechanics shop. I did try band class, but I was never as talented as Jill! Looking back, I wish I tried out for the golf team since I have so much fun golfing now! I can’t go a week without my Thursday golf game. As your kids get older, it’s also a great idea to encourage them to explore technical classes, like mechanics, woodworking, and coding. A semester’s worth of learning a craft helps them immensely to get familiar with the fundamentals. In high school, I loved shop class since it taught me the “why” behind the basics my uncle was already teaching me at his repair shop. Woodworking was new for me. On the farm, I was learning how to use a saw and nail things together, but in class, I was crafting cabinets, doors, you name it! Now, I can properly fix most of our household’s doors and cabinets or make them myself! Encouraging your kids to explore everything that the school system offers gives them a greater perspective and showcases their potential. Additionally, they’ll have a bigger tool chest to draw from wherever life takes them.

A Meal for Every Member of the Family Meals on Wheels Goes the Extra Mile Meals on Wheels doesn’t often get the credit it deserves. The international nonprofit ensures those who are unable to buy or make their own meals get the food they need to survive. Of course, for many recipients, the efforts of the organization go far beyond “survival.” For those who receive food daily or weekly, those deliveries may be their only source of social interaction. And during times of social distancing, the program became more important than ever. Meals on Wheels doesn’t just serve meals to the elderly and people with disabilities — it also serves those people’s pets. In 2019, Meals on Wheels Atlanta realized there was a huge need in their community to feed the pets of senior citizens. It stands to reason that if an elderly individual is unable to shop or cook for themselves, their pets may be in a similar predicament. And when someone’s pet is their entire world, making sure the animal is fed and healthy means everything. In response to this need, Meals on Wheels Atlanta began stocking up on cat and dog food, creating their own pantry to serve the local pet community. When volunteers made their rounds delivering meals to seniors, they made sure to bring cat and dog food along too. One volunteer with Meals on Wheels Atlanta, Larry Auberbach, had a unique experience delivering meals to Jeffery Jones and his dog, Grizzly. The volunteer told 11Alive News in Atlanta that Jeffery and Grizzly “have their own special relationship.” Larry loved Grizzly long before Meals on Wheels Atlanta started the pet pantry because he saw how much Grizzly’s companionship meant to Jeffery. Now, Larry enjoys his service that much more since he gets to provide for Jeffery’s beloved pet, as well. On top of delivering food to seniors and their pets, Meals on Wheels Atlanta also delivers pet toys and pet beds, and they are happy to take in any pet-related food or items for donation. The organization says this endeavor was done out of love, not only for the people they serve but also for the whole family —wagging tails, fuzzy whiskers, and all.

However, there are some smaller issues and projects anyone can tackle! Addressing these issues saves our customers valuable time and money that otherwise could be spent on road tripping with their friends or family! Replacing Your Air Filter If you’re smelling gas as you start your engine, see dark smoke leaving your exhaust pipe, or see your engine light pop on, then it’s time to look at your air filter. Most air filter boxes have easily removable screws or clips. After removing those, shine a light through the filter. If the light doesn’t shine through 60% of the filter, it needs replacing. When placing a new filter into the filter box, remember that the filter’s screen always faces the engine. ReplaceWindshieldWipers Wiper blades are exposed to dust, dirt, and debris, all of which contribute to the wear and tear that causes them not to work properly. Driving with worn wiper blades can be dangerous, so you should replace them as soon as you notice your visibility being impaired from streaking or inability to clean the windshield.

To replace the wiper blades on your vehicle, start by identifying the size and type of wiper blade you will be replacing. You can refer to your

To unhook the blade, identify the unlatching mechanism. Some you can simply pinch to remove the blade, and others have a push button or pull latch. Wrap the defective wiper blade in a towel to prevent damage to your windshield while you remove it. Be sure to remove the plastic protector from the rubber side of the wiper blade and latch the new one to your vehicle just reversing what you did to take off the old ones.

Most people say that Christmas only comes once a year. However, at Quality Plus

Automotive Service, that’s not the case. If you’ve read any of our newsletters or chatted with any of our employees, then you know our dedication to our community.

Hood Lifts

If you’re having to use a stick or broom to keep your hood up while inspecting your engine, then it’s time to replace the gas or hood lifts. First, reach out to your local auto parts store or Quality Plus Automotive to find the right lifts for your car. Then when you begin replacing the old lifts, use that old stick, a broom, or a friend to hold the hood up. By using a metric socket set and a ratchet, most lifts simply unbolt. Make sure to unbolt the top of the lifts first before unscrewing the bottom section. While these are all easy DIY projects you can handle at home, sometimes they’re trickier than they appear. If you’re struggling with any of these projects, then reach out to our technicians anytime. They can guide you through the issue seamlessly or can tackle it quickly if you stop by one of the shops!

Right now, things are stressful for everyone as we’re all watching every dollar. Knowing how much our area needs positivity and a little help,

Fun Facts About the Month of July What Do Julius Caesar and Buffalo Wings Have in Common?

Most Americans associate July with Independence Day and everything the holiday entails, including traditional barbecue cuisine, fireworks, and summer vacations. However, in addition to the Fourth of July, this midsummer month has a rich history and offers fun opportunities for everyone to celebrate. ‘What’s in a Name?’ You’ve likely heard of Julius Caesar, the famous Roman dictator and general known for changing the Roman Empire’s political structure, innovating war tactics, and eventually dying after a legendary assassination. But did you know that July, Caesar’s birth month, wasn’t always called that? It was initially named Quintilis , which means “fifth” in Latin, because it was the fifth month of the ancient Roman calendar. Shortly after Caesar’s death, the month of Quintilis was renamed July in his honor. Of course, Caesar’s legacy didn’t end there. Before he died, he implemented the Julian calendar, which he based off of the Egyptian solar calendar, and it remained in place for over 1,500 years until the Gregorian calendar was introduced in the 16th century. Red,White, andWho? Similar to the Declaration of Independence for the U.S., Canada’s Constitution Act of 1867, signed on July 1 of that year, marks the birth of Canada. The following year, Charles Monck, the 4th Viscount

Monck and Canada’s first governor-general, signed a proclamation requesting that everyone in Canada celebrate their country’s independence on July 1. However, it wasn’t

until 100 years later that the date officially became Canada Day. Most celebrations include fireworks and red and white attire, much like how Americans celebrate the Fourth of July. GotWings?

While chicken wings are a staple of Southern dining, they actually originated in upstate NewYork. In 1964, Teressa Bellissimo, co-owner of the Anchor Bar, started cooking leftover wings dipped in hot sauce for her son and his friends. After receiving enthusiastic feedback, Bellissimo put themon the menu. Over the next few years, the recipe’s popularity spread, and in 1977, former Buffalomayor Stan Makowski declared July 29 to be National ChickenWing Day. The reputation of the famous Buffalo wings continued to spread nationwide, and in the early ‘90s, wings became an international hit when McDonald’s, KFC, and Domino’s Pizza began selling them in the variety of flavors we know and love today.
