SUMMER & FALL During Summer and Fall in Red River, you won’t find many people spending days inside. The allure of cool mountain temperatures, pine-scented air, blue skies and sunshine, colorful fall foliage – not to mention abundant activities – is too tempting to resist. Visitors to Red River participate in a healthy lifestyle that has remained virtually unchanged for a century and strengthens people’s connection to the beauty of our natural surroundings. Visit Red River during summer and fall and you’ll always find something meaningful to do – whether it’s seeing a concert, going on a hike, renting an OHV, or just sitting on a Main Street bench taking it all in.
ACTIVITIES The Town of Red River is landlocked within a 1.5-million-acre national forest that puts the splendor of Mother Nature at every doorstep. The only real growth and development you’ll see are trees and wildlife. The great outdoors is, without question, Red River’s main attraction and why people love visiting our old silver mining town. Of course, there is one notable difference about present-day Red River: Today we offer countless modern-day activities and amenities that let visitors experience the surrounding mountains and forests in ways our ancestors wouldn’t believe.
OHV (OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLES) Okay, driving an OHV never gets dull, especially when the rocky trails lead you to some of the most scenic and secluded vistas and lakes in northern New Mexico. For those with grit in their hearts and who don’t mind a little grit in their teeth, OHVs offer perfect off-the-beaten-path adventures the whole family can enjoy.
Visit redriver.org for rentals and off-road trails.
FISHING Red River was named after the river that flows right through town. Yes, we have fishing and long stretches of it. Red River’s many riffles and pools are within casting distance of Main Street and catches of the day can be caught right from the shore. The river is easy to access and stocked generously throughout the year. There are many other rivers and lakes nearby, too, for satisfying day trips. Our guide services are happy to take you out to some of our favorite spots and hook you into a wonderful experience. For Kids Open shorelines, easy casting, walkable from virtually anywhere in town, fishing supplies stores; Red River is great for young fishers and for seasoned anglers who are still kids at heart. For Anglers You didn’t bring all your angling gear to sit and swap stories with kids in the park. For experienced fly fishers, hire a local guide to take you to more remote fishing waters. They can put you onto wilder trout and corroborate (wink wink) your remarkable fish stories.
HIKING A Red River hike is breathtaking for two reasons: our town’s high elevation and the spectacular scenery. Bring plenty of water, take plenty of pictures and experience one peaceful trail after another through the protected wilderness around town. Spotting wildlife – mule deer, elk, black bear, bighorn sheep – is almost a guarantee. We have an extensive trail system for all levels of hikers, including short hikes, longer day hikes and hikes for peak baggers.
Visit redriver.org for a detailed and printable list of trails.
HORSEBACK RIDING Horseback guided tours will elevate your appreciation for Red River’s spectacular scenery and offer majestic ways to travel through our mountain passes and prairies. Each horse gives you a 360 ° view of your surroundings. You’ll have a front-saddle view of all the smiles in your posse. Drift away as you get carried up through meandering switchbacks and pass by unobstructed mountain vistas. Come stir up some dust (or some snow). Give your backside an old-fashioned ride. RED RIVER SKI AND SUMMER AREA During summer and fall, our ski area is knee deep in fresh park activities. Spend a summer day here and never do the same thing twice. We have zip lines, tubing, and an aerial park for adrenaline junkies. We have hiking, mountain biking, and disc golf for outdoor lovers. And if you simply want a more laid-back experience, ride the chairlift to the top, order a beverage and watch a mountaintop concert. There isn’t a bad way to spend the day up here. Visit redriver.org for summer activities.
WHAT TO WEAR (BESIDES A SMILE ON YOUR FACE)
Remember, Red River is a high-altitude mountain town and behaves as such. Sunny days can turn into a stampede of rain clouds. Warm temperatures can drop down to shivers. Be prepared. Wear layers, sunscreen, protective hats and sunglasses, and comfortable walking shoes. Let people know what you’re doing and where you’re going. And remember to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! (We mean water, folks.) This goes for all our town activities.
MUSIC & EVENTS Admittedly, Red River is more extroverted than the average mountain town. Nothing fills our hearts like the sight of Main Street overflowing with music, festivities and crowds having a grand old time. Red River hosts a long list of popular summer and fall concerts and events that have become recurring staples for those in the know. And now you’re in the know. When you seek good tunes, good food, good times, and a good weekend getaway, Red River is the quaint mountain town that attracts people from all around.

NIGHTLY MUSIC
WINTER Sparkly white snow blanketing the storefronts, holiday lights, fire pits, beanies on heads and hot chocolate in hands; the slow meandering of life in a small town – winter in Red River is what all winters should be. Our town turns up the charm in winter, and the welcome addition of snow opens up a whole new world of reasons to visit such as skiing and snowboarding, snowmobiling, snowcat tours, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, tubing, and sledding. Of course, it’s okay to relax, too, maybe stroll Main Street, shop, grab a meal, catch up with the group at Après ski, and inhale the deeply revitalizing qualities of our clean mountain air. Getting away is the real reason to visit.
RED RIVER SKI & SUMMER AREA - WINTER In case you didn’t know, Red River has quite the ski town reputation. That’s not us just saying it. Recently, Red River was voted Best Ski Town by USA Today . While we love Mother Nature, our mountain doesn’t need her. Our snowmaking machines can cover 85% of our runs, ensuring the reliable delivery of joyous winter conditions for skiers and snowboarders. We have steep runs, bumps, groomed runs, a terrain park, and an almost surreal Enchanted Forest in an Aspen grove. Enjoy tubing, sledding and Après ski at the end of the day. Our unpretentious town is the backdrop. Rentals and lessons available.
SNOWMOBILING AND SNOWCAT TOURS Throw on your helmet and goggles, press the throttle and let the world become a blur. Snowmobile and snowcat tours tours take you to out-of-the-way places where autos can’t even go. These trips are adrenaline-inducing to say the least and offer 360 ° views of the area. You will be scheduling your next snowmobiling trip before you return.
TORCHLIGHT PARADE AND FIREWORKS After the sun drops, our slopes are lit by the Torchlight Parade and Fireworks every Saturday night. This colorful celebration is a Red River tradition and family favorite.
DAY TRIPS - THE ENCHANTED CIRCLE Town of Red River is part of the Enchanted Circle, an 84-mile scenic byway that circles Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico. This beautiful drive not only puts you in touch with New Mexico’s natural geological formations but takes you through historic towns and points of interest. DAY TRIPS - NEARBY TOWNS Northern New Mexico has many unique towns in the vicinity of Red River. If you are looking for something to do outside of our town, we recommend a day trip to one of our neighbors. The views from the highway alone are worth the adventure. Check out popular day trips at redriver.org.
THREE PERFECT DAYS We could have stopped at one perfect day but that would have left out so many fun things to do. So, we went for three days with a balanced trip that raises your heart rate and then lowers it again. For such a small Town, Red River has all you need for a fulfilling vacation. Here is a sample itinerary of a multi-day trip we created and would love to go on.
EXPLORATION: The majority of Red River’s many retail stores, hotels and restaurants are located on Main Street, a mile-long stretch of road that puts its ends within easy reach of each other. Inhale air that is clean and crisp, and filtered through a million-acre pine forest. The delicious breeze nudges you from one friendly hello to the next, past local boutiques and restaurants and plenty of places to pick up new memories. Along Main Street you will find coffee shops, ice cream and candy shops, restaurants, and breweries. Get your bearings and get ready for an exciting day two. IMMERSION: Red River’s protected wilderness is unquestionably the main attraction of the town. Red River offers many exhilarating ways to see it. Go on a horseback ride over a mountain pass. Rent an OHV (off- highway vehicle) or snowmobile with the family. Power along a narrow dirt road to a secluded lake. Picnic lakeside, just you and the hungry trout. Go snowshoeing. Have your camera ready. You will see wildlife such as mule deer, elk, brown bear, and bighorn sheep – the town’s other full-time residents. ACTIVITY: Summer hikes are popular along the many trails crisscrossing Red River Ski & Summer Area. If you make it to the top, you’ll be rewarded with lunch and a cold beverage on the deck of our mountain lodge, and perhaps some live music to go along with them. Other fun excursions include an outdoor obstacle course, tubing, and go cart racing. During winter, we recommend skiing and snowboarding. All our family- friendly activities can be accessed from Main Street and are designed to create new stories your family will talk about for years.

Abundant fur-bearing game attracted trappers to the area
1800s
Prospectors followed the trappers, spurred on by the Elizabethtown gold rush and construction of the Big Ditch.
1860s
The first area land was homesteaded by Ed Westoby and the three Mallette brothers, Orin, George, and Sylvester.
LATE 1800s
Red River’s population soared in the 1890s with “get-rich-quick” fever. The good and bad moved in by the hundreds, including the dreaded Black Jack Ketchum who took time out from robbing to charm the ladies at area dances. The first log schoolhouse was built. Mrs. Ida Phipps was the teacher. The original structure burned in 1915 and was replaced by the Red School House, which still stands and now houses the museum. Red River’s population reached 3,000 and had 15 saloons, four hotels, two newspapers, a barbershop, a hospital, a sawmill, and an active red- light district. Turn of the century mining failures caused Red River to become a ghost town that flickered back to life when mining was reactivated. Gold, silver, and copper mines operated in the Red River area until 1925. Most were located in Bitter Creek, Goose Creek, Pioneer, Mallette, and upper Red River Canyons. Molybdenum was discovered in the lower Red River canyon. The mineral’s importance as a hardening and strengthening agent in the manufacturing of steel was proven after World War I.
1890s
1896
HISTORY You can see the remains of gold, silver and copper mines, and compounds throughout Red River. Mining runs in our blood and still has a big claim in our town’s history. People rush here today for many other reasons obviously, but the rush to get rich is how we began.
1900
1912
1916
1921-22
The first “moly” mill was built. In 2011, the mine was declared a Superfund site and current owner Chevron Mining Inc. closed it in 2014.
1920s – 1930
Red River was designated “mountain play-ground” by tourists escaping the dust bowl.
1928
Jack Munden built tourist cabins on the site of the present-day Riverside Lodge. The Pioneer Camp site once held cabins built by Will Johnson.
1930
A grocery store and gas pump were built. At the same time, Mr. Clapper’s rental units at the Grandview location were built. Horace Johnson put in a grocery store across from the Miners’ Hospital. Red River’s excellent climate, beautiful scenery, and varied activities – skiing, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, square dancing, sightseeing, etc. – assure the growth and continuation of Red River’s exciting history.
1930 – PRESENT
SHOPPING & DINING Red River has numerous retail and dining options, enough to fill empty shopping bags and empty stomachs. Most of the Town’s shopping and dining establishments are conveniently located on Main Street, easily accessible by auto or by foot.

By now you’ve realized our passion for the outdoors. We pride ourselves in keeping our town and surrounding areas clean and undisturbed. Please help us by throwing away your trash and cleaning up after yourself. Basically, leave things like you found them, or even better. We certainly appreciate it. Red River’s wildlife does, too. LEAVE NO TRACE
