The project

Some key elements we were looking for with the project was shelving that would allow flexible use of space. One of the requirements was that we would need to be able to move furniture to allow space for Library programs. We were looking for a consistent style throughout the Library that highlighted the collection and provided neat top and end panels. Instead of traditional straight lines, we wanted curved shelving in some areas to create quiet reading areas within the library. For the Children’s area we wanted consistency, but also some brighter colours, to highlight areas for pre-school and primary aged children.

The Result

Notably, is the design of the Raeco ® shelving from the “Expressions” range that is a hybrid solution with steel shelves and timber finishes to the carcass. All the library shelving is mobile meaning that our library space can be used for many purposes, including meetings and story time sessions, and if we need, we can simply rearrange the shelving floor plan with ease. The style throughout the Library is consistent and really highlights the collection. The magazine shelving is also neat with our extensive magazine collection being stored behind clear perspex doors. The curved shelving has provided quiet reading areas where patrons can sit and read. The circular children’s shelving has been a hit with younger patrons who can browse the shelves that are at the appropriate height. The shelves are bright colours which helps make the children’s place a fun place to be. A very brief thank you to Raeco ® , the company that has recently and successfully delivered our brand new library project. - Natalie Brown, Library Services Senior Co-ordinator

NAREMBURN LIBRARY WILLOUGHBY CITY COUNCIL LIBRARY SERVICE, NSW

The project

Recent renovations to the Naremburn Library have increased the library and community learning multi-functional area, and offer two new community spaces available for hire. Being situated next to a child care centre and very close to local shops and services, the challenge was to meet the needs of children and their par- ents, as well as the needs of the local community in a relatively small library space and do so in a welcoming way. With the space being multi-functional, collections are secured from access when the space is being hired for other uses. However, the look of the collection behind grilles invites future visits. Naremburn Library provides the local community with services that include a lending collection, internet access, word processing, freeWiFi and photocopy facilities. The library also hosts regular programs such as School Holiday activities for school-aged children.

The solution

A purpose built magazine display with ottoman, was created to attractively display a limited selection of magazines, and provide seating. Extensive use of slatwall has made the best use of limited space, while providing a neat solution for the DVD and CD collections, in par ticular. A tailored shelving solution has allowed for a maximum collection size in the renovated library. Use of red-coloured bays in the children’s area, has provided impact and style.

The Result

The revamped Library boasts an exciting new look and new selection of children’s books, DVDs, fiction, paperbacks, and book club kits for the local community. There has been a lot of positive feedback from the users of Naremburn Library. - Michele Burton, Manager, Library & Community Learning Services

PACE HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY 12

PACE HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARY

QLD

The project

The PACE Health Sciences Library is one of the 15 branch libraries of the University of Queensland. The PACE Health Sciences Library opened in semester one, 2010.The Library works in par tnership with the academic community to provide convenient access to quality information, and to manage and provide access to UQ scholarship. The library should be flexible, comfor table and conducive to collaborative and active learning.

The solution

It was decided to generate as many types of group interaction areas as possible within the one tenancy. The library stake holder group observed that students tend to occupy semi enclosed booth like areas of existing libraries before the more open group desks get occupied. In response to that observation, it was decided that the library design should incorpo- rate many small booth like areas which when occupied provided a sense of containment and enclosure. The library was interested in developing group work areas within the book collection area and this was achieved by taking out single or double bays of shelving from the book collection and inser ting white hoop reveals at bench height. These interventions are able to be occupied by users on stools for group interaction, or provide a convenient browsing position, and generate sight lines through the collection to the reading area beyond.

EAST GIPPSLAND REGIONAL LIBRARY CORPORATION, VIC

The project

The library was moving from a very small site to a much larger one .The site was an old supermarket and it was essential we had furniture and shelving which turned the building into a vibrant, exciting and flexible library space.

The Result

Raeco ® listened to our requests and worked with us to put together a selection of shelving and furniture which matched our expectations for our new space, Raeco ® were able to meet our demands for bold, innovative colour schemes for our Furniture. This has given visitors to the library a vibrant selection of different seating areas to relax in. The shelving is almost entirely on wheels which gives us flexibility when holding events in the library and enables us to change the shelving layout if required. Innovative cabinetry meant we could make a vir tue out of several suppor ting poles located in the building, using them as easy Locatable spaces for library catalogue PC’s. The magazine area epitomizes the varied storage solutions Raeco ® could provide for us, with face out shelving for all titles but still plenty of storage for back Issues. The community has shown great suppor t for our new space since we opened; usage has increased substantially and feedback on our furniture and shelving has been overwhelmingly positive.

BRIDGETOWN REGIONAL LIBRARY 21

BRIDGETOWN REGIONAL LIBRARY THE SHIRE OF BRIDGETOWN GREENBUSHES, WA

The project

Situated in the Somme Creek recreational Precinct,The Shire of Bridgetown Greenbushes, sought to build a library that would provide a regional library service to the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Boyup Brook community. Designed by Willcox Associates the brief was to achieve a state-of-the-ar t eco-friendly building incorporating the use of timber, stone and rammed ear th to reflect the heritage of the area and to blend sympathetically into the parkland landscape.

The solution

The use of exposed concrete and steel suggests a building of substance and endurance while the floor to ceiling windows give the impression of the parklands extending into the library and a sense of peace and tranquility. The carpet tiles, custom coated shelving and charcoal bay ends become secondary to the book covers and colourful furniture which highlight the reading areas creating a lounge room atmosphere.

The result

A beautiful library which is a credit to the Shire. The continual delight in the appearance and ambience of the facility expressed by members of the community and visitors to the library illustrates that the architect has achieved the brief. The use of mobile shelving has created the capacity for a fluid community space that can be used for many civic occasions. - Elizabeth Denniss, Acting CEO, Bridgetown Regional Library

LIBRARY AT THE DOCK 31

LIBRARY AT THE DOCK 33

LIBRARY AT THE DOCK CITY OF MELBOURNE, LIBRARY SERVICE, VIC

The project

The vision for the Library at The Dock was to provide a community space that delivered both a traditional library service as well as a cutting edge technology offer alongside facilities that would empower the community to read, learn, connect and create. The Library at The Dock project presented a range of complex and sometimes competing interests and drivers which all needed to be considered as par t of a bespoke and responsive shelving solution which had the reader at its hear t. The tripar tite nature of the project involving LendLease, Places Victoria and City of Melbourne meant that each par ty had their own expectations in terms of vision, sustainability, visibility and innovation which all became key considerations when developing the shelving offer. The Library at The Dock houses a collection of 60,000 physical items as well as providing access to a vast range of digital content such as eBooks and heritage and research resources.

The challenges and solutions

Library at The Dock is a three level library – a significant challenge was how to place the collections in a way that connected zones and spaces in a meaningful way. The thematic approach at planning stage helped to define the floors as integrated functional areas around themes of connect (Ground Floor) Learn (Level One) and Create (Level 2). Library at The Dock is a timber and glass construction with high level of transparency with stunning 360 degree views over water and parkland. A key challenge was how to optimize visibility and still provide the required level of shelving to house the substantial collection expected by the community. A non- standard shelving height was used for fiction and also a flexible bespoke solution was used for the non-fiction collection. A significant propor tion of the shelving was Architect designed and required extensive design and production work. The negotiations over function and form were challenging but ultimately rewarding as solutions were found which addressed both.

The result

The low shelving on the Ground Floor of the library does look beautiful and enhances the wonderful views all round. The combination of wood and black shelving looks very elegant and impar ts a warmth to the library which could have been lacking if all pale wood had been used. The location of collections has been thoughtfully managed. Adult and junior non-fiction subject zones which encourage browsing and discovery make reading choices so much easier. A number of bespoke children’s shelving units were developed to encourage discovery and shared reading to great success. The shelving also very clearly defines the space and what it contains. It shifts the adult gaze into a family friendly zone. Great use of display shelving throughout all the collections provides enticement for the readers and brings the books to the reader in a compelling way. This success is a measure both of the quality of the collection as well as the superior access provided by the shelving and the reader-centred approach to presentation of collections. While the shelving solution is predominantly bespoke, a key feature is its flexibility and interoperability – enabling the library to future proof changes in use and navigation of collections and spaces over the coming decades.

HONG KONG

The school

The school

Kowloon Junior School is a large 5 form entry Primary with 900 students from Year 1 toYear 6. Kowloon Junior School is par t of ESF but was originally founded in 1902 as the Kowloon British School catering exclusively for expatriate children. The school was renamed Kowloon Junior School when it moved to a new building in Per th Street in 1950. Today KJS serves a broad and culturally diverse community with students from more than 25 countries including a high propor tion of Hong Kong permanent residents.. One of the main strengths of the school is undoubtedly its long-standing and highly suppor tive community, with generations of the same families passing through its doors. This new campus has been designed to cater for the needs of 21st century learners and incorporates everything students, teachers and parents could wish for from a primary school – and more.

West Island School is established in the best traditions of the English Schools Foundation (ESF) to provide excellence in the education of students from eleven to eighteen years of age who want an English medium education. The school is housed in an exciting and innovative building from where we can see the University, Hong Kong’s biggest teaching hospital, the Cyber Por t and the busy shipping lanes that demonstrate the key position of Hong Kong on the Pacific Rim’s superhighway. The school has an outstanding record of academic attainment and welcomes students of all races to join us on what we believe is a learning superhighway connected to prestigious destinations all over the world.

KOWLOON JUNIOR SCHOOL LIBRARY

ST PETERS JUNIOR SCHOOL LIBRARY

SA

The project

Saint Peter’s College is a prestigious Boys College located on the Eastern side of Adelaide’s CBC. The current Junior School Library at Saint Peter’s College was finished mid 2010. It was built to amalgamate two existing libraries within the Junior School. Prior to this there was a Junior Primary Library and a Primary library. On completion of the library in 2010 all books were stored on traditional Raeco® shelving or on spinners, with a few display shelves. We noted that the picture book collection was rarely accessed, that the spinners were difficult for both staff and students to locate items on and that the non-fiction collection was rarely accessed by our younger students.

The solution

To remedy this, we decided to use face out shelving so that students could easily see the covers of the books. We made the following face out sections within our collection to allow easier access to the books. Non-fiction collection for the Junior Primary Students, Series collection, whereby series books for R-4 students are filed in alphabetical order by the name of the series, Picture Book collection, whereby high quality picture books are stored face out for students to access. We also bought several of the Display cubes in order to display and highlight different books or collections to our students and parents. These work brilliantly as they can be configured in many different ways to create interest. With the face out shelving we are finding that the students are more successful in locating books which suit their reading interests and abilities. They are much more motivated to look through the collection when making their selections and enjoy looking at all the covers of the books. The face out shelving cer tainly makes book selection a much more engaging process. Our borrowing statics show that borrowing from these collections has dramatically increased. - Alison Winter, School Librarian

MUSEUM OF OLD & NEW ART (MONA) LIBRARY

TAS

The project

Located in a sympathetic extension that radiates out from a heritage-listed roundhouse designed by Sir Roy Grounds, the brief was to create a library that safely housed the MONA reference collection. Growing over time from 1400 titles personally acquired by DavidWalsh (MONA owner) to over 5500 titles, the collection had come to function as a significant resource for MONA staff. The aim was for the library to continue as a reference centre for staff as well as being easily accessible and available to researchers, museum visitors and the general public.

The solution

The shelving was custom coated to match the architect’s overall theme, as were the custom built bay ends and caps. Specially fitted skir ting boards along the base of the shelves completed the look to give an overall finish that is clean and stylish. The care taken during installation ensured the shelving bays all sit comfor tably in a space that radiates out from the core of the original building.

The result

A beautiful library that is also functional for staff and users. Many users and visitors comment on the restful atmosphere that welcomes both researchers and museum visitors looking for a space to relax during their visit to MONA. - Mary Lijnzaad, Manager, Library & Numismatics Collection

EMERALD HILL LIBRARY & HERITAGE CENTRE

CITY OF PORT PHILLIP, VIC

The project

The Emerald Hill Branch Library is located in the heritage listed old Post Office building in Bank Street, South Melbourne. The original Post Office building and adjacent Annex space were both in need of refurbishment to meet contemporary library service standards as well as access compliance requirements. The brief was to provide a new heritage service point and a purpose-built library, by optimising the available space, improving services, and providing better oppor tunities for access to technology and collection resources.

The solution

To create a dedicated heritage area that was able to house the Heritage collection and facilitate the delivery of state-of-the-ar t heritage services to both residents and visitors to the city of the Por t Phillip. The aim was to eliminate previous service constraints whilst observing strict heritage guidelines, to create a robust and flexible space to meet a wide variety of community expectations as well as expand the physical spaces available for community activities and the housing of the library’ collection. We also wanted to resolve any physical access issues so that the library could be easily accessed by the whole community. This was achieved by setting up new Raeco ® shelving systems that had the capacity to house an increased collection whilst being able to be easily moved, to create spaces as required. This also improved our capacity to promote the collection via display options. We were also able to create a dedicated children’s area that could be used for a wide variety of programs and activities.

The result

The refurbished library has now been in operation since October 2013. It has been met with high praise from the community and attracts a growing membership. There has been a marked increase in the loan of items, the number and type of programs delivered, and in the number of people par ticipating in these programs. The result

All free standing shelving units are completely mobile and no more than three bays in length. This ensures that the library space is flexible and can be changed around as required to accommodate special events and functions. The Local Studies shelving is housed behind lockable glass doors. This enables the collection to be clearly visible to the public at all times, while also ensuring the security of rare and valuable items. During the redevelopment of the Warrandyte Community Centre, space for a small library was created by reconfiguring the existing footprint of the Community Centre.

The solution

The colour palette selected by the architect references a painting of theYarra River by Clara Southern, a local ar tist and member of the renowned Heidelberg School. Fitting the collection into the space presented some challenges; we appreciated Raeco’s assistance in finding a solution. Mobile shelving units enable the children’s area to be easily rearranged for programs and events and slatwall panels on pillars provide a space efficient solution for displays. As the Whitehorse Manningham Library branches are progressively upgraded, Raeco ® shelving in neutral White Birch is being adopted to enable a flexible whole of service approach to the shelving solution.
